One of my first memories of being a new mom was signing up with the Canadian Mother Resource. It’s the source for everything from preconception to pre-school and beyond, and I was pleased to receive offers and samples from many of their partners. It’s That Time of Year Again: #PurifyYourAir

It’s September, which means that the dreaded allergy and flu season is here.

Here’s the thing: Annually, Canadians invest $9.1 billion in janitorial and sanitation supplies to clean surfaces, remove odours and kill germs with touch-free hand sanitizers – none of which address the issue of illness from air transmission. Because even with all these products, if your child has asthma, there’s a 1 in 4 chance he or she will be heading to hospital this month.

Let’s Chat About the Playground! #PolyHealingIndex

You don’t know what fear is until you let two young boys loose at the playground.

“Don’t jump – it’s too high!”
“Watch your step… no pushing!”
“Slow down, you’re going to bump into something or someone!”
“STOP! Just STOP!”

(All words bellowed by me at one time or another while taking my kids to the local park.)

And you know what? I’m not alone. According to a recent survey of 500 Canadian moms with at least one child between the ages of 2 and 10, 71% have pain on the brain according to POLYSPORIN’s Healing Index, with the majority expressing that they are concerned about their children getting hurt while playing. In fact, 8 out of 10 mothers monitor their children closely with the aim to prevent any kind of physical harm. Sounds like you? Me too!

However, I know that the playground is an important place for child development, and want my kids to have freedom when playing even if it leads to getting hurt. Minor cuts and scrapes are part of being a kid! And I do realize that while accidents aren’t always preventable, I can do my best to kiss those boo-boos better.

The #cleanwater Twitter Chat

FACT: 80% of Canadians take clean drinking water for granted… while one billion go without.

It can be said that nearly all Canadians enjoy an unlimited supply of clean water, so it’s no surprise that a survey by P&G and Walmart Canada found that the majority of us take safe drinking water for granted. And, many of us may be shocked to learn that one billion people in the developing world do not have the same luxury.

FACT: Diseases from contaminated water kill more children than HIV/AIDS and malaria combined.

To help combat this global issue, last year P&G and Walmart Canada teamed up to donate one day of clean drinking water for every P&G household product purchased at Walmart or Walmart.ca. The Canadian initiative supported the Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program (CSDW) that aims to save one life every hour by 2020 through the provision of two billion litres of clean water each year.

FACT: Canadian actor and #cleanwater activist, Jason Priestley, supports the initiative.

“More than 1,600 children die every single day from water-borne illnesses,” says Jason Priestley, who recently visited rural batey communities in the Dominican Republic where he was able witness the impact of the P&G Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program first-hand. “I believe that everyone should have clean water. As a dad, the thought of children dying every day from preventable diseases caused by lack of clean water is an unfathomable tragedy.”

Have Your Dessert… and Eat it Too!

Family Dinner. One of the best ways to connect as a family, bond with your children, and create lifelong healthy eating habits.

(It’s also a great time to find out who your child’s first crush is. Tee-hee!)

Unfortunately, sitting down to share a meal with loved ones is becoming less common; Statistics Canada has reported that Canadians are now 10% more likely to eat meals alone than they were in previous decades. But there are so many benefits to sitting down to eat with your children on a regular basis! First and foremost, it provides structure to a child’s day. It helps build a stronger family unit, especially when kids share some of the responsibility for picking the meal and helping with its preparation.

And when parents provide a balanced meal, children eat more nutritious food, and they learn to respect their appetite.

But what about dessert? How often does the entire family stay at the table together to satisfy their sweet tooth? When dessert is a regular part of a family meal, children develop healthier attitudes towards sugar and sweets.
