The Not-So-Secret Trick to Youthful Skin: SPF

May 30, 2017 By Lena 43 Comments

We live among a generation that is obsessed with finding the fountain of youth.

Social media. Celebrities. The cover of every fashion magazine. We’re constantly confronted with the notion that youth = happiness, and so we invest time, emotion, and of course, cold hard cash into fighting Mother Nature with a vengeance. We attempt to erase a variety of skin sins from our past: excessive sun exposure, smoking, poor diet, high stress, and a multitude of other grievances that have slowly but surely manifested into fine lines, spots and shadows.

We are constantly looking for a quick fix, a miracle cream, a secret trick to reverse the effects of time.

But what if I told you that there’s a simple way to protect, nourish and improve the look and feel of your skin? What if I told you that there’s proof that sunscreen reduces the signs of aging?

It’s the truth, of course. In addition to protection from skin cancer, regular use of sunscreen with a minimum SPF 30 protects against photoaging: the wrinkling, spotting and loss of elasticity caused by exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet radiation. In fact, simply adding a quality sunscreen to your daily skincare regime can help halt skin aging in its tracks.
Of course, all sunscreens are not created equal. NeoStrata Protective Lotion Mineral Sunscreen SPF 45 is a light, non-greasy lotion that protects skin from the harmful effects of the sun. Quickly absorbed and invisible, this daily lotion is non-comedogenic, so it’s suitable for even the most sensitive skin. And, when it’s paired with a quality moisturizer like Neostrata Wrinkle Repair Moisturizing Cream, you have the ultimate protection against the aging effects of the environment.

How else can you keep your skin safe from the effects of the sun?

Say no tanning beds. I know this should be a given, but there are still women who like to fake n’ bake. Regular use of tanning beds can increase your risk of melanoma by as much as 75 percent! This one’s a no-brainer: avoid them.

Be selective about your sunscreen. The best sunscreen is the one you will actually wear. If it is too greasy, too chalky or too fragrant, you won’t wear it. Choose a light lotion that wears well under makeup and is compatible with sensitive skin, such as NeoStrata Protective Lotion Mineral Sunscreen SPF 45. I’ve been using the sunscreen for the last month and I’m very content with the results; the formula applies easily and there’s no visible shine or powdery residue.

Inspect your skin. Examine your skin every few weeks or at least once per season, looking for signs of skin cancer. Melanoma has a variety of forms and can appear anywhere on the body, but about half of all melanomas start with a change in normal-looking skin. Being diligent about routine checks can make early detection possible.
Have you ever considered the anti-aging effects of sunscreen? Have you noticed a change in your own skin with regular use? Do tell!

Yes! I try to wear SPF everyday but it’s hard to find one that is lightweight, non-greasy, and doesn’t leave a white cast. This Neostrata sounds great though! I love that it is a mineral sunscreen too.

I believe in sunscreen. I am pretty careful about using it and so far so good, knock on wood. My skin is holding up not too badly.

I am diligent in wearing sunscreen, as my mom who is almost 80 is being treated for skin cancer, on her face. Her doctor told her these spots are from sun tanning in her early years. I look forward to trying the NeoStrata brand as I have enjoyed their products in the past. Thank you Lena for an important topic!

I love NeoStrata products, I use the sunscreen as well as a self tanner when I feel too pale – one of the few sunscreens that doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin. Sun protection is so important, I regret all my deep tans and burns when younger as I developed skin cancer & having your nose reconfigured to have cancer removed, is horrible. It’s better to be protected that to be tanned.

I am terrible at remembering to apply an SPF cream before going out – just doesn’t come to mind before I am out the door. Unfortunately, that means I am starting to show some early signs of aging skin. Pooh! Guess I need to make it more of a part of my daily regimen. Thanks!

When I was a teenager, many many years ago, we all went to tanning studios every now and again – there was no thought to the damage we might be doing to our skin. In fact when sunbathing we often used an oil sold as a suntan lotion. I shudder at the thought now.

I’ve used sunscreen every day since I was 20 and even though I work outside my skin looks like it did in my teens. I’m 41 and I have no wrinkles. People are always commenting on my good skin and I tell them the secret is sunscreen!

I worry so much about skin cancer as my grandfather had it… I fight with my daughter to wear it though. At 14 they never believe it will happen to them. Maybe a product like this will help convince her, I will certainly be asking her to read your post.

No, I’ve never thought about the anti-aging effects of sunscreen, though it is obvious when you think about it. One only has to look at sailors and what the sun has done to their skins.

Both my dad and sister have had skin cancer, so I’ve been really careful. I’ll spend money on a good product that I trust. I don’t want cancer and I also don’t like wrinkles!
I don’t understand how tanning beds are still allowed to be a thing.
