Make it Better with Bertolli!

October 29, 2015 By Lena

Note: The following giveaway is open to Canadians only.

There are a few brands in my pantry that I consider “iconic”. At the top of that list: Bertolli Olive Oil.

Renowned as the world’s leading brand of olive oil, the Bertolli tradition began in 1865 in Italy in the small town of Lucca. There, Francesco and Caterina Bertolli opened a trading shop underneath the family home, where they sold olive oil.

Thank you, Francesco and Caterina, for bringing deliciousness into the homes all around the world for more than 150 years. From full-bodied to mild and sweet, the Bertolli range has an olive oil for all my cooking needs. oo_landing_bottles_newSalads, pasta dishes and grilled vegetables come to life with Bertolli Originale or Gentile Extra Virgin Olive Oil. For an all-purpose cooking oil for stews and sautés,  I always reach for Bertolli Classico Olive Oil for its mild olive taste. And when I want a light tasting all-purpose oil with a very high smoke point (including deep frying and baking), I can trust Bertolli Delicato Extra Light Tasting Olive Oil.

And now, Bertolli introduces 100% Olive Oil Sprays! Available in Extra Virgin and Extra Light Tasting Olive Oil, these new products offer the versatility of 100% olive oil for both raw and cooked dishes, with the convenience of portion control and just 4 calories per spray. Plus, they are all natural and contain no gas propellants. …

Mint, Honeydew and Avocado Smoothie

October 26, 2015 By Lena

Need an afternoon pick-me-up? Instead of reaching for another coffee, try this Mint, Honeydew and Avocado Smoothie! Take half a honeydew melon and three ripe avocados. Seed, cut in chunks and toss into a blender, adding mint syrup (recipe follows) until desired consistency is achieved. Garnish with mint leaves. Enjoy!
12107523_1117459691621005_1353696617_nThe recipe was created by Chef Andres Marquez for our #AvoSocial. The smoothie is satisfying, refreshing, and best of all – good for you! A moderate fat diet that includes one fresh avocado daily may help your body absorb nutrients from other foods and lower cholesterol. More than 75 percent of the fat in avocados is considered “good” fat, with 3g coming from monounsaturated fat and 0.5g from polyunsaturated fat (per 1-ounce serving).

Okay, back to the recipe. To make that mint syrup, you’re going to need to boil one (1) litre of water. Grab four (4) mint sprigs and separate the leaves from the stems. (The leaves are used for garnish, above.) Add the mint stems and 2 cups of sugar to the boiling water. Turn the heat off and let all the ingredients steep for about 5 minutes. Remove the stems and cool completely. …

That’s a Wrap! Peanut Butter, Honey and Banana Breakfast Wraps

October 21, 2015 By Lena

Looking for a quick and delicious breakfast your whole family will love? Spread whole wheat tortillas with peanut butter (or wowbutter) and honey. Roll around a peeled ripe banana, and wrap in foil. Bake in a 350°F oven for 10 minutes. Serve warm!
DSC_1299aYou can switch it up by substituting peanut butter and honey with Nutella or REESE Spreads, or add a touch of texture and sweetness with dried cranberries or raisins. And, if you’re looking for something really special, dip the wraps into extra honey. So good!

I begin to crave these wraps whenever the colder weather settles in. They’re a perfectly nourishing and satisfying way to start to your day… stay warm friends!

Back to Basics. Because Our Life is Deep ’n Delicious.

October 14, 2015 By Lena

I resent the term “basic”.

Used in its current context, it’s used to describe something, or someone, as being uncool or passé. (It may even have ties to the Kardashians, which is a truly scary thing.) There’s no doubt about it; being “basic” is not the bandwagon you want to be riding on.

But you know what? I like basic. I like simple things – watching television with my husband; playing board games with my kids, window shopping with my mom. In fact, I truly believe that some of the most rewarding things in life are the tried-and-true foods and activities that bring families closer together. And often, it’s as easy as a warm, welcoming kitchen and a delicious slice of cake.
DSC_1410aMcCain Deep ’n Delicious Cakes have been a basic – but legendary – part of our family nights for as long as I can remember. Fluffy, flavourful and always guaranteed to put a smile on my boys’ faces, the cakes are my go-to treat for family nights, celebrations, or just because.

(I tend to find “just because” occasions multiple times per week. Who can blame me? The Marble Cake is a game changer. And the kids never say no to chocolate and vanilla.) …

Make Thanksgiving EASY with Butterball!

October 6, 2015 By Lena

Confessions of a suburban housewife: I’ve never cooked a turkey.

Don’t be so surprised. Frankly, I have an aversion to cooking anything that needs to be thawed, prepped, cooked, carved and packed for leftovers. And the dishes… oh, the dishes! Before marrying into my husband’s family, I was in turkey-less bliss.

Then, I met my future mother-in-law. And I tasted her Thanksgiving turkey… and I became a forever fan. Yep, I joined the gobble gang. More turkey please!

Juicy, moist and flavourful – with herbed stuffing and thick, rich gravy – just the thought of a Butterball turkey always makes me drool with anticipation. It’s been a holiday tradition for me for 10 years now, and for millions of Canadians, much, much longer than that.
DSC_1374So, what if I told you that the above turkey, stuffing and all, was cooked from frozen?

The Promise: pre-stuffed with delicious homestyle stuffing, this Butterball Stuffed Whole Turkey is tender and juicy every time. Simply remove the frozen turkey from the plastic bag, place it on a rack in a shallow roasting pan, brush the skin with vegetable oil and roast according to the time listed on the roasting chart. (Click here for full instructions.) …

Snack Pack in his Back Pack!

September 16, 2015 By Lena

Meet Ryder, the serial snacker.

He’s the type of kid who can eat, and eat, and eat… and he does. Frequently. In fact, years ago, had we been able to project our monthly food expenditures, we probably wouldn’t have had a second kid. Just kidding. But not really.

The good news? Without even trying, he’s developed a discernible palate, and actually prefers fruits, vegetables and dairy-based foods over other snacks and treats. It’s a mother’s dream! A kid who’d rather have broccoli over brownies. However, he’s seven, and he loves a lot of “once-in-a-while” foods as well, such as pop, candy and chocolate. So, my job is to find him a better-for-you snack that he’ll love. And trust me, he loves Snack Pack pudding.

“Just one, Mommy,” he says. Oh, and I’m supposed to resist him?
DSC_1314Whether he reaches for Chocolate, Butterscotch or another tasty flavour (Vanilla is his favourite!), I can feel good knowing his Snack Pack is made with skim milk, contains no preservatives and no trans fat. Plus, with no refrigeration required, it’s the perfect portable snack for his back pack, or as an after-school treat. Swing by my house; you’ll find Ryder on the porch every afternoon enjoying a Snack Pack pudding. It’s his preferred way to unwind after a hectic day of math and spelling! …

Share a Coke… with the Toronto Maple Leafs!

September 14, 2015 By Lena

NOTE: The following giveaway is open to Canadians only.

As a child, I was an avid collector. Stickers, bracelets, trading cards, you name it! I coveted anything marked “Collector’s Edition” or “Bonus!”, and kept tabs on all the items I had yet to possess. Because the thrill for any collector lies in the hunt; the search for that elusive missing piece of the collection.

Lately, my I’ve been coveting a Coke with my name on. And I’m closer than ever to making it a reality.

usqxcbtzss7By popular demand, Coca-Cola has brought back one of its most successful Canadian programs of all time, Share a Coke, with more names, and more reasons to share!

Once again, Coca-Cola has swapped its iconic logo on 500 mL bottles of Coca-Cola, Diet Coke and Coke Zero for more than 1,000 of the most popular names in the country. Wondering if your name made the cut? Visit shareacoke.ca for a list of individual names that are on 500mL bottles, and a list of titles that are on 355mL cans in 12, 15 or 24 packs. If you don’t see the name you’re looking for, you can always personalize and share a can at a Share Kiosk event this fall. (Toronto: Visit Riot Fest on September 19th and 20th from 11 AM to 8 PM.)

Drum roll… there IS a “Lena” Coke! You can bet I’ll be on the hunt this season, and to my friends and family, I expect you all to be looking for it as well!

Of course, when you do come across your name or the name of a friend,  share your special moments of happiness with Coca-Cola through social media at @cocacola_ca on Twitter and by using #shareacokecanada. …

We’re Ready for School Nights with Cardinal Ready!

September 7, 2015 By Lena

Back-to-school. Oh, it’s happening. And while I struggle to make lists, check them twice, and stay on top of the chaos, I’ve realized that I spend a disproportionate amount of time stressing about the kids while they’re in school, and not enough time planning ways to connect and bond with them while they’re at home. And the perfect time to create family moments? At the dinner table, of course.

This year, I’m looking for nutritious and delicious meal ideas that are ready when I am. And that’s why I’m once again stocking my refrigerator with Cardinal Ready products. This Dried Fruit is Anything But Dry.

August 16, 2015 By Lena

NOTE: The following giveaway is open to Canadians only.

I’ll admit it; I don’t think a food dehydrator has ever been on my culinary wishlist.

I mean, I’ve never sat around on a Saturday afternoon thinking, I wish I could dry some fruit. I mean, who does… right? Except now that I have spent a Saturday afternoon drying fruit, it’s a process I’d definitely like to repeat again… and again… thanks to the Hamilton Beach Food Dehydrator.
DSC_1246Back-to-school is around the corner. The opportunity to load up my boys’ lunchbox with healthy snacks – without preservatives or additives – is very attractive to me. And since my little guys love fruit, why not concentrate the flavours, make it completely portable, and have it available for them when they want it? Friends, I’ve seen the light: I totally need a food dehydrator. …

Less Bun. More Flavour! Easy Breezy Back-to-School Breakfast

August 10, 2015 By Lena

NOTE: The following giveaway is open to Canadians only.

Normally, when I tell people that my kids don’t like breakfast, their reaction is quite predictable.

Really? But breakfasts for kids are so yummy!
I’ve never heard of a kid not liking breakfast!
OMG, my kids are starving in the morning! Aren’t yours?

And so on and so forth.

Thing is, my boys just aren’t interested in eating at all when they wake up. If I sit them at the breakfast table, they’ll play with their food. If I let them camp out in front of the TV, they’ll ignore their breakfasts completely. I’ve tried bribing, begging and everything in between… and still, they don’t eat.

So, I decided if I can’t beat ’em, I’d join ’em. I started thinking about foods they do love to eat – and how they love to eat them. And I realized that my boys really are finger food people; they like to select, dip, repeat. I made it my mission to create a well-balanced, dippable meal that they’d enjoy.
DSC_1243First, it had to be loaded with protein. Breakfast meats like bacon and sausage are great… in small doses. I simply don’t want to create an environment where high-sodium foods are a dietary staple. So I turned to my old stand-by: Greek yogurt. Loaded with protein and calcium, it’s the perfect breakfast food! I selected an Oikos Banana Greek Yogurt as I figured it would be pleasing to young palettes. Then, to up the protein content even more, I added a tablespoon of smooth peanut butter. Could there be a better combination? I think not. …

Discover a Healthier Way to Delicious

August 6, 2015 By Lena

METROSEXUAL. [Noun] met·ro·sex·u·al \ˌme-trə-ˈsek-sh(ə-)wəl: a usually urban heterosexual male given to enhancing his personal appearance by fastidious grooming, beauty treatments, and fashionable clothes.

Thank goodness for my husband. As a bona fide metrosexual, he pays attention to things that most men don’t (or won’t, or can’t). He tells me when my hilites are due for re-touching and my wardrobe requires updating. He purchases moisturizer with the same finesse he uses to purchase power tools, and when my self-tanner is almost done, he knows to buy a replacement because he understands that the struggle for perfectly bronzed skin is real.

However, the most beneficial thing about being married to a self-aware man: he’s vain. Truly, it’s a GOOD thing! My husband helps me stay on top of my health and fitness; he’s often the “diet police” in the household, yanking carbs from a grip like an ogre snatches candy from a baby. I’ve accused him of raining on my junk food parade more than once, but in the end, I can’t fault him for being a better person, at least health-wise.

So, a couple of months ago, just in time for Father’s Day, I presented him with a small appliance that was near the top of his wishlist: the Philips Airfryer. Featuring Rapid Air Technology, the Philips Airfryer circulates hot air with speed and precision for perfect results with less oil.

Spoiler Alert: These chicken drumsticks were “fried” in the Philips Airfryer. DELICIOUS.
DSC_1053Let’s pause for a second. YES, even though it’s called the Airfryer, come on, you really didn’t expect to fry food with just air, did you? Remember the saying, man cannot live on air-fried food alone. (Or something like that.) The truth is, you do need a bit of oil to get the unit going, but, perspective please! The amount you use is only a tablespoon or two, and even that amount is drained from food while frying. What you’re left with is crispy, flavourful food that is healthier for you, too. …

Chiles Rellenos with Ranchera Sauce

July 31, 2015 By Lena

Earlier this year, I was offered a wonderful, unique opportunity to spend a week in luxury at The Islands of Loreto, Mexico. Located on the eastern side of the Baja Peninsula, the region boasts 155 miles of pristine coastline, 465 square miles of sea and the “Sierra de La Giganta” mountain range. Translation: Paradise on Earth.

Alas, an entire week away from my school-aged children is rarely in the cards, and this media trip was no exception. However, I couldn’t let this opportunity go to waste, so I enlisted my friend Elaine Atkins to take the trip and report back. Today, she shares one of her favourite dishes at Villa Del Palmar Beach Resort and Spa. Named as Baja, California’s first “Million Star Resort” after the approximate amount of stars you can see on a clear night, this dream location is a mere 40 minutes to the town of Loreto.
20150226_100536 (2)Introducing Chiles Rellenos – a dish that is alone worth taking the trip to Loreto, Mexico. The chile relleno is a dish of Mexican cuisine that originated in the city of Puebla. It consists of a stuffed, roasted, fresh poblano pepper (a mild chili pepper named after the city of Puebla), sometimes substituted with non-traditional Hatch chile, Anaheim, pasilla or even jalapeño chili pepper. In its earliest incarnations, it was described as a “green chile pepper stuffed with minced meat and coated with eggs”. In current cuisine, it is typically stuffed with melted cheese (such as queso Chihuahua or queso Oaxaca), seasoned with canella and covered in an egg batter or corn masa flour and fried. Although it is often served in a tomato sauce, the sauces can vary. (Source)…

Kick your snacking up a notch! Inspired by the Mexican heat, these popsicles – or palatas – bring together the classic combination of peanut butter and chocolate, with a spicy kick to your palate. This summer treat, found on the Peanut Bureau of Canada‘s website, was a huge hit at our recent Twitter Party, and I know that many of y’all were hoping that I would post the recipe. Well, ask and you shall receive! Permission to drool… now.
Chili Chocolate Peanut Butter PopsiclesFor the little ones, the amount of cayenne pepper can be reduced or omitted. Food News: Smarties Takes a Stand on Portion Control!

July 15, 2015 By Lena

It’s my sons’ favourite treat; a staple reward for a job well done. It’s a little something to spoil them from grandma, or a candy surprise at the movies or just because. It’s SMARTIES, of course. And until recently, I simply assumed a package was an appropriate portion.

Spoiler alert: it’s not.

How many of y’all grab a chocolate bar or a pack of SMARTIES from the variety store and simply tuck into it until it’s gone? Yeah, I’m guilty too. And I’m guilty of serving my children treats in the same fashion, erroneously believing that the portions were already calculated for me. The thing is, in some cases it’s fine to polish off the entire chocolate bar or bag of candy. But other times, a portion is actually a fraction of the product… even if you’ve probably been eating the whole darn thing all along.

In keeping with its global commitments to nutrition, health and wellness and its leadership in providing treats in a more permissible way, Nestlé Canada has given its SMARTIES packaging a refresh. The new innovative packaging takes portion control a step further by making it more intuitive, by providing portion guidance indicators.
DSC_1101So, you can now choose how much of the colourful treat you want to consume, while being mindful of portion size.

“We are motivated everyday by our nutrition, health and wellness commitments, and within those commitments is our goal to educate consumers and empower them with helpful information and guidance,” said Terri Tinella, President, Confectionery, Nestlé Canada. “These changes are all about giving Canadians the treats they love while empowering them to make informed choices.”

The changes, which encourage consumers to enjoy some treats now and save the rest for later if they choose, include:

1) SMARTIES regular box is now physically divided into three compartments, all containing a smaller single portion; 2) SMARTIES cello bag is now a recyclable canister with a custom lid, allowing consumers to measure out a portion; 3) All seasonal large, hollow SMARTIES figures and packages have been reduced to a single portion. …
