Ayurveda: Find Your Balance

December 12, 2016 By Lena

I don’t just “pop in for a quick spot of tea.”

Growing up, I observed tea to be a ritual – never rushed. Tea leaves were selected by the season, the temperature, and sometimes, even the time of day. Aromatic spices were added for fragrance and flavour; the blends customized with cooling herbs or spicy roots.

The focus was never on tea as a beverage – rather, a cup of tea was a means of achieving nourishment, comfort, and most of all, balance.

Tetley Ayurvedic Balance teas were inspired by one of the world’s oldest holistic healing systems, Ayurveda. Developed more than 5,000 years ago, the word Ayurveda in Sanskrit means “science of life” – its practice teaches that holistic well-being is achieved through the balance of the mind, body and spirit.
_dsc0843aToday, as much as I’d love to continue the rituals from years past, I realize my restraints on time. That’s why I look to Tetley Ayurvedic Balance teas; each tea addresses a common situation or need state related to one of the three doshas – Vata, Pitta, Kapha.

The Vata Dosha. Derived from the elements of Space and Air, Vata translates as “that which moves things.” It is the energy of movement and the force governing all biological activity.
_dsc0849aTetley Ayurvedic Balance Poise-Vata Tea is a centering tea with natural ingredients to enjoy when feeling scattered or worried. It is made of a rich and complex herbal blend with a warming length of spicy cinnamon.

The Pitta Dosha. Derived from the elements of Fire and Water, Pitta translates as “that which cooks.” Pitta is the energy of digestion and metabolism in the body, and those with a predominance of the Pitta principle have a fiery nature in both body and mind.
_dsc0847aTetley Ayurvedic Balance Cool-Pitta is a cooling tea with natural ingredients to enjoy when you are feeling overheated. It offers a cooling herbal blend of mints with a subtle lemon twist.

The Kapha Dosha. Kapha, derived from the elements of Earth and Water, translates as “that which sticks.” Kapha can be thought of as the essential cement, glue, and lubrication of the body in one.
_dsc0844aTetley Ayurvedic Balance Vigour-Kapha is an uplifting tea with natural ingredients to enjoy when you are feeling sluggish. It is made of a heating gingery blend with a hint of tingly mint.

The science of Ayurveda believes that everyone has a unique mix of the three doshas predetermined at birth and many people are dominant in one or two doshas. When all three doshas are present in this natural proportion, we are said to be in balance.

Are you in balance? Am I? Currently, I’d have to say no. The holidays are the busiest season for me, and I often feel anxious, overly stressed and of course, exhausted from the late nights and early mornings. My mom would say, “relax, come over, and have a cup of tea.”

This season, I’m finding my balance with Tetley Ayurvedic Balance teas. Available exclusively in Canada, all varieties are caffeine-free and made of natural herbal ingredients. Best of all, the teas can be enjoyed with or without milk (says my mom: “you must have your tea with milk!”) for an authentic Indian tea experience.

I’m giving away 5 pairs of tickets TEA Talks, an exclusive event in Toronto on Saturday, January 14, 2017! Presented by Tetley, TEA Talks is a series of engaging workshops and discussions with leading Ayurvedic experts, including Yogi Cameron – a celebrity yoga and Ayurvedic guru. This is very interesting; balancing things in one’s life is so important; like taking time out for oneself; a quiet place; could be a room or a place in nature or wherever you can regain your energy.

That’s interesting about the “milk” quote you mom says. I was always told that to truely enjoy the taste of your tea you need to drink it “clear” . Very interesting.

Thanks for introducing this new tea line to me, Lena! As a tea blogger, I would love to attend to learn more and connect with other fellow tea drinkers. I actually wrote a tea book that even focuses on making tea a ritual, and enjoying tea as it is meant…slowly ☺

I’ve been sampling a lot of the tea shops in the GTA (Ten Ren, Green Grotto, Go for Tea etc) & continue to find that anything with green apple black tea is the way to go! Wish there was a way to bring that taste home.

I finally made it home from Christmas shopping and put my feet up and am enjoying your blogs by the fireplace. You know that saying, Shop til you drop? …I don’t recommend it! I am drained and exhausted as I am looking at the items that now have to be gift-wrapped. This time out to relax before I tackle more, inspired me to truly take more than a minute for myself. I steeped a hot cup of double spiced chai tea and sweetened it with sugar and added milk. ;) Ahhhh. This must be the balance that you mentioned when you spoke of the Vata Dosha. My energy is regrouping as I calm down from rushing about. I am looking forward to trying the Tetley Ayurvedic Balance teas. I am off now to google ‘Tulsi’. Om.
