“But WHY is it called an ugly sweater?” my mom asked.
“Well,” I explained, “it’s like this. For years we’ve received these hideous – but well intentioned – holiday sweaters from parents and grandparents. And now it’s time to turn the tables and own it! So before you run out and buy me a Christmas-y sweater, I’m beating you to it. It’s ugly and I’m proud to wear it!”
“I still don’t really understand why it has to be ugly,” she replied. “Why can’t it be a nice sweater with a jolly Christmas motif? Like reindeer or elves or a picturesque snowy Christmas town?”
POINT. MADE.
It’s colourful. It’s ironic. It’s like Christmas exploded and you swept up all the pieces and turned it into jaunty pullover. Whatever it is, the ugly Christmas sweater has marked a special place in our hearts during the holiday season.
But who says it needs to be reserved for the big day? If you’re like me, and like to revel in the magic of the season for as long as possible, the ugly Christmas sweater can become a holiday wardrobe staple. Here’s how to do it.
1. Find your version of ugly. I purchased our ugly Christmas sweaters from Walmart Canada, where I found a huge selection of high-quality Christmas sweaters and stylish separates at affordable prices. In fact, the hardest part was deciding on which sweater I loved (hated?) most! In the end, I decided that Santa’s little helper was very much my style. This holiday season; expect a ton of “elfies!”
2. Since you’re going ugly, amp up the gorgeousness. To transition the sweater from Christmas day to pre-Christmas fashion, pair the sweater with slim pants and dress boots. I live in these George Women’s Leggings over the colder months, because they are perfect to wear under long sweaters and over-the-knee boots.
And, always ensure your hair and makeup game is on point – you’ll want to wear the sweater as an ironic throwback. If the rest of your look is structured, your fashion statement will be well received!
3. Get the family in on the fun. It’s one thing for me to trot around during the holiday season wearing an ugly Christmas sweater, but if my boys are also decked out, we become the family with eclectic fashion taste!
The boys love to match, and I love to indulge them! But shhhh… I have a secret to share… don’t tell the boys, but I actually found their sweaters in the girl’s department. But don’t let the classification fool you! I think ALL ugly Christmas sweaters are unisex, and if you’re shopping online or in-store for little ones, be sure to check both departments.

I know that a big thing at Christmas is the ugly Christmas sweater but I still don’t get it but I guess it’s because I lived through that fad when they weren’t considered ugly sweaters to anyone unless you were a teenager like me but I’m not going back.
We ordered our sweaters online this Year,we just have a Small Walmart and they don’t have anything for sweaters!
