Picture Perfect: Holiday Hair To ‘Do List

November 11, 2016 By Lena 29 Comments

This post was sponsored by Dove, Nexxus®, TRESemmé® and Shoppers Drug Mart. The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, who is a paid influencer, and are not indicative of the opinions or positions of Dove, Nexxus, TRESemmé and Shoppers Drug Mart.

This holiday season, I’m all about pulling together classically chic looks with minimal effort and maximum effect. It’s no secret that my go-to hairstyle is the voluminous blowout; it lends a fun, modern vibe and is suitable for all hair lengths and textures.

Have you ever worried about being “overdressed” for a holiday party or get together? Me too. Often, I text fellow invitees or the hostess in a vain attempt to fit in with the crowd, but often hear the maddening response, “Oh, just wear what you’re comfortable in!”

Spoiler: I am comfortable in yoga pants and a t-shirt.

So, over the years, I’ve come up with a fool-proof way to be perfectly outfitted for a party, and believe it or not, it involves my hairdo. (Yes! Keep reading!)

You see, I find that a flirty, volume-packed blowout is the perfect way to “dress down” an outfit, even when the outfit is formal wear. Loose waves, a textured crown and even a touch of bed-hair prowess sends the message that although you’ve made an effort, you clearly don’t take yourself too seriously. And while there’s a time and place for structured waves and chic updos, a perfectly smooth blowout is a great way of communicating cool confidence with a big, flowy dramatic look.
_dsc0561aAre you on board? Here’s a simple Holiday To ‘Do List to help you achieve the style with ease!

‘DO: Select the right styling aids. Volume-filled hair always needs a little help, so start with a quality product like Nexxus Mousse Plus Volumizing Foam. It creates incredible body and fullness with a spectacular shine (and no sticky residue!). …

Escaping the Cold? Make a Winter Travel Checklist

February 5, 2016 By Lena

For Canadians, escaping the winter is a thing.

And why not? Winter travel down south offers an opportunity to get away from the cold, endure one less week of slush, sleet and snow, and trade windchill values for humidex values. Okay, so it’s not just a thing… for many, it’s a necessity.
12070644_1502206640097187_1907736570_nOf course, while jetting off to a sunny vacation in the throes of winter is the epitome of awesome, it also presents its own set of challenges that requires some planning ahead. My advice? Make a winter travel checklist! …

What Will You Do? Where Will You Be… When You’re Flu-Free?

February 1, 2016 By Lena

This past weekend, I was out and about. I shopped for groceries, attended my son’s indoor soccer game, took my other son to a birthday party and even managed to squeeze in a quick brunch with a friend, which yielded the following plate of scrambled eggs.

I think I’ve been eating scrambled eggs the wrong way my entire life. Oh-Em-Gee.
12556141_1005051036240084_1934865149_nMy weekend was fun, productive, and most of all – I didn’t miss out on life’s little adventures because I was sick at home with the flu.

How did you celebrate a flu-free weekend? I posed the question to my followers on Twitter, and it was heartwarming to read all your responses! From enjoying time outdoors with the kids to celebrating birthdays and anniversaries, nothing kept you down. Congratulations on being winter warriors! …

It’s Snot Your Imagination: The Ins and Outs of Sick-Etiquette

November 21, 2015 By Lena

Ah, flu season. Why are you a thing?

I suppose it comes with the territory of being Canadian; as children strap on hockey skates and parents pull on their warmest toques, so shall the influenza virus make its way through schools, businesses and homes alike. It’s clockwork, it takes no prisoners, and it really, really has poor timing – striking when you’re mostly likely to least expect it.
(Well hello there, co-workers! Stock photos like this exist for a reason!)

Yes, flu season is here, and there IS such a thing called Sick-Etiquette. Simply stated, it’s a collection of unspoken rules that you should abide by during cold and flu season, and I’m happy to share them with you today! …

Face of the Day, Galactic-Style

October 2, 2015 By Lena

A short time ago in a theme park far, far away…

Okay, so it’s not *that* far away. (Only a 5-hour direct flight!) I had looked forward to this event for months, and when the time finally came, I was ready to morph into one of the greatest, most sassy droids known to mankind. This past Monday, at Mickey’s Halloween Party at Disneyland, I dressed up as the iconic R2-D2. (Click here for more details on my costume.)

My husband went as himself.
IMG_0739Okay, okay, he didn’t actually go as himself. He dressed up as the ultimate nerd! High-waisted pants and a matching bow tie to boot. (He even has that mouth/ jaw thing going on… it’s quite precious.)

To offset the whole Star Wars-geek thing, I opted for sultry, come-hither makeup using ARTDECO Cosmetics. Identified by its on-trend and fashion-forward designs, ARTDECO has been a cult favourite in Europe for years, and is now available in Canada at select Shoppers Drug Mart stores! Here’s how you can emulate the look, whether you’re trick-or-treating or enjoying date night. …

Finding Your Perfect Balance

July 15, 2015 By Lena

I think we can all officially say it… summer is here! And many Canadians are basking in the warmer weather, the longer days, and for those that have suffered this winter: the official end of cold and flu season.

However, even though we’re spending more time outdoors and ideally eating an abundance of fresh, local produce, sometimes our diet falls short of our nutritional goals. With many Canadian families juggling work, summer camp, sports activities and more, despite our best intentions, it’s easy to succumb to less desirable meals and snacks – ones that don’t provide the balanced nutrition that our bodies crave.

A balanced, healthy diet feeds your body with the vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids and other key nutrients you need. Think of the times when you’ve felt your best – chances are, you were eating well, keeping stress levels low, and finding time for physical activity. And if you find yourself needing a little extra push, supplements can definitely help fill the gap.
Year round, Canadians depend on a variety of supplements to keep them feeling their best. Think of supplements as an insurance policy; they help ensure that you’re always at your optimal health, especially when life is hectic and a balanced diet isn’t always an option. …

See You Later, Alligator

January 7, 2015 By Lena

To say I have dry skin is an understatement.

It occurred to me years ago that during winter, the skin on my arms and legs is chalky white, while my remaining epidermis is a tanned, olive hue. So what gives?

I scratch my skin until it resembles a flour bin. And, my husband has dubbed my dermal problem Alligator Skin Syndrome (ASS). Lovely, right?

Aveeno Skin Relief Fragrance Free LotionI know, I know, I KNOW there’s an easy fix – it’s the “L” word. Lotion.

And I have found relief. My go-to remedy – when I force myself to use it – is Aveeno Skin Relief Moisturizing Lotion. It revives extra-dry skin with extra-soothing moisture, and contains a triple oat formula (renowned for itch) and shea butter to help soothe winter-wrecked skin. Best of all, it’s 100% fragrance free, so my sensitive skin gets the 24-hour relief it deserves.

Until the scratch – flake – lotion Lena!! – ahhh cycle begins all over again.

Do you suffer from Alligator Skin Syndrome? Shoppers Drug Mart has you covered. You’ll find a wide selection of new skin care products to keep you and your family’s skin healthy this winter – plus, you can earn Shoppers Optimum Points on participating products.

(That’s what I like to call a Skin-Win! See what I did there?)

Of course, finding the right lotion can be daunting, especially with so many brands to choose from. So how do you find the perfect match for your winter-wrecked skin? Shoppers Drug Mart Beauty Experts offer in-store complimentary skin care consultations using the beautyRx tool. The Skin Analysis consists of:

1. Moisture Checker – measures you skins hydration levels
2. Video Microscope – magnifies your skin’s surface by 30 times to help diagnose your skin type

Based on your readings, the Beauty Expert will recommend skin care products accordingly. In addition to Aveeno Skin Relief Moisturizing Lotion, I’ve also dabbled in Jergens Vitamin E Replenishing Moisturizer, Nivea Extra Nourishing Body Milk, and Vaseline Total Moisture Dry Skin Lotion – all with great results. …

The Easy Gift Giving Solution

November 12, 2014 By Lena

Although I don’t like to admit it… from time to time, even I get stressed out by shopping.

(Yes, you are actually on Listen to Lena. No, do not adjust your computer monitor.)

The thing is, I have a certifiable problem – a medical anomaly, in fact – called prezzieselectophobia. It’s the fear of choosing the wrong holiday gift for someone. Sadly, treatment is currently not covered by any drug plans, but I do plan on lobbying the government for support. In the meantime, I employ coping techniques, such as accepting help from others who know a thing or two about holiday gifting.

This year, I’m taking advantage of GIFTS MADE EASY by Shoppers Drug Mart.
LogoShoppers Drug Mart has an abundance of inspiring gift ideas for everyone on your “nice list”, and this holiday season, shopping is even easier with their online gift finder that allows you to filter hundreds of gift ideas by price, categories, or the type of person you are shopping for.

(My inner prezzieselectophobic is at peace.) …

30 Days of Beauty = 30 Fabulous Looks!

August 19, 2014 By Lena

One of my favourite pastimes is trying to decode a celebrity’s “signature beauty look”. Often, it’s very easy – Gwen Stefani’s red lips, Lauren Conrad’s winged eyeliner, Beyoncé’s long blond extensions – but sometimes, it’s downright challenging. Think Christina Aguilera – who loves to completely overhaul her image every few seasons. Or Katy Perry, who can sport blue hair one night… and blonde hair the next. And I must pay homage to Madonna, who has been a beauty and style chameleon for decades.

I too have a signature beauty look. Can you guess? (The question is probably easier to answer for those who see me on a regular basis.) My favourite look is precisely lined eyes, cheeks defined with bronzer instead of blush, and dewy, nude lips. In fact, you could say I watched Jennifer Lopez’s If You Had My Love music video a few too many times in 1999… and decided the look was one worth hanging on to. But you know what? For tanned girls, it’s a classic beauty combo that never goes out of style.

30 Days of Beauty
has returned to Shoppers Drug Mart! In its 4th year, this national event (the biggest of the year!) runs now until September 14th, 2014.

0176-14-30-DOB-BB-alu-e1408314937903Pop into your local Shoppers Drug Mart throughout the month, where 30 Fabulous Looks will tell the story of 30 Days of Beauty through visuals, instructional “How-To’s”, and exciting 1-day only offers as well as campaign offers on all of your favourite beauty brands. Online, you can check out behind-the-scenes videos available on youtube.ca, and visit www.30daysofbeauty.ca, where you can uncover the 1-day offer for each day and be schooled on how to achieve all thirty of the 30 Fabulous Looks.

(Guess that’s a challenge to broaden my beauty horizons!)

BONUS: An exclusive gift with purchase is available August 23-August 29, 2014 when you spend $75 or more on Cosmetics, Skin Care or Fragrance. A beautiful Cosmetic Pouch, filled with over 25 beauty and fragrance samples, is fabulous and free!

And rest assured, the team of beauty experts at Shoppers Drug Mart is there to help, so if you have any makeup or skin care questions, it’s the perfect time to drop in for a consultation. Customers can even book a 5-minute makeover in-store and ask for their favourite 30 Days of Beauty look!

I stopped by Shoppers Drug Mart multiple times during the event last year, and I can attest that the savings are fabulous. Have a fave Cover Girl mascara? Like to stock up on your trusted Lancôme moisturizer? Bookmark www.30daysofbeauty.ca to stay on top of the offers and promos, so you’ll know when to pop in. (I think I still have a few unopened lip glosses from my haul last year.)

Tell me – do you have a signature beauty look?

Although this post has been generously sponsored by Shoppers Drug Mart, the opinions and language are all my own, and in no way do they reflect Shoppers Drug Mart.

Introducing: ARTDECO Cosmetics

April 7, 2014 By Lena

It’s no surprise that I have an affinity for artfully designed, beautifully packaged makeup. In fact, I often post photos of recent acquisitions… but then become too attached to the impeccable styling and craftsmanship of the items, and simply can’t bear to actually use them.

Let’s just say that if I ever quit my day job, I could open a makeup art gallery.

Hence, of course I am obsessed with ARTDECO Cosmetics. For some, they need no introduction; since officially launching in Canada last summer, they’ve gained a cult following by those inspired by trendsetting couture.

But for the rest of you who have yet to discover the brand, I thought it was only polite that I provide you with an informal introduction. You may have seen their fashion-froward products at Shoppers Drug Mart, where they enjoy residence at 66 select locations across Canada. This year, more than 20 new stores are expected to carry the line.

“The secret to ARTDECO’s success is in the company’s constant focus on the individual wishes and needs of all women, combined with uncompromising quality and reasonable pricing. ARTDECO offers a wealth of special products and refillable and magnetic beauty boxes, which allow users to customize their own color palette to their needs.” …

The Best Defense is a Good Offense #Giveaway

October 3, 2013 By Lena

Folks, it’s that time of year again. You know, when that unwanted, unapologetic, pesky little visitor infiltrates our communities for the next 6 months or so. Its name?

Influenza. Also known as the crappiest feeling of your life.

According to Health Canada, in a typical year, up to an estimated 25 per cent – or about 8.6 million Canadians – come down with the seasonal flu. I’ve been lucky to avoid the dreaded virus in winters past; but then, I don’t get out much, so my protective little bubble has served me well. However, for those who brave the elements (and germs) head on, Shoppers Drug Mart would like to offer one of my readers a chance to win a Cold and Flu Defense Kit to help prevent the flu and manage cold symptoms when they do occur.

Valued at over $150, the Shoppers Drug Mart Cold and Flu Defense Kit contains a $50 gift card to use at your local Shoppers Drug Mart, plus essential items you should have on hand including Life Brand hand sanitizer, Vapo Rub, a digital thermometer, sugar-free cough drops, facial tissue, Vitamins D and C, a cool mist humidifier and Simply Food Chicken Noodle Soup.

(FYI:  You can now get your annual flu shot by walking-in to SDM or booking an appointment online.)

Although I’m not here to tell you whether or not to take the flu shot (for the record, I do not), I do have one solid piece of advice I’d like everyone to follow: If you’re sick, for the love of God, please stay home. Seriously. NOBODY wants your germs, and no job/ class/ shopping trip/ get together is so important that you need to infect everyone within a 3-metre radius of your phlegmy curse. If more people took the time to isolate themselves and simply get better, we wouldn’t have an epidemic on our hands.

Ah well. One can dream. In the meantime, there’s the Cold and Flue Defense Kit. To enter, simply fill the form below with your qualifying entries. Good luck – and stay healthy!…

Shoppers Drug Mart is Cool Because Drizzy Says So

February 24, 2013 By Lena

A few weeks ago, while surfing the online entertainment sites, I somehow got looped into watching a video for Drake’s newest release – Started From the Bottom.

(I’ve linked the video instead of embedding it here because, let’s be honest, it’s Drake… and the lyrics are slightly explicit for delicate ears. Plus, I can’t understand half of what he says.)

Since it’s Drake and I have incredible respect for anyone from Toronto who’s made it to the big leagues, I paused to watch the video. In it, he pays homage to his days back in TO, including playing indoor soccer and working as a night manager at Shoppers Drug Mart.

After a good chuckle, I closed down the video and then took to Twitter to see what people were saying about it, because I’m curious like that. However, I was astonished at how many US media outlets were crediting “Walmart”, “variety stores” and “a Big Box Retailer” as the scene of Drake’s part-time job. DUDE! I recognized SDM the second I saw the uniform – never mind the tell-tale Life Brand product prominently featured by one discerning customer!

And so I did the only thing I could do – I set the record straight on Twitter. You’re welcome, Shoppers Drug Mart.

However, I soon realized that I was getting hot under the collar over a store that frankly, I hadn’t visited in months. How could a brand, so synonymous with Canadiana that I immediately recognized an employee uniform – have slipped off my radar for so long? I suppose, when it comes down to it, I’ve been lured by the convenience of the big boxes here in Canada; the chance to get everything in one place. And while I fill every prescription at SDM, I haven’t poked around there for quite a while. So, I decided to pay them a visit….

Paper or Plastic? RBC & Shoppers Optimum Unite!

May 6, 2012 By Lena

I’m one of those gals who never carries more than $8 in cash at any given time. So used to whipping out my debit and Visa card, I rarely remember to carry “emergency money” (as my husband calls it) and often find myself struggling to find an RBC ATM, because I flatly refuse to pay avoidable banking fees.  However, I always remember to tote along my loyalty cards (like Shoppers Drug Mart Optimum Points) because I fully believe in the shop-and-reward-yourself system. In fact, I’m not averse to doing a little more shopping to reap a few more rewards. It’s a win-win, no?

And so the NEW RBC Shoppers Optimum Banking Account suits me to a tee!

RBC and Shoppers Drug Mart have partnered to launch a Canada-wide program that makes it more convenient for Canadians to bank and earn rewards at Shoppers Drug Mart/Pharmaprix locations across the country. The program features a co-branded RBC Shoppers Optimum banking account and debit card with enhanced Shoppers Optimum rewards.

This news rocks! If you’re a frequent customer of SDM, you benefit in so many ways:

I love that you can exchange RBC Rewards points for Optimum points, making redemption for SDM goodies so much easier! And since many Canadian families depend on Shoppers Drug Mart for all their health and beauty, baby and household needs, it’s a match made in heaven.

So, you know that I rarely carry cash and protect my loyalty cards like they’re my offspring. Where do you fit in? RBC and Shoppers recently conducted a poll examining how Canadian men and women are using cash versus debit. Here are some of the key findings:

– Three-quarters of Canadian women (76%) typically carry $50 or less in their wallet compared to 66% of men.
– To keep cash in their wallets, men tend to use a bank machine up to twice a week (41%), compared to 33% of women (I cringe when I my husband uses a non-RBC ATM. Seriously, I scream at him).
– Almost three-in-ten women (28%) say they rarely or never withdraw cash, compared to 22% of men.
– Nine-in-ten women (89%) are part of a rewards program, slightly more than men (80%).

I can’t say I’m surprised at the findings – even though my husband holds two loyalty cards, I rarely see him whip them out, whereas I often hand over my loyalty card with my payment so I don’t forget to grab my points. With the new RBC Shoppers Optimum Banking Account, life just got a little more rewarding!

Disclosure: I was sent a gift card as a thank you for sharing details about the program. Any opinions expressed in this post are my own.
