One of my worst habits is keeping the television on for “background noise.” Not only is it a complete waste of electricity, but it means that both myself and my boys are likely to be tuned into the tube more than necessary. Thankfully, I’ve discovered that the radio is a worthy substitute, and have started to tune into 680 News for the better part of the day. An added bonus: I’ve collected a bunch of random “news” facts that make me appear smarter and more worldly than I really am :)
One such fact is according to the TD Insurance Risky Business Poll, the majority of Canadians say they’re cautious and risk-avoiders (55%), with only 8% saying they are risk-takers.
Some notable theories:
81% think men are riskier when it comes to outdoor activities
72% say men are riskier drivers
56% think men are riskier eaters (duh)
51% also say men are riskier when it comes to travelling
Only in terms of taking care of their health are men and women perceived to be relatively close in risky behavior, with 48% saying men are riskier and 44% citing women as riskier.
Now this study isn’t breaking news – first, it was published back in November and second, can you really deny any of the perceptions listed above?
But what I want to know is – Do you dare? Are you averse to risk – or do you throw caution to the wind? If I triple dog dared you to walk up to a complete stranger and break out in a tap dance, would you?
While I’m definitely in the non-risk taker camp, I think it’s pretty sad that Canadians, as a whole, are about as impulsive as a tree stump. So I’ve got a challenge for you this weekend – it has been suggested that there are five (5) elements of spontaneity:
Adequacy
Creativity
Vitality
Originality
Flexibility
Do something out of your ordinary by channeling one of these elements. Take a risk and embark on a creative culinary adventure. Make the time to look after your heart and mental health. Answer Yes to at least one crazy suggestion put forth by your children (as in, YES, you CAN put chocolate sauce on your pasta). In short, LIVE LIFE! In the words of the poet of the moment, Drake:
“Everybody dies but not everybody lives.”
Have a great weekend y’all! xoxo
