I resent the term “basic”.
Used in its current context, it’s used to describe something, or someone, as being uncool or passé. (It may even have ties to the Kardashians, which is a truly scary thing.) There’s no doubt about it; being “basic” is not the bandwagon you want to be riding on.
But you know what? I like basic. I like simple things – watching television with my husband; playing board games with my kids, window shopping with my mom. In fact, I truly believe that some of the most rewarding things in life are the tried-and-true foods and activities that bring families closer together. And often, it’s as easy as a warm, welcoming kitchen and a delicious slice of cake.
McCain Deep ’n Delicious Cakes have been a basic – but legendary – part of our family nights for as long as I can remember. Fluffy, flavourful and always guaranteed to put a smile on my boys’ faces, the cakes are my go-to treat for family nights, celebrations, or just because.
(I tend to find “just because” occasions multiple times per week. Who can blame me? The Marble Cake is a game changer. And the kids never say no to chocolate and vanilla.)
These days, it’s getting more and more difficult to find time to get together as a family. There are sports practices, homework, my husband’s business travel and my own career and domestic responsibilities. And, as the kids grow and mature, they’re developing their own likes and preferences, which don’t always include challenging mom to a game of Family Feud.
But, we’re doing our best to make time to connect. Sometimes games night turns into movie night, which is briefly interrupted for dance night, followed by snuggles-in-mommy’s-bed night. Through it all, I remind myself that my boys – once no larger than a loaf of bread! – will soon be off on their own. And that’s why I don’t mind when my 5-year old climbs into our bed at 2:00 AM, or when his 7-year old brother asks for another bedtime story.
In addition to being a fan of basic things, I’m also a fan of indulging my boys when it comes to simple pleasures in life. Because, as a very wise pop artist once told me, Love Don’t Cost a Thing. And McCain Deep’n Delicious Cake won’t break the bank, either.
As the cold weather settles in and our schedules get even busier, we’ll have to work hard at setting aside time to spend as a family. However, whether we’re challenging each other to a board game or simply trying to get through a pile of homework, there are always smiles, tight hugs… and cake.
