Ask a Canadian, in fall, what he or she is doing over the weekend, and you’ll invariably receive an answer like this:
“I’m cleaning up the front yard. And the back. We have a ton of leaves to rake.”
T’is the season of knit sweaters, pumpkin spice lattes and leaves. Leaves everywhere! Sure, they’re fun for the kids… especially naughty younger brothers…
But for adults, raking season can be a pain! Let’s be real, there are so many things I’d rather do than sweep up a pile of fallen leaves, especially since they convey a stark reminder that winter is around the corner. And the truth is, I don’t have the best technique – watching me rake leaves is akin to watching some toddlers try to dance in step. (Let’s just say there’s a distinct lack of coordination.) In my experience, the wrong leaf raking method always leads to muscle and joint pain. Bummer.
The good news? Autumn leaves don’t have to get the better of us. Take note of these Advil 12 Hour “Re-Leaf” Raking Tips:
Learn the proper techniques. The right moves make the difference! Use your legs to shift your weight while raking, rather than twisting your back. Switch your lead arm regularly to help avoid exhausting your muscles with repetitive motions. And, bend with your knees instead of your back when lifting.
Ease in with stretching. Raking leaves may not seem as physically demanding as a gym workout, but it can take a toll on your body. Stretching beforehand warms up your muscles and stretching afterwards can relieve muscle tension.
Find the right-sized rake. Using a rake that’s too long or short forces you to contort your body, causing sore back muscles. Choose a good quality rake that allows you to reach leaves a fair distance away from your feet without having to bend or twist.
And, of course, one of the most important things to remember is to always listen to your body. Know when it’s time to take a break! If you have lots of leaves to rake and you’re feeling sore, take a time-out instead of trying to push through the pain.
If you do need some “Re-Leaf”, non-prescription pain relievers like Advil 12 Hour can provide fast-acting and long-lasting pain relief. Best of all, Advil 12 Hour’s effective immediate release/ extended release formula works to relieve pain in two phases: a quick burst for relief that’s fast and extended release for relief that lasts. As someone who manages muscle, back, joint and arthritis pain daily (I know, I’m a mess!), I always look to Advil 12 Hour for long lasting relief in just one pill.
Now, there’s never a good time for pain, but there is a good time to buy the Advil products you trust. Save $3.00 on select Advil products – simply select your region and print your coupons at home.
Good luck, friends! May your pumpkin spice latte be piping hot and your leaf raking responsibilities be short, sweet and painless!
