There are things I upgrade all the time.
My cell phone. My handbags. My hi-lites, patio cushions and iTunes collection.
I love to be on the up-and-up of the newest technology, the latest trends, and of course, the most sought-after products of the moment. It may not be your cup of tea, but that’s what makes everyone different, right?
But, how often do you upgrade your small appliances – like vacuums? Conventional wisdom says, “As long as it’s working, why do you need a new one?” And I’m not here to find ways to empty your wallet; rather, let’s have a congenial discussion on some of the reasons you’d want to make the investment.
Time. Older technology small appliances like humidifiers, fans and vacuums often take longer to get the same job done. How many times have you pushed a hand vacuum over the same area multiple times, or cut the same area of lawn twice? While it’s tempting to make do with an older product, the smartest thing to do is place a value on your time spent. What could you be doing if you weren’t fussing with an inferior machine?
Performance. Closely related to time, the performance of a small appliance is one of the main reasons consumers tend to upgrade in the first place. Imagine if we all used manual washboards, or made coffee with a French press! With technological advances comes improvements in performance and automation. And when a product performs well, your quality of life improves.
Health. When a vacuum cleaner loses suction, it leaves dust and allergens in your home. Choosing to upgrade your existing vacuum to a cyclone helps to eliminate more microscopic particles than a traditional bagged upright. And in the case of an air purifier, all units are not created equally. Look for one endorsed by the Asthma Society of Canada, and one that covers an appropriate square footage.
Energy Savings. There’s a reason Canadians demanded that cars become more fuel-efficient, light bulbs more energy-efficient, and that washing machines conserve water. It’s because we love our environment! Newer small appliances are almost always more eco-friendly than older models, which is another reason upgrading may be the right decision for you.
Peace of Mind. Some folks just like the assurance of having the latest and greatest. Current models mean product warranties, efficient customer service and parts that are readily available should the appliance require servicing. And, when combined with the other four reasons above, and available budget to do so, upgrading a small appliance is a great way to improve your experience – especially when it involves cleaning!
So, where do I stand? I’m an upgrader. I like to ensure that the products I use are technologically advanced, environmentally friendly and carry warranties that I can rely on should I need them. Recently, I was extended an opportunity to review the NEW Dyson Cinetic DC77 Upright Vacuum, which is so efficient at dust separation, there are no filters to wash or replace.
Wondering how this “upgraded” version fared against my tried-and-true, older model Dyson? You’ll just have to stay tuned to find out!
From Dyson: “First we got rid of the bag. Now 22 years later the next breakthrough in 21st century vacuum technology: a vacuum with no bags to change, and now no filters to wash or replace. Pushing the boundaries of cyclone technology through relentless engineering, Dyson engineers have developed Dyson Cinetic Science. Cinetic science was initially introduced in Canada in August of 2014 as a canister format. Now, Cinetic science has been elongated and is available as an upright variant for those who prefer to push versus pull. The machine is so efficient it doesn’t rely on a filter – making it the first vacuum that truly does not lose suction.”
In the meantime, I’m curious – is it time to upgrade? Do you keep on top of the latest and greatest?

We upgraded our vacuum this last year, figured it was time to get a new one even though the old one was working. Figured the newer technology would help us clean better.
