Masterpass: My Favourite New Online Shopping Hack!

This past week, I did something I hadn’t done in a really, really long time.

I went to my local shopping mall. It was noisy, and crowded. At 11:00am on a weekday! Dear lord, don’t people have better things to do on a random Tuesday morning? And ugh, someone coughed in my general direction!

Okay, clearly it’s been a while since I’ve been around, er, people.

The thing is, I love shopping online. It’s the absolute best! I can save time by shopping whenever it suits me, whether that be late at night or over my lunch hour. I can save money because comparing prices is as easy as opening a new browser tab, and many companies offer “online only” deals. And most of all, I can save my sanity, because I can browse in the privacy of my own home, for as long as I like without pressure from well-meaning sales personnel.
Therefore, I have just one question for you: Why aren’t you shopping online?

Recently, I discovered Masterpass. And within days of setting up my account and using it at participating retailers, I realized that it single-handedly addresses so many of the concerns Canadians have when shopping online. Today, I’d love to share exactly how it overcomes those barriers, with the hope that by the end of this blog post, you too will be setting up your Masterpass account. 

But first, what is Masterpass? Masterpass is a simple, convenient and completely safe service for faster shopping at thousands of online retailers, including, most recently, Costco.ca! There are NO additional fees for consumers to use Masterpass, and it’s welcomed online and in app at thousands of your favorite stores – just look for the Masterpass button!
Step 1: Visit mastercard.ca/masterpass to sign up with your email address or mobile number. Choose a secure password using a combination of letters and numbers.

Step 2: Set up your account with shipping information and method of payment. Your method of payment can be credit, debit, or prepaid cards from all the payment brands you use: Mastercard, Amex, Visa and others.

Step 3: Visit your favourite Masterpass retailers to order items. As mentioned previously, you can now use Masterpass at Costco.ca! I know A LOT of my readers are Costco members, so this is fabulous news. Some other popular retailers that offer Masterpass are Indigo, Joe Fresh, Pizza Pizza and Cineplex.

Step 4: Simply click on the Masterpass button to pay. So simple!

So, how can having a Masterpass account encourage you to shop online? Here are some of the most popular reasons against online shopping, and my rebuttal.

1. I’m afraid my credit card information will be compromised.

Yeah, I get it. It happens – less frequently than you think, considering the millions of e-commerce transactions that take place every day – but sure, it may be a concern. However, when you pay with Masterpass, your single account is protected by multiple layers of security so it’s guarded from fraudulent use..

2. I can never recall my credit card number and it’s such a pain to get it from my wallet.

With Masterpass, skip the hassle of filling out personal payment information to make purchases. Just click on the Masterpass button, login, and your secure payment details and shipping information will instantly be pulled up. It’s a fast, simple, secure way to pay.

3. I hate filling out forms.

Circle back to #2 above, friends! With Masterpass, you’ll only need to fill a form out ONCE – then all you have to do is login to your account. It couldn’t be more simple. Frankly, Masterpass is my favourite hack for saving time while shopping online!

    I love so much about online shopping!! Being able to shop at any time of the day; being able to shop in my pajamas; not having to bring my kids shopping; being able to quickly source out what I need without having to drive around; being able to almost instantly find the best price; having items sent directly to my home; having a huge selection. The one thing I don’t like is the inability to try clothes on. I am 6 feet tall so I cannot buy clothes without trying them on – there is not a standard size that seems to fit me (I can wear sizing from XS up to XL depending on the brand, and even depending on different styles within a brand).

    Shopping in the privacy of your home & at your own convenience without pressure that the store would close at 9 pm is the biggest benefit for me. There’s no need to look for a parking spot or wait for transit to come, perfect for when there’s a winter, rain storm or, changes to the transit service that will affect your travel. There’s no line-up and you can always save the items you’re not yet buying through your Wish List. I also don’t like getting sick from someone who coughs or sneezes without covering their mouths. You can also get cash back through ebates. Being able to see the total purchase with tax and shipping before finalizing it allows you to remove items without the cashier getting a manager to override the system, causing further delays to yourself and other shoppers. The only drawback is that big items can’t be left at your front door or lobby of an apartment building so, you have to be at home when they deliver. I also take the time to recycle the packaging as they are often very good, sturdy boxes that can be re-used.

    I buy 99.9% of my books online. I got thru ebates first, then head to indigo (Because you only have to have a $25 min order) and lots of times they have discount codes in their newsletters or totally free shipping weekends. You also get points from them (plum rewards) that can be used to get free things. I follow a ton of authors on bookbub and goodreads and thats usually how I find new books, books that are usually not in a store because they are new authors.

    I hate online shopping because there are hackers out there that hack into store accounts & steal your information. There are scams that take your money for shoddy merchandise or. don’t send you the product. It’s hard to buy things like shoes that you can’t try on to see if they fit.

    I love the convenience of online shopping (especially if you don’t have the store where you live/or nearby or if you don’t drive) earning cashback from Ebates & Swagbucks is awesome! i also love that alot of times stores have online clearance’s for great prices. The only down side to online shopping would be taking a risk when buying clothes (too big/too small, the quality, material) but if you already shop at certain clothes stores you kind of get an idea of how the sizes of the clothes are and plus most online stores use a size chart which helps alot.

    I think online shopping is great and convenient. It is also very easy to put things in your basket and then when it comes time to checkout you almost fall off your chair as items can add up rather quickly. As I do work for a retailer I see many customers come in with returns and that is perfectly fine as they may have received a great deal, better than what we are offering in store. As for me, I need to see the product, touch it and feel it because sometimes what you see is what you get.

I don’t like online shopping because I won’t buy clothes or shes without trying them on first. And if they don’t fit, sometimes you have to pay shipping to return items. For furniture, I want to sit on a sofa or chair, see how comfortable it is. I want to check the seams for quality too.
