Welcome, friends, to our very favourite season – it’s fall, of course! The season of apple picking and spiced lattes; colourful leaves and decorated pumpkins. Now that the heat and humidity have made a departure, it’s time to pull on your cardigan and cute boots and enjoy this splendid season.
I love spending time outdoors with my boys. It’s so refreshing to be able to stay outside for the whole day without battling the elements! And today, I’m here to share some of my favourite family activities for making the most of autumn – so load the kiddies into the car, grab a mulled apple cider and get ready for some outdoor fun!
Rolling in the Deep (Leaves). Watching my boys have a good old fashioned crunchy leaf fight is such a hoot! If you don’t have a large property with copious amounts of tree fall-off, visit your nearest park or conservation area.
We always head to Erindale Park in Mississauga, where fallen leaves are plentiful. Another great spot is Riverwood Conservancy, where animal lovers can spot furry friends scampering about!
Long Walks and Fresh Air. Be still my heart! This photo gives me the feels. My boys idolize their daddy and the bond between them is so strong.
However, as they grow and gain independence, I can see them slowly pulling away, establishing boundaries and developing into their personalities. That’s why I cherish the times we can just hang out, enjoying our surroundings and connecting with nature – and each other.
Take a Road Trip. Ditch the electronics and tell the kids to look out the window and witness the beautiful spread Mother Nature has offered.
I love taking “road trips to nowhere” in fall; we inevitably end up at a bakery, farm or park where the kids can enjoy a treat or burn off some excess energy. If you live in Southern Ontario, take the drive down the QEW to Niagara Falls to be awarded with breathtaking views of autumn in its element.
Stargazing. Fall is the perfect time of year to go stargazing, as it gets dark early but temps haven’t plummeted just yet. We assemble folding chairs and a telescope in our own backyard! Dress warm, make it fun, and give your eyes plenty of time to get accustomed to the dark.
I love to serve “1-Minute Apple Cider”; I simply heat Allen’s Apple Juice for 45 seconds in a microwave-safe mug and stir with a cinnamon stick before serving. It’s the perfect way to warm up on a chilly night, and the boys love it!
Apple Picking. Of course you must go apple picking in the fall! A long-standing tradition with my family, we’ve already visited Chudleigh’s Apple Farm twice this year. In addition to picking the sweetest apples right off the tree, the boys had a blast at the petting zoo, racing through the hay maze and of course, taking on the enormous slide!
Visiting an orchard is a fabulous and fun way to help your children develop an appreciation for the fall harvest; in addition to learning how fruit is grown and harvested, we also get to decide how we’ll use all of our scrumptious bounty. My husband voted for apple fritters, the boys wanted homemade apple sauce, and I’m obsessed with recreating my mom’s apple cake. This year, we’ll do all three!
How do you enjoy the fall season with your family? I’d love to hear more suggestions of how we can get out and make the most of the outdoors. In the meantime, we’re waiting for the sky to turn dark purple so we can do a little stargazing.

While I don’t love the thought of winter approaching (and realistically here in Winnipeg fall merges into winter pretty darn quickly) there is something so magical about fall that I just adore. Fall walks/hikes are my favorite hands down :)

Pumpkin picking and carving is a fun activity. We love playing in the leaves and we also like to get the last few campfires in. It’s fun sitting around the campfire in the fall, staying warm by the fire and enjoying some hot apple cider and s’mores!

My fav season, even though it has been more like a summer then a fall, I’m not complaining.

Unfortunately Fall was only about a fortnight here, it’s been freezing for weeks here and with snow of course. I need a shot of warmth and sunshine already and we have an awful long way to go yet!
