Masterpass: My Favourite New Online Shopping Hack!

October 23, 2017 By Lena 229 Comments

Note: The following giveaway is open to Canadians only.

This past week, I did something I hadn’t done in a really, really long time.

I went to my local shopping mall. It was noisy, and crowded. At 11:00am on a weekday! Dear lord, don’t people have better things to do on a random Tuesday morning? And ugh, someone coughed in my general direction!

Okay, clearly it’s been a while since I’ve been around, er, people.

The thing is, I love shopping online. It’s the absolute best! I can save time by shopping whenever it suits me, whether that be late at night or over my lunch hour. I can save money because comparing prices is as easy as opening a new browser tab, and many companies offer “online only” deals. And most of all, I can save my sanity, because I can browse in the privacy of my own home, for as long as I like without pressure from well-meaning sales personnel.
Therefore, I have just one question for you: Why aren’t you shopping online?

Recently, I discovered Masterpass. And within days of setting up my account and using it at participating retailers, I realized that it single-handedly addresses so many of the concerns Canadians have when shopping online. Today, I’d love to share exactly how it overcomes those barriers, with the hope that by the end of this blog post, you too will be setting up your Masterpass account. …

Just Call Me Ms. Diaz

March 1, 2015 By Lena

Er… or maybe Mrs. Madden. Cameron Diaz is married now, yes?

Nevertheless, I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m obsessed with Cameron’s… everything.

Her style! Her hair! Her effortless way of exuding the perfect California beach babe. And through it all, remaining likable to both males (duh) and females alike. I mean, can anyone really hate on Cameron Diaz? She’s like the dream BFF (no offense to my BFF).

So it’s obvious that when I watched her performance in 2014’s The Other Woman, I instantly fell in love with her all over again. Of course, it *may* have had something to do with the fact that her character boasted the hottest collection of designer outfits and accessories – I’m talking drool-worthy with a capital D.

At the top of my list – her statement sunglasses from Saint Laurent, aptly named “BOLD1”. These YSL beauties are coveted for their classical look with a hint of modern styling, and although they are often listed as men’s sunglasses, they are striking on women as well.
DSC_0587The only problem? Finding them online was a chore, and when I did, they retailed for $345.00 USD. That’s over $430 Canadian! And while I’d be happy to spend that on a pair of sunnies I loved, I happen to own a lot of sunnies. So it just wasn’t in the cards.

Enter SmartBuyGlasses.ca. They afforded me the opportunity to review the site, and of course the very first thing I did was hunt down the Saint Laurent glasses. And not only did I find them; I found them for just $233.95 CDN with fast and FREE shipping. Hello!  …

I Never Met a Coupon I Didn’t Like.

July 28, 2014 By Lena

If you look back… way back… into my blog archives, you’ll uncover a not-so-dirty little secret. And that is… when I first started my blog back in 2008, it was simply a way for me to share coupons with my friends and family. You see, I had long been applauded for my deal-finding prowess, and decided to set up a central location where I could post all my epic finds. I was a couponer, loud and proud.

Of course, as my blog transitioned to more of an editorial journal, my frenzy of deal-related posts cooled off. But I never truly lost my frugal nature; I rarely pay full price (I have infinite patience when it comes to waiting for sales), I constantly look for the best promo of the season, and when shopping online, I always, always, ALWAYS look for online coupon codes.

It usually happens like this: I am speeding along in the online checkout process, and then, I see it. The field that says “PROMO CODE”. I am momentarily paralyzed as I wrack my brain for recent emails, searches, Facebook posts – anything that can save me a few extra dollars on my purchase. And then, if my mental catalogue of deals pulls up nothing tangible, I’ll often enlist the expertise of the coupon experts.

shopster-11Shopster is a brand NEW site that provides Canadian online shoppers with the biggest discounts from the biggest online stores. And here’s what sets them apart from the competition: while other coupon and deal sites think more coupons are better, Shopster believes big discounts from big names are way better! High five if you’re down with that!

A quick glance at the site reveals coupons for SHOP.CA, Canon, GAP, Cafe Press, The Home Depot and more.

Another pet peeve about most coupon sites? Well, they use automated programs to pull information from thousands of different online stores, many of which I’ve never even heard of. In fact, several of these stores don’t even ship to Canada! Really, what a colossal waste of time.

Shopster hand-picks every single store they work with and builds relationships with these stores. It’s all about the partnerships, folks! Then, they select each and every coupon or deal before it gets published to ensure that the discount is big enough to get people excited.

Because you don’t want 15% off at Martha’s Shirt Store, you want 60% off at Macy’s.

At Shopster, they aim to make it happen. I’ve been watching the deals for a few days now, and I’m curious to see how they’ll evolve as more coupons and savings are loaded onto the site. Regardless, it’s always good to have one more outlet that helps you save money. If you’re looking for online coupon codes, pop on over to Shopster and let me know if you find what you’re looking for. Click here to visit www.shopster.ca.

Boomerang Kids: Where Smart Families Shop

March 11, 2014 By Lena

If you’re a regular reader of Canadian blogs, you may have come across a post or two about Boomerang Kids, a Canadian franchise with resale stores in Ontario and Quebec. The posts would have told you that Boomerang Kids is North America’s first and only resale chain carrying children’s merchandise that’s available in-store and online. And maybe you would have agreed that nearly-new clothing is a great way to save money – after all, kids grow so quickly! And I’m sure you would have read a testimonial or two about the quality of the clothing, the availability and selection, and the benefits of purchasing perfectly reusable clothing.

This is not another one of those posts.

The truth is, I’m just not into resale. And that’s not a dig against those who choose to buy gently used items; it just means that personally, I don’t prefer it. (I also don’t prefer flimsy umbrellas, zip-lining or chocolate chip cookies.) While I donate used clothing to charity, and have even made a cool $34 after dropping off some of Ryder’s old clothes to a local consignment store, I generally can’t get excited about a purchase unless I’m able to rip off the price tags myself. Must be the shopaholic in me, huh?

So when asked to check out Boomerang Kids online, I was understandably hesitant. After all, I couldn’t authentically extol the virtues of previously-loved children’s clothing and toys while admitting an obsession with brand spanking new items, could I? But then, I found out about 25% of Boomerang Kids stores’ merchandise is new product, or “factory fresh” items. Hooray! I just happen to have a factory fresh niece that I like to spoil. So, I went shopping.

Now I’ll just cut to the chase and tell you that I am deliriously happy with the majority of the process. However, for newbie shoppers shopping for new shoppertunities (say that 10 times fast), I’d love to share the following wisdom in order to make your online experience as pleasant as possible:

First, visit www.boomerangkids.com.

1) Shop one store at a time. You *could* shop the entire online inventory at once, but you’ll be charged $10 (average) or more (oversized items and toys) every time you add items from a different virtual store. Hence, it’s better to see if you can find a variety of items you like at one store rather than jump from location to location. Simply select “Shop Online Stores” to visit each store at a time.

2) Shop by Category, and then by Condition. For example, I selected Baby Clothes, and then scrolled down to “New with Tags”. This helped ensure that I was only perusing through the selection of brand new items. (Alternatively, you could also select “Factory Fresh” – Factory Fresh are brand new items that Boomerang Kids has purchased directly from the manufacturer.) Next, your best bet is to categorize by Gender, followed by Size, if you wish. Et voila! Access to Boomerang Kids’ online inventory. I couldn’t resist this gorgeous Spring dress – check out the epic detailing – it was only $11.99!

3) Place items in your virtual cart, pay, and you’re done. And then get ready for some seriously fast shipping. I ended up ordering a haul of precious baby girl outfits from three different locations, and they ALL arrived less than 24 hours later. The clothing was perfectly packed, folded with care, and oh! Did I mention the PRICES?…

GAPCSAVE? Don’t Mind if I Do!

January 14, 2014 By Lena

There are a handful of times during the year that I shop at GAP… when they offer savings like this.

As you probably know, I like to shop at season’s end for next year’s clothing, especially for my boys. This morning, I made off like a bandit for little Reid who will be starting kindergarten in the fall. In the end, my online shopping cart – filled to the brim with 16 items… totaled under $100 before taxes. Did I mention that a winter coat – normally retailing for $70.00 – was in that cart? Hell yeah.

I had my eye on the “Warmest Puffer Camo” for Ryder this year, but at $70.00, I flat-out refused to buy it. And regardless of what my husband will say, I’m not being cheap – I’m being realistic. Why on earth would I spend $70.00 on a coat he’d wear for one season?

However, using GAPCSAVE to score 50% off $55.99, Reid is the new owner of the coveted camo puffer at a price Mommy can live with – $27.99. YES, under $30 for a quality, water repellent, fleece-lined, down filled winter coat.

(I would’ve purchased one for Ryder too, but my big boy is on his last days of size 5T… he’s moving into boys’ sizes! Why do they grow up so quickly?)

If you’re looking to score some deals of your own, pop on over to www.gapcanada.ca before 11:59pm on January 15th. The women’s sale section is well stocked with gorgeous sweaters, and baby girl’s? OMG. Cuteness overload.

Be a Power Shopping Pro: AIR MILES Shops

December 13, 2013 By Lena

Friends, this weekend will go down in history as two of the busiest shopping days of the year. Yes, it’s the weekend before the weekend before Christmas! Also known as the time that panic sets in; you’ve got loved ones to shop for, and precious time is running out.

Okay, so I’m not going to try to alleviate your fears, because the truth is, y’all need to get it together. If there was ever a time to be a Power Shopping Pro, it’s NOW!

Shopping in person? Bring patience and *try* to remember the joyousness of the season as you stand in store lineups and navigate an overfull parking lot. And if you’re shopping online (my preferred option), be snappy: there are only a handful of days left to receive your items in time for Christmas.

Of course, I wouldn’t be a shopping guru unless I shared some of my best tips! This season, I’ve partnered with airmilesshops.ca to provide you with suggestions to make this year’s holiday shopping easy, fun and full of savings!

1. Mimic the man in red by making a list and checking it twice: Be sure to take into account stocking stuffers, hostess gifts and even wrapping paper. A good tip is to buy a few generic gifts (candles are always great!) just in case you receive a few unexpected gifts from acquaintances and neighbours and want to reciprocate the gesture.

2. Avoid the last-minute crowds by shopping online: Keep stress and overspending at bay by skipping the mall and shopping from the comforts of your own home. airmilesshops.ca is a one stop shopping destination with amazing retailers from Apple to Old Navy!

3. Work, family and neighbourhood holiday parties can take-up a lot of time, so make the most of a free hour by “power shopping” online: As all moms know, alone time is rare and precious which is why power shopping is so important! Take advantage of nap time, TV time or your lunch break to buy all of your gifts online at airmilesshops.ca.

4. If you just can’t avoid the last minute gift rush: Check items off your online list first and then head to the mall for any items left on your list. Beat the crowds by arriving right when the mall opens or closes and study the mall’s layout to ensure your shopping is as efficient as possible. Holiday bills can add-up fast so be sure to take advantage of special bonus offers: Using a shopping portal to make purchases, such as airmilesshops.ca, allows you to take advantage of special merchant offers while increasing your rewards points exponentially. For the most rewarding shopping experience, use both your AIR MILES Collector card and your affiliated credit card to complete a purchase and earn even more miles.

5. Don’t forget to rack up the rewards: While we are often asked if we collect AIR MILES reward miles when we shop in-store, we don’t receive that same cue when shopping online. Hence, make sure you set airmilesshops.ca as your home page RIGHT NOW. It will be your reminder to collect all those fabulous reward miles when you make your purchases this weekend and beyond!…

Walmart Online at 11:38pm? Don’t Mind if I Do!

December 11, 2013 By Lena

You all know my obsession with shopping at Walmart Canada during off-peak hours. Yes, I am that girl, bundled up at 7:00am on a Sunday morning, pushing her cart through gloriously non-trafficked aisles. It’s probably one of the best feelings in the world!

Of course, the only snag in the ol’ plan is the fact that I actually have to bundle up and leave my house at 7:00am. Hence, when I heard about Walmart’s brand new e-commerce site, to say I was tickled pink is an understatement.

“Walmart Canada is looking to re-define the way customers shop online with the launch of its new e-commerce site. The newly redesigned site ensures customers get a seamless browsing experience , whether they’re shopping on a traditional desktop or laptop computer, a Smartphone or a tablet. Designed with a “tablet and touch” sensibility, the site features advanced functionalities such as a best-in-class search tool, location-based and personalized services, a simplified one-page checkout process and a guest checkout option, which allows customers to shop online without having to create an account.” – Walmart Canada

Good News: The new www.walmart.ca features a larger product selection across key categories such as baby, electronics, home and dry grocery.

GREAT News: There is FREE standard shipping on EVERY purchase – that’s right, no minimum spend!

Recently, Walmart reached out to me to see if I’d like to participate in a shopping challenge; spend $100 on items I’d normally shop for in-store using their new e-commerce site. Well, you know me – challenge accepted!…

#SHOPHappy with SHOP.CA: It’s a Twitter Party!

October 29, 2013 By Lena

FABULOUS news shopaholics… SHOP.CA is introducing eGift Cards this week! And what better way to celebrate their launch than an epic Twitter Party?

This holiday season, #SHOPHappy with free shipping, free returns, and now – the option to give the gift of SHOP.CA. You all know I’m a huge fan of gift cards. I prefer to give them 9 times out of 10 (except for little ones – shopping for toys and cute clothing is half the fun!). Perhaps my favourite quote on the subject is from Evelyn Harper of Two and a Half Men, when reproved by Alan for writing her grandson a cheque for his birthday gift, replied:

“You told me he likes Transformers. This cheque transforms into anything he wants.”

I’ll take one SHOP.CA eGift Card and transform it into a 55″ screen TV, thank you very much.

Join us on Wednesday, October 30th as we get a kick start on your shopping. There’ll be fabulous prizes (as always), so clear your calendar, RSVP below and “twarty” with us!…

The Monday Covet List

October 21, 2013 By Lena

Another Monday, another Covet List!

(A little background: Since I’ve decided that coveting is infinitely more agreeable than reckless spending, I was thrilled to be approached by Nadia Carriere of Child Mode to participate in the Monday Covet List. Together with some of my favorite fashion and style bloggers, Nicole Feliciano of Mom Trends, Vera Sweeney of Lady and the Blog and Audrey McClelland of Mom Generations, we’ll share 3-4 covet-worthy products that we are currently lusting over.)

Of course, I’ve realized that coming up with a covet list is way too easy because I tend to covet things all the time. This week, I’ve got the following gorgeous pieces on my mind (and perhaps favourited on my browser)…

This week I’m paying homage to one of my favourite Canadian purveyors of frugal fashion: Joe Fresh. The Loblaw Company apparel line, Canada’s biggest clothing brand, launched online shopping at the beginning of this month to eager consumers. And while I’ve never found it particularly difficult to find Joe Fresh clothing – living in close proximity to Loblaws, Real Canadian Superstore and the Joe Fresh stand-alone store at Heartland Shopping Centre – I do find it frustrating to sift through clothing to find a particular look or size, especially since each boutique is organized differently. And since I always spend more than $50 at Joe Fresh, I’m loving the fact that the clothing can be sent straight to my door at no extra cost.

HOT TIP: Check the SALE section frequently online. Right now you can grab long-sleeved tees (in 12 colours!) on clearance for just $4.94, and tank tops are a steal at just $3.94 each.

This week, I’ve got my eye on the following items –

Pictured, top to bottom: Ruffle Silk Shirt, $49; Long Puffer Jacket, $89; Wide Stripe Cardigan, $19.

Tell Me Something Good….

September 10, 2013 By Lena

Picture it: You’re scrolling through your Facebook news feed, and someone posts an update that includes an infographic. It may be funny; it may be inspirational, it may be downright timely due to current events. And when you see it, it speaks to you… and you must.click.LIKE.

That’s me. That’s usually how it goes. And that’s why I was in trouble while I shopped online at Chapters Indigo yesterday. You see – I’m a huge fan of inspirational quotes, and any time I find one of my favourite sayings emblazoned across a decor item, I simply must have it. Hence, I was in full-on shopaholic mode as I was confronted with an abundance of intellectual artistry. Here are some of my favourite pieces:

Designed in-house and exclusive to Indigo, their new mugs are generously sized with a comfortable handle to make them an instant favourite. Love the whimsical sayings – an especially pleasant way to greet a new day.

The mugs retail for $10.00 each, which is fabulous for gift giving, especially when stuffed with gourmet candy! In addition to Good Morning Beautiful, there’s Good Morning Handsome – and I think the pair makes a perfect housewarming gift for a newly married couple. Now who’s getting married?? I need to gift this!

I also adore the decorative pillows – not so much for the colours or prints, but for one very heartfelt saying that I now have tattooed on my brain: “Collect Moments, Not Things”.

They’re a *teeny* bit more expensive than I’d like to see at $39.50. However, I am very patient in my shoppertunistic ways and have no problem waiting for them to go on sale. Often, Chapters releases coupons for 25% off one item. Looks like I’ll have to build my inspirational pillow collection one item at a time!

Finally, these prints are on sale right now – 50% off – which means that I’ve already purchased one, of course. And I can’t wait for it to arrive! Yes, “Good Things Come to Those Who Hustle” will forever have a place on my office desk. Because it’s all about the hustle. It’s all about getting off your a** and making things happen. It’s all about working hard. I LOVE it.

Do you own a home decor item that speaks to you with your favourite quote?

Back to School 2013: Let’s Go Shopping! #Giveaway

August 17, 2013 By Lena

NOTE: The following giveaway is open to Canadians only.

As a year-round savvy shopper, the concept of “Back to School” shopping isn’t really a big deal chez Lena. After all, chances are I’ll find better prices on fall/winter clothes during the after-season clearance, and often, Friends & Family Events and other shopping promos offer just a good a deal.

However, I do believe that there’s something magical about starting off the school year with some new threads, so I always make it a point to supplement my boys’ wardrobe with some on-trend pieces at a great price. Of course, there’s no shortage of Back to School sales at the moment; everything from supplies to clothing to (gasp) spray tan. Yes, apparently one needs to have a golden glow while converting fractions to percentages.

Not surprisingly, a Visa Canada survey shows that Canadians are being more frugal in their back-to-school shopping, and are looking online for better prices and deals. In fact, 90% of Canadian shoppers will be setting a back-to-school budget, and 87% of shoppers surveyed admitted to “showrooming” – looking at items in store before buying them for less online. As a long-time advocate of online shopping, I’m thrilled to see that more and more folks are catching on to the money (and time) saving benefits of shopping from the comfort of your home.

This morning was no exception. Armed with a cup of my favourite French roast coffee in the wee hours of morning, I was delighted to take advantage of Old Navy’s Jeans Sale. Until August 29th, you can grab jeans starting at just $10 for the entire family! It’s a great way to stock up for back to school – for less.

Of course, being a money-saving ninja means that I do have a few additional tips for you:

1) Before you start shopping, sign up online for Old Navy’s mailing list (found at the bottom of the home page). You’ll instantly receive a coupon for 20% off your entire purchase! While the coupon did not work for the $10 jeans, it did work for those priced $11 and up. So, I was able to grab a few pairs of jeans regularly priced at $19.50 for just $8.80! That’s a savings of 55%!

2) Check out the SALE section for amazing discounts on swimwear, tees and shorts. Ladies bikini bottoms can be grabbed for as low as $1.99, and I even found some sweet swim trunks for both my little guys for next year. Want it? You Could Win It!

May 22, 2013 By Lena

Picture It: You’re at your favourite store, have selected your heart’s desire, and are in line at the checkout waiting to complete your purchase. The cashier scans your merchandise, and after announcing the total, asks in a detached voice – “AIR MILES?”

Well, at least she asked, right? Because when was the last time an online retailer asked if you collect AIR MILES rewards miles? Oh, that would be never.

Friends, it’s time to take matters into your own hands.

Now listen up, because once I tell you about this nifty little website, it will forever change the way you shop online – especially if you’re an AIR MILES collector. The kicker? It couldn’t be more simple!

Here’s what you do:

Step One: Visit airmilesshops.ca and sign in with your AIR MILES Collector Number.
Step Two: Select the retailer you want to shop with and shop as you normally would on their site.
Step Three: When you check out, you will earn AIR MILES reward miles on your purchase!*

(*Earn 1 AIR MILES reward mile for every $20 CDN that you spend per transaction per online store excluding shipping, handling and taxes.)

See? All you have to do is remember to sign in through the portal and you’ll automatically earn rewards. And since your privacy and security is of the utmost importance, each and every retailer that is under the “virtual roof” of airmilesshops.ca uses a secure SSL checkout. Hence, you’ll always have peace of mind when shopping online.

Curious about the participating brands? You should be! You’ll have a choice of over 100 major brand name stores, including Sears, The Apple Store Canada, Dell Canada, Chapters Indigo, Amazon.ca, eBay.ca, Lands’ End, LL Bean, Expedia, Bose, Victoria’s Secret and Hotels.com – just to name a few. My picks: ALDO Canada, Toys “R” Us, Old Navy Canada and Lancôme Canada, of course. BONUS: Top US retailers available through airmilesshops.ca include Macy’s, Neiman Marcus and JC Penny. Now that’s a rewarding cross-border shopping trip….

A Backyard Oasis

April 5, 2013 By Lena

When I think of summer, I think of only ONE thing: Drinks on a Patio.

Of course, before having children, that patio was usually located on College Street, the Danforth, or anywhere that wasn’t my own backyard. The good old days.

However, there’s a certain pleasure in having drinks in your own backyard: there’s no travel involved, you generally enjoy the company, and you don’t have to tip your server.

But here’s the kicker: I don’t actually have a patio! Since moving into our new home six years ago, we’ve had a lot of priorities for the inside of our house (a finished basement, a painted home, an upscale living room) but we were never ready to invest in our backyard. Truth is, for a long time we’ve wondered if we should stay or move, and that factored in our decision to delay the landscaping. And so we set up an old patio set on our lawn and let the kids run around in the summer. For the most part, it worked out well.

However, now that we’ve decided to stay put for a little while, it’s time to do things right. First on our agenda: a backyard makeover.

You knew it was coming… 2013 is the year of #ProjectPatio!

I’ll be sure to share lots of pictures over the upcoming months of how we transform our little backyard into a backyard oasis. In addition to a stamped concrete patio, we’ll be making an investment in a new barbecue, patio furniture and maybe even a paper lantern or two :)

I also admit to lusting over these outdoor fireplaces from Anywhere Fireplaces, available at SHOP.CA.

All the fireplaces are ventless, requiring no construction, chimney, or gas lines.  The sophisticated, contemporary style fireplaces are also eco-friendly, at a price within reach for almost anyone. More features and benefits:

– Burns liquid or gel bio-ethanol fuel
– Renewable resource
– Smokeless, odorless
– No soot or ash, no messy clean-up
– Non-polluting
– Only gives off water vapor and CO2

I love the idea of staying warm in style, because sometimes, even summer nights can feel chilly. Here’s a roundup of the more popular models –

Forget about candles and other table top accents to add ambiance. The Lexington Anywhere Fireplace brings you all the tabletop elegance you are looking for with its distinctive shape, high gloss white finish and its real flames. Enjoy the ambiance of a real fire but without the hassle of smoke, melting wax, soot, ash, smell etc. Use it on the dinner table, a low patio table, or a coffee table. This unit is slightly too small for a patio set, but I love the versatility from outdoor to indoor. Nikon HD Digital Camera System #Giveaway

February 26, 2013 By Lena

Note: The following giveaway is open to Canadians only.

Earlier this year, when thinking about goals for myself and my blog, I made a vow: I would do more “feel good” giveaways in 2013. That is, the chance to give back to my readers with prizes that aren’t necessarily attached to reviews; a few awesome things here and there “just because”.

I love when things fall into place.

You may remember the epic deal on UGG boots over at MTF Price Matters a few weeks ago. Listen to Lena readers were treated to an exclusive online coupon which took 25% off already discounted products – and let me tell you, stock went quickly. In fact, all but two sizes were sold out less than 24 hours later!

(UGG Classic Short Boots in Chocolate just became available in sizes 7 and 8, so act fast! Enter code “25OFFUGGS” at checkout to grab them for just $101.99 plus free shipping.)

From the popularity of this sale, I realized two things:

1. I have the most fabulous, fashion-conscious readers who also love a good deal.
2. MTF Price Matters has incredible promotions. Like, ridiculously good.

Now it could have all ended there, but then I received a call from MTF Price Matters, who wanted to say thank you to my readers for being awesome customers. And how are they saying “thank you”? Wait for it… I think there’s a feel good moment coming on…

By giving away this Nikon 1 J1 10.1 MP HD Digital Camera System with 10-30mm VR 1 Nikkor Lens, valued at $499.99!

“For your very mobile lifestyle comes a completely new imaging system with freedom to create and express as never before. Highly compact and portable, the Nikon 1 J1 goes everywhere you go. Moments from your amazing world are captured using a highly responsive autofocus and super fast shooting speed. In one touch you can work in Full HD (1080p) movie record mode. A camera so versatile you can even snap photos while recording movies. Unleash your creativity with Nikon 1—offering a balance of high performance, advanced features, portability and a newly designed interchangeable lens system. Infuse your world with photos from every moment and connect as never before.”

Where Have You Been Shopping this Boxing Week?

December 27, 2012 By Lena

Now I’m not sure you’ll believe me – but it’s TRUE – I didn’t venture out once on Boxing Day. Nope! Not even the lure of Yorkdale Shopping Centre open at 8:00am was enough to coax me into the malls. To tell the truth, I was in my Kozie all day long, watching a very epic Lord of the Rings marathon.

(If you don’t own the trilogy on Blu-ray, seriously, you are missing out. There’s nothing like Orlando Bloom in high definition to make the holidays bright.)

Okay, footed pjs and moviethons aside, I DID do a little bit of damage on the ol’ credit card by way of online shopping. After all, it’s the easiest (and most convenient) way to find the best deals! Comparison shopping online is as simple as opening up a new tab in your browser – no rushing from store to store trying to beat the crowds. (Bleh! Crowds!)

So where did I spend my time surfing?

Well, for electronics, SHOP.CA was leading the way. With a ton of doorcrasher items and huge savings on televisions (like this Toshiba 40” 1080p LCD TV for just $398.00) I was quite tickled to share the savings with my gadget-minded friends. At the moment, I am currently sitting on the fence over this Food Saver Hands-Free Vacuum Sealer Kit. Remember all those awesome infomercials that showed you how to keep food fresh for eons? It’s currently 54% off, retailing for just $64.99. That’s a steal! (What to do, what to do….) And finally, I spent a lot of time checking out this Hip Street Wireless iPhone & iPod Speaker System. Almost 40% off, peeps! If my bestie didn’t already have one, it would’ve made the perfect housewarming gift for when she moves later this year.

Next, clothing is always a consideration during Boxing Week. I stayed with the tried and true Holy Trinity: GAP, Old Navy and Banana Republic. Each store had a variety of promotions that changes every day (yesterday was an extra 50% sale items at GAP, today is an extra 25% regular priced items). Regardless, it is a very necessary stop when you have toddlers because you can often pick up some awesome staples for C-H-E-A-P. Case in point: yesterday, Old Navy was offering 30% off their entire store. This Frost Free Jacket – originally $39.94 – is currently marked down to $14. With an extra 30% off, I paid a cool $9.80 for Ryder’s second winter jacket. It’s less bulky than his current coat, which makes it perfect for long car rides and trips to the mall with Mommy.

Think about it… 9 bucks… how can you go wrong? With today’s 25% off you can still grab it for $10.50 (all sizes available at 5:00pm EST).

Finally, no Boxing Day would be complete without popping by The Body Shop. When you buy a $5 Bag for Life, you can take 50% off your entire purchase. And don’t forget to check out their outlet – you can find mad savings on a variety of bath and body items (not included in the Bag for Life promo; but all items are discounted by at least 50%, so still a great deal).

My pick? This Strawberry Shower, Scrub and Soften Deluxe Gift on sale for $25 (reg price $50). The ultimate gift for strawberry lovers, this luxurious box set is packed with treats for bath and body, including Strawberry Shower Gel, Strawberry Body Polish, Strawberry Body Butter, Strawberry Lip Balm, Strawberry Beautifying Oil and Red Bath Gloves.

I love that it can be gifted all year round and I adore the presentation. And with all Body Shop products, thrilled that the items are cruelty-free and your purchase always gives back to great initiatives.

So as you can see, I didn’t go crazy this Boxing Week, but that’s probably a testament to all the wonderful things I already have :) Did you score any awesome deals? Share the savings – tell us about your haul!

Money Back in My Wallet? YES Please.

November 14, 2012 By Lena

It’s not like you’re not aware the holidays are around the corner… unless you’ve finally found a way to live in a bubble.

(I want in! I’d be the perfect Bubble Girl. I wash my hands 74 times per day and distrust everyone.)

Well, for the rest of us earth dwellers, the holiday season is upon us! And you know what that means – good cheer, peace on earth… and spending a ton of money on presents. Oh, my wallet is already feeling the burn!

Now there are a few ways you can make it through the season without resorting to food stamps, and I just happen to have a foolproof way to reward yourself this year. And, it’s a no-brainer. Are you ready?

Introducing the PayPal Cash Back Holiday Campaign. Simply register at www.paypal.ca/cashback and then pay with PayPal for your first transaction. Then, you’ll receive 5 per cent cash back on all your additional purchases made with PayPal until December 10th. So if you’re looking for an easier, faster, safer way to shop online this holiday season and a simple way to save money – visit paypal.ca/cashback to sign up and see offer terms and conditions.

In case that wasn’t clear enough (I’m not patronizing you; my husband just asked me to explain it to him again):

1. Make sure you have a Canadian PayPal account, or sign up for one.
2. Register to let them know you’re interested in free money.
3. Every time you shop somewhere PayPal is accepted, pay with your PayPal account.
4. Let the good times roll.

Another reason this promotion rocks? You can double dip the chip, so to speak. Because PayPal gives you the option to pay with your credit card too, you can accumulate your card’s loyal rewards PLUS earn cash back at the same time. So, when I buy the boys’ toys from www.toysrus.ca this year, I’ll gain travel rewards on my Scotiabank Gold AMEX and 5 per cent cash back from PayPal. Win-win!

Okay, so who’s going to treat themselves to a little spending money this holiday season? Waving hand over here!

(ps. You can keep your shopping experience easy and secure with PayPal. You’re protected against items you didn’t receive as well as unauthorized payments, and the beauty of using PayPal is that you don’t have to keep entering your financial details each time you shop. Save time and money!)

And now… time to shop! Hurry – promotion ends December 10th!

These Kozies are Kind of Crazy…

November 10, 2012 By Lena

… but I kind of LOVE them.

Think about it – if you’ve ever dressed a little baby in a sleeper and thought, Damn, that looks sooo warm and cozy – here’s your chance to get in on some of that action.

Kozies are now available at SHOP.CA! They’re the closest thing to an adult sleeper you’ll encounter, and if you’re the type of person who hates feeling cold (waving like crazy over here), you’ll adore these fuzzy, warm robes.

From SHOP.CA: “Kozies are made from 100% polyester and are the fuzziest things you will slip into all winter. Kozies cover you completely from your neck all the way down to your feet. Anti-slip soles will stop you from slipping and sliding across smooth surfaces. The ankles are very stretchy and allow for lots of room for pants, or thick socks. Perhaps the best feature? It is undoubtedly the flap at the back which allows for washroom use if necessary!”

Okay, so straight up: I’m buying two; one for me and one for my husband. We do things like snuggle up and watch movies on cold winter nights, and always reach for our robes as soon as we wake in the morning. I can’t think of a better – or more adorable – way to stay cozy Kozie this winter. At the moment I’m torn between the owl print and cupcake print for myself, but I’m fairly sure I can’t go wrong with the ninjas for my husband :)

(Of course, there’s always the beer print – not pictured – but that’s a bit much.)

They retail for $49.99 – $54.99, which is actually quite decent considering robes can retail for $50+ (and they don’t cover you from head to toe). Ladies, I think a his/her set would be the perfect gift for you and your man this Christmas. Many of the styles are unisex, so you could even be matchy-matchy if you like! It’s also a fun gift for older children away at college/university (dorm rooms are notoriously cold!) or friends in colder climates.

Okay, after much thought, I’m going with the owl print. And I promise – pictures to follow :)
