From my previous post, Love It or List It? The Case for Decision-Making Renos, you’ll know that after nine long years with our berber carpet on our home’s second floor, it was time for a change.
However, settling on the perfect hardwood flooring – even when you’re simply matching one floor to the next – is not a quick and simple process. There are many variables that can influence the colour, type and price of the flooring you choose. Today, let’s go over the Top Five Factors When Selecting Hardwood Flooring. …
The Home Depot Canada
The Home Depot Canada: Welcome to Christmas Central!
It’s only a small percentage of my readers, but they do exist. The people who have no idea that The Home Depot Canada is the BEST place to find beautiful and whimsical, classic or contemporary holiday décor.
Still in the dark? Come join me in the light. Lights. Christmas lights.
Recently, I had an opportunity to attend The Home Depot Canada’s holiday preview, which was chock full of design and décor inspiration for every taste (and budget). Whether you’re looking to be the talk of your neighbourhood with standout lighting, add some sparkle to your classic collection of ornaments or liven your space with some Canadian-grown greenery, The Home Depot Canada is #ChristmasCentral. …
Love It or List It? The Case for Decision-Making Renos
Next July, we will have been in our home for 10 years.
Our home was supposed to be a “starter home”. The first real estate purchase as an entry point into the market; a tidy semi-detached house in the suburbs that would be a stepping stone to a more expansive property down the road.
Except, while we were unpacking boxes and re-stocking kitchen cabinets, I was running to the bathroom with bouts of sickness.
Folks, I am a statistic. We conceived a honeymoon baby.
Suddenly, the dark hardwood we had selected for our main floor was doomed to show scratches from children’s toys. The expensive, hand-woven berber carpet on the second floor would no doubt be victim to spills and stains. The money we had spent on builder upgrades – oh, all the upgrades! – should have been spent on strollers and diapers. However, we had no choice but to plough ahead, effectively turning our starter home into our “TBD” home.
It didn’t make sense to move. The boys were growing and the house grew old with them. As predicted, the hardwood floors became scuffed and the carpet bore stains. But, we also put a lot of love into the home, finishing the basement, landscaping the front and updating the back with a stamped concrete patio.
And every so often, we got the itch to move. …
Welcome to #ChristmasCentral!
My husband and I don’t always agree on everything. In fact, more often than not, we have a ying-yang thing going on. However, right around this time, as the snow flutters to the ground and Christmas carols play softly on the radio, we both agree that The Home Depot Canada is Christmas Central.

Patio Perfection? It’s Possible with The Home Depot
I want to have it all.
I want a gorgeous outdoor dining set that’s functional, stylish and ever-ready to entertain guests for a scrumptious barbecue feast on any given weekend.
I want a modern, luxe outdoor sofa set that reflects my personal style and preference for quality finishes, allowing for relaxation and friendly conversations, wine glasses in hand.
And I want to have them both in a suburban backyard with limited space. Crazy, right?
But who says I can’t have it all. I can – and I do – courtesy of a little shuffling on my part and this stunning Settina 9pc Estate Collection from The Home Depot Canada.
I’ve been working on turning my backyard into an oasis for some time now. First, we designed a stamped concrete patio and furnished it with a beautifully intricate outdoor dining set from The Home Depot. Next, I adopted a green thumb, and with the help of a foliage master, created a mini garden to flank either side of the patio. My backyard retreat was finally coming together! It was just missing one thing: a place to stretch out and relax. However, given the limited size of our patio, I was unclear about my options. …
DIY: Quick Holiday Showpiece
When it comes to holiday decor, I’ve always been a believer that “more is more”.
Oh sure, simple and streamlined works for everyday life, but Christmas only comes once a year! Hence, I revel in the splendour of the season, and that includes holiday touches at every turn.
This year, I wanted to create a simple showpiece for the fireplace mantle that could double as a table centerpiece or side table decor. And thanks to my friends at The Home Depot, I was able to find everything I needed to make a stunning display. It’s not too late to find everything you need for the holidays in-store and online at www.homedepot.ca.
First, I hung up my brand new wreath – a Home Accents 32 inch Holiday Wreath With Silver Balls. I love that it’s incredibly large with a full, thick appearance. It fills the wall over my mantle in proportion to the allotted space, making it a great investment for corner fireplaces.
However, that’s not the DIY – just the inspiration behind it. You see, I’ve been playing around with mixed metals – wearing a gold watch with my platinum rings, coordinating a rosegold clutch with a bronze belt. And for the most part, I am loving the look. So it’s only natural that I channeled the same inspiration for my decor, and decided to a mashup of brown, copper, silver and gold. …

Let’s Do Spring… With Style
I’m one of those annoyingly optimistic people who truly believe that if you say something often enough, it will actually come true. Let’s practice, shall we?
The weather is warm outside. Spring is on the way. The weather is warm outside. Spring is on the way.
I know, I know. At this very moment, I’m pulling my robe around myself more tightly as I hear the wind rustling through the trees. But have faith, friends! May is only two days away, and May has a very good track record of bringing the beautiful weather. *Crosses fingers and toes*
So, to put myself in a sunny frame of mind, I’ve selected my favourite seasonal pieces from The Home Depot Canada. After all, spring is the time to prep the garden, clear the backyard and start planning your outdoor oasis – and The Home Depot has everything you need to get started. From outdoor décor and power to live goods, a local associate is always ready with some tips and tricks to help you prepare for the warmer weather.
(Shout out to the staff at The Home Depot – some of my favourite peeps on the planet! They’ve offered expert advice, mediation, crisis management and babysitting services.. and that was all in the same visit.)

#ProjectManCave: Entertainment Me
I have a confession to make.
Instead of blogging this amazing before and after post, I’ve been sitting in my new Man Cave and enjoying the ambiance. I’ve watched movies; decorated a tree, and even savoured a glass (or three) of wine. And as I sat in my basement, caressed by the warm glow of the fireplace and feet cozily buried in my soft shag rug, I said to myself, “I’d better get my a** in gear.”
(Remember when I pledged that it was time to Take Back the Basement? I think I took it too literally.)
As such, here I am. Today, I’ll be revealing one room – the entertainment area – and showing you exactly how you can duplicate my efforts to complete your own Man Cave, with materials from Home Depot Canada!
But first, the “Before” and “After” –
It’s official: we have taken back the basement….
Oh the Weather Outside is Frightful…
… But the fire is so delightful!
Little by little, #ProjectManCave is becoming a reality. What you’re seeing above:
1) BEHR Premuim Plus Paint in Bolero (right wall)
2) HAMPTON BAY Danstan Wall Mount Fireplace
3) SASSI 6 inch X 24 inch Dorada Ledgestone
All available at Home Depot Canada.
It may be hard to detect in the photo, but we offset the fireplace on the ledgestone to create geometric interest; it’s angled more to the left than right, and is positioned 3 feet from the leather sectional, which is the manufacturer’s recommended distance. And since our pot lights are equipped with dimmers, the fireplace looks oh so delightful.
#ProjectManCave continues!
The Cave that Took Over My Life
Hello friends! If you’ve noticed the sporadic nature of my posts this week, high five! It means that you’ve missed me, and I love you for that. However, I am around… I’m just otherwise occupied, turning my basement into a Man Cave.
Three things: Home Depot Canada. Behr Paint. Entertainment Area.
Oh, it’s coming along nicely. Want a sneak peek? Sure! What was this….
Now looks like this:
Of course, it’s only a work in progress. The storage unit you see is actually just a place holder for our television (which will now be on the opposite wall that we had it orginally). Of course, the reason for the swap is so that we can make room for our brand new, wall mounted electric fireplace.
And this is just ONE room! #ProjectManCave continues and promises to take up much of my free time – but I LOVE it. We’re so pleased with the way the renos are going, and adore the products we’ve picked up at Home Depot Canada. The paint for this room was only $36.97, but look at what a difference it has made in warming up the room!
With that, I’m off to start my day… knowing that my night will be spent in my Man Cave. Have a great weekend all!
#ProjectManCave: Time to Take Back the Basement
I can think of many really, really satisfying things in life, but the three that top my list, consistently, are:
1. Putting On Clothes Straight from the Dryer
2. Finding Money You Didn’t Know You Had
3. Witnessing Truly Horrendous “Before” Pictures…
… and then watching the miracle unfold with the “After” reveal. Yes, I may be absolutely obsessed with The Property Brothers for this very reason (notwithstanding the fact that they’re, you know, gorgeous). I mean, who doesn’t love a good before and after? There’s just something so rewarding about witnessing a pumpkin turn into a coach; an ugly duckling turning into a swan… you get my drift.
And in the case of my basement, we’ll be turning our play date dungeon into a dream Man Cave.
Play date dungeon, you ask?
Ah… I don’t even think I can continue. The clutter is just SO embarrassing! Okay, okay, I’ll just get it over with nice and quick, like ripping off a Band-Aid….
Yes, this is the sorry state of our basement. I’d love to say that it is completely strewn with toys because I took the photos after a play date, but the truth is, it pretty much always looks this way. You see, I’ve got two feisty little boys who love to make a mess, and no amount of chastising, lecturing, and good housekeeping advice can prevent them from turning our basement into their personal path of destruction….
Hibernate with Me! It’s Time for #ProjectManCave!
Baby, it’s cold outside… okay, I know I’m just being a diva. It’s not that cold. But it’s not 28°C either, which is the weather forecast for Orlando, Florida today.
(Is there a time machine that transports your entire home to a sunny destination for 6 months?)
The thing is, as much as I detest the icy temperatures, I do love living in Canada. It’s the people; the rich mix of cultures; the opportunity to achieve your life goals. And for hypochondriacs like myself, the free healthcare is a bonus, too. But with the good, there’s always a bad, right?
It’s called Canadian winter. And even though I’ve had 35 frigid seasons to get accustomed to the climate, I’m not (and will never be) a snow bunny. In fact, I truly believe that great Grizzly Bears of the true north have it right: When the Weather Isn’t Great, You Hibernate. (Disclaimer: no grizzly has ever uttered these words.)
And if you’re going to hibernate, you’d best hibernate in style! Ladies and gentlemen, I’m so pleased to announce a cool little renovation I’m undertaking with The Home Depot Canada – it’s #ProjectManCave! This fall, in preparation of the cold temperatures ahead, I’ll be turning my basement from a play date dungeon to a dream Man Cave.
“Man caves have multiple purposes: they are a place to be alone, to be away from women and from female sensibilities, to indulge in hobbies, and to hang out with male friends. It is, loosely, a male-only space to retreat to watch sports matches, or play video games. Some psychologists claim that a man cave can provide refuge from stressful surroundings and be beneficial to marriage.” (Source)
Okay, so I realize that right about now you may be thinking, “What gives, Lena? Why would you possibly be so excited about a space that takes your man away from you?”
Well folks, it’s simple. Have you met my husband? He’s likely the most metrosexual man I’ve ever encountered. Yes, that’s him on the right, modelling one of his favourite fashion finds. Yes, he asked me to take the photo. Yes, he asked me if his hair looked okay.
He’s wearing a William Rast blazer we found in the States at a great price. Since the fabric and fit is half sweater, half blazer, he officially dubbed this article of clothing “The Swazer”. NOW do you understand the extent of his metrosexuality? No normal “dude” could come up with a description like that.
Hence, when I use the term “Man Cave” – what I’m really envisioning is a posh, contemporary-designed basement where I’ll love to kick back and entertain the girls, too! I honestly couldn’t be happier to help create a space for my husband. Fact: he has better taste than I do.
The best part? ALL of our small renovation needs can be found at The Home Depot Canada! From shag rugs to wine coolers, bathroom vanities to electric fireplaces, it’s so simple to rejuvenate a space on a budget. I always say that it’s the small changes that bring about BIG results – like a boldly painted feature wall, an artfully arranged play area or a clean, modern powder room.
Stay tuned – I’ve taken some pretty scary “before” photos right after a recent play date. Let’s just say that my husband and I are looking forward to reclaiming the basement as our own! The sea of toys is about to break us….

The Delicious Food Show
I struggled to find an appropriate title for this blog post, but then I realized it’s probably best to keep it simple, as “The Delicious Food Show” really does speak for itself. Yes folks, there are delicious times ahead.
If you live in the Greater Toronto Area, good news! Your weekend just got a little more tasty.
“From the creators of the One of a Kind Show and the Interior Design Show comes the Delicious Food Show, returning for its sophomore year to the Better Living Centre in Toronto, Canada from October 25-27, 2013. The Delicious Food Show is an interactive consumer-based tradeshow showcasing the latest and hottest in food products, wine and spirits, restaurants and food equipment.
Mike Chalut will host The Food Network’s Celebrity Kitchen presented by The Home Depot Canada, upon which some of the world’s most notable culinary genii – including Martha Stewart, Michael Smith, Nadia G, Chuck Hughes, Lynn Crawford and David Rocco – will lead cooking demonstrations and entertaining presentations. This year’s show is solidifying itself as the food show of all food shows – get ready to sauté, sizzle and simmer the weekend away.”
As a woman who appreciates delicious food, I am thrilled to have received a media invitation on behalf of The Home Depot Canada. Today, I’ll be attending a press conference with Ms. Martha Stewart, touring the incredible show floor and of course, sampling the most delectable food from a host of exhibitors. …
#ProjectPatio & The Home Depot Canada #Giveaway
NOTE: The following giveaway is open to Canadians only.
With the end of the season right around the corner…. yeah, I know. Bite my tongue; it’s finally starting to feel like summer in Southwestern Ontario.
Regardless, in just a few short weeks, the kiddos will be back in school, I’ll be breaking out my Tory Burch riding boots, and sadly, packing away my patio furniture. Ah, my beloved #ProjectPatio.
I want to express sincere thanks to all those who followed along as we turned our backyard from ordinary to an oasis. Since the reno was completed back in May, I’ve enjoyed many drinks on the patio, and have even developed a new appreciation for barbecued everything.
Of course, I also have to show my appreciation to The Home Depot Canada, who partnered with me on this amazing makeover. I am so fortunate to have teamed up with the world’s largest home improvement specialty retailer; a company whose core values include respect for all people, giving back to communities and of course, excellent customer service. Thank you so much for helping us create the patio of our dreams!
Now if you’re thinking that it’s time to take on your own #ProjectPatio for 2014, there’s no better time to get started; you’ll recall from my Buy it Now! Hampton Bay Millstone Dining Set post that many of the dining sets are on sale (check in store for the best prices – only a few options left!) and you can find great deals on other summer must-haves as well. And… shhh… a little birdie told me that y’all should be checking out Home Depot Canada’s enviable selection of BBQs over the next 2-3 weeks… you may be BLOWN AWAY by the amazing prices!
Speaking of BBQs, we’re kind of obsessed with our Weber Genesis S-330 Natural Gas Grill. The top-of-the-line grill creates an atmosphere of pure grilling excellence! Its high-heat Sear Station burner, three standard stainless steel burners and electronic ignition system are just a few of the noteworthy features we can’t resist.
So WHY all the patio talk, so close to the end of the season? Trust me, I’m not trying to torture you. I simply want to provide some inspiration for your own #ProjectPatio for 2014… and The Home Depot Canada will provide some FABULOUS incentive!…
Grill On. The Weber Genesis S-330 Natural Gas Grill
Disclaimer: Reviewing the Weber Genesis S-330 Natural Gas Grill is kind of like reviewing a luxury car. I mean really, what’s not to love? You simply won’t find a better grill for the price.
We were fortunate to receive the grill for review from The Home Depot Canada as part of our #ProjectPatio overhaul. Now in the spirit of being completely honest… and you know I always am… I actually haven’t used this grill once. Frankly, I don’t even know how to turn it on. To me, it’s nothing more than a shiny new appliance that looks kind of spectacular on my shiny new patio.
However, the MAN CHEF in my family is near-orgasmic over this contraption. In fact, my husband has attributed most of his happiness this summer to the addition of the BBQ. Hence, when he’s not wiping it down or admiring it from afar (yes, I have caught him staring), he can usually speak to its features and attributes.
“This stainless steel rendition of our top-of-the-line Genesis natural gas grill creates an atmosphere of pure grilling excellence. It’s high-heat Sear Station burner, three standard stainless steel burners, and electronic ignition system are just a few of the noteworthy features you won’t be able to resist.” – Weber Grills
– 38,000 BTU cooking system provides powerful heat and performance
– The 10,600 BTU sear burner is designed to step up the heat on demand for searing
– The 12,000 BTU flush mounted side burner let’s you multi task at the grill
– The stainless steel rod cooking grids have a 7mm diameter
– Includes a 10-foot flexible natural gas hose
– Two stainless steel work surfaces offer plenty of room for all your grilling needs
Of course, before I let him get into the nitty gritty, here’s what I like about the Weber Genesis S-330 Natural Gas Grill:
Okay, it’s pretty obvious that I’m a huge fan of our new BBQ, for obvious, delicious reasons. But why is my husband on cloud nine?…
Buy it Now! Hampton Bay Millstone Dining Set
So many of y’all fell in LOVE with my Hampton Bay Millstone Dining Set, available at the Home Depot Canada. It was prominently featured in my #ProjectPatio: The BIG Reveal! post, and we too coveted the set from the first moment we laid eyes on it.
(And now that I’ve hyperlinked the hell out of it, it’s time to get down to business!)
Here’s the deal. When we first started planning for our backyard patio, we assumed that we would prefer lounge-type seating. After all, drinks on the patio and wicker sectionals go hand-in-hand, no? However, after much thought and a careful reassessment of our family habits, eating preferences and lifestyle, we concurred that a standard dining set would likely be the better choice. However, I was very particular about the features of the dining set; it had to have:
a) comfortable seating for six
b) sturdy, stackable chairs, and preferably two that reclined
c) a unique style that is contemporary yet functional
d) rust proof framing and weather resistant fabric
e) a timeless colour coombination that coordinates well with all décor
Thankfully, it didn’t take long before we settled on the Hampton Bay Millstone Dining Set. I was quite taken with the cast iron dining table; its intricate design and aged bronze powder coated finish was perfectly stylish and functional, and I appreciated the quality of the design….

#ProjectPatio: The BIG Reveal!
Well, it’s been an interesting few weeks. (*Shakes fist at Mother Nature*)
Back when I first announced #ProjectPatio, I truly believed that my backyard oasis was around the corner. Like, days away. But then, a little something happened – a frost warning. IN MAY. Followed by days of rain and chilly weather. In case you didn’t know, frost + rain + chilly weather = Lena’s non-patio.
It was exceptionally difficult because we had these gorgeous pieces from the Home Depot Canada simply sitting in our garage; it was almost blasphemes not to put a WEBER Genesis S-330 to use (trust me, my husband tried), and I longed to break in my new Hampton Bay Millstone Dining Set. Still, we gave Mother Nature a wide berth and waited for the temps to turn around.
Finally, shortly after the May long weekend, I finally had a chance to bid adios to my plain, uninspiring backyard.
The above picture was taken seconds after the work crew began to dig; I realized in panic that I didn’t have any “before” photos. Not much to look at, to tell the truth; a vast landscape of overgrown grass and a lonely bubble mower. …
