This year, over 40,000 Canadians will take part in a powerful movement to create a world without type 1 diabetes (T1D) at the JDRF TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes.
Will you join in?
It’s no secret that I passionately support the fight again type 1 diabetes; loyal readers will agree that I’ve chatted about its effects – and our need for a cure – several times on my blog. That means you (or someone you know, someone you love) will be impacted by this disease. The number of people living with type 1 diabetes is increasing by 5% annually – and the greatest rise is in children under five years of age.
But we can change the script.
Be part of a collective rally that brings together thousands of people whose lives are touched by type 1 diabetes every day – who are tired of the hardship of this disease, who want to be heard, raise money and change the face of T1D forever. This year, the #TELUSWalk Toronto takes place on Sunday, June 11th, beginning at 9:00am. Here’s how it works:
Register. You can register as an individual, join a team or create a team of your own. Then, set a personal fundraising goal and customize your fundraising page.
Keep It Social! Write a few lines on what the JDRF TELUS Walk means to you and share why you’re walking. Share your fundraising page directly with your friends and followers, and don’t forget to include #TELUSWalk and #JDRFWalk in your social posts to keep news of the walk on your friends’ timelines!
Walk. Find inspiration, courage and strength from all the others who’ll walk proudly alongside you, supporting a cause that is close to your heart and theirs. In years past, I’ve joined the Peel/Halton region TELUS Walk. The sense of community and togetherness is unparalleled; almost everyone I chatted with had a direct connection to someone affected by diabetes. My own family was walking for a friend’s daughter, diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 7 years old. It gave me a sense of hope and pride to know we had raised money with the goal of accelerating progress on the most promising opportunities for curing, treating, and preventing the disease.
This year, however, I’ll be out of town for my local Walk, so I’ve chosen to donate to JDRF directly. If you’re in a similar boat and can’t attend a Walk, here’s how you can support JDRF’s goal of improving the lives of all people affected by T1D:
Pledge a Walker. Support friends, family, and co-workers participating in the TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes.
Make a General Donation. Make a gift to JDRF in your own name to support critical diabetes research.
Register for the JDRF Virtual Walk. Walk virtually anywhere in support of JDRF and all Canadians impacted by T1D. Walk where and when you want, indoors or outdoors. You decide how you want to participate. Simply set a goal of walking a total of 150 KM anytime between May 1st and July 1st, 2017.
Honour a Loved One. Make a donation to honour someone you love, or celebrate a special occasion. JDRF will send a personalized card to the person you honour on your behalf.
Join Canadians from coast to coast as they walk to cure diabetes. To find a walk near you, visit jdrf.ca/walk.

We don’t have a walk locally but, as a health worker who treats children with diabetes, I know that this a very worthy cause that definitely deserves public support.
