“Good. Really good. I actually think I may like them more.”
Remember that quote. Because it came from an 8-year old kid who tried a different version of one of his favourite snacks – this time, made with the goodness of brown rice. And he really, really liked it.
Meet Ryder. He’s no stranger to Rice Krispies Squares. Having enjoyed them since he was in kindergarten, they’re one of his preferred lunchbox snacks. He loves the crispy and chewy texture; I love that they’re portable, enriched with essential nutrients and are trans fat free.
However, I recently discovered NEW Rice Krispies Square Bars Brown Rice. They’re made with no artificial colours, contain 8 g of whole grain per serving and offer the same ooey gooey taste that Ryder knows and loves.
So, I did what every mom would do – I switched them in my son’s lunchbox without telling him. Ha ha.
Okay, so I’m joking. First, I wouldn’t do that to Ryder – he loves to eat and his lunchbox always comes home empty, but that’s mostly because he has a hand in packing his lunch. We select the fruit, vegetables, protein and snacks the night before, and he lets me know what he prefers and what he’ll eat because he knows it’s good for him.
Second, I truly believe that a child’s school snack should be a treat. They’re spending hours away from home, stretching their little minds and putting their skills and knowledge to the test. Lunchtime and recess are well-deserved breaks, and a balanced meal, with cookies or bars as a snack, are a-okay with me. The fact that Rice Krispies Square Bars Brown Rice also provide the goodness of brown rice is a bonus, as far as I’m concerned.
Back to our little experiment. I did in fact switch over to Rice Krispies Square Bars Brown Rice, but I took a moment to give Ryder the head’s up. Today, before school, I invited him to check out his lunchbox! And specifically asked him to poke around to see if there was anything different about it.
He opened the lunchbox slowly, and I *think* I heard him murmur, “Wow, Mom. Now what have you done…” Kids, right?
He immediately zoned in on the Rice Krispies Square Bars Brown Rice, because, truth be told, brown rice doesn’t look exactly like white rice. (And why should it?) However, as you can see from the photos above and below, the change is oh-so-slight and only the eagle eyes of an older child would likely pick up on it (my 6-year old didn’t notice at all).
Ryder turned the bar around in his hands, inspecting it as all children inspect their food.
“Can I eat it now?” he asked. I obliged. One, because I was hoping to document this taste test, and two, because I wanted to ensure he enjoyed the taste before I packed it in his lunch.
He took a big bite, smiling. “How is it, Ryder?” I asked. “Good. Really good. I actually think I may like them more.”
Verdict: he actually LOVES them, and so do I! The brown rice adds a subtle nutty flavour, but all the elements of the classic treat are there: light and crispy with a chewy marshmallow-y goodness. We will officially be adding Rice Krispies Square Bars Brown Rice to our snack time and school lunchbox rotation!
I’m a Mom and I #ApproveThisLunchbox! And I encourage you to try Rice Krispies Square Bars Brown Rice too – I’m sure your kids will give them a thumbs up, just like Ryder did!
