It's One of A Kind

The Real Tooth Fairies… It’s One of A Kind!

November 28, 2010 By Lena

Today I’ll be wrapping up the It’s One of A Kind! giveaways… can’t believe how quickly the month zipped by! I’d like to call this post an “honorable mention”, because while The Real Tooth Fairies is not Canadian-made, it is simply fabulous… and I’m positive that readers with young daughters at “Tooth Fairy” stage will love it!

One of the most special visitors in a young girl’s life (besides Santa and Justin Bieber when he’s on tour) is definitely the Tooth Fairy. I’m sure you remember the thrill of losing a tooth – then carefully placing it under your pillow, anxious to wake up to a magical surprise.

But the story of the tooth fairy has never truly been told. Nobody has known who she is and what she looks like, nor where she lives… until now! The Real Tooth Fairies – a brand new interactive website and storybook series for young girls – is aimed to provide endless hours of entertainment while helping build character and inspiring her to grow and glow with her own gifts and talents!

The book series introduces girls to the Real Tooth Fairies and the magical world of Real Fairyland. Each fairy’s book tells how she showed courage and kindness, proving she has the heart of a Real Tooth Fairy – a heart with wings. These books inspire girls to believe in their dreams and to spread kindness in their world.

Complementing the books, Real Fairyland is a place where love is magic, and every kindness counts. Your child will be matched to her own personal Tooth Fairy as she takes the Royal Quiz; then, she’ll get to meet her Real Tooth Fairy who greets and talks to her. It’s amazing to see!

The website offers many more fabulous resources: girls can go on a Kindness Mission, ask for a Magic Letter delivered by her Tooth Fairy (for everything from a lost tooth to a great day at school), and she can even create her very own Dream Tree – to see where the Tooth Fairy takes her lost teeth!

But perhaps the very best aspect of The Real Tooth Fairies is the notion that Every Kindness Counts –

“Each Real Tooth Fairy offers every Earthie girl a magical invitation to join an extraordinary global kindness effort called Every Kindness Counts. Every Earthie kid can be a hero for kindness, doing Kindness Tickets – acts of kindness – in their daily life. Every Kindness Counts is an organized incentive system to move up 8 Kindness Levels.” (Read More)

There is no cost to visit the website, however, a 1-month VIP membership is $5.89 USD.

Click here to visit The Real Tooth Fairies.

One lucky Listen to Lena! reader will receive a wonderful prize pack from The Real Tooth Fairies, including a complimentary 1-month VIP Upgraded membership, two of the award-winning storybooks – Magical World of The Real Tooth Fairies and Twinkle Becomes a Real Tooth Fairy, a Kindness Starter Kit and a Gift Certificate for 3 FREE Magic Letters – personalized letters from the Real Tooth Fairy for pillow delivery. BébéBoo… It’s One of A Kind!

November 28, 2010 By Lena

If you love beautiful, unique and innovative design-inspired products, why should baby products be any different?

BébéBoo is a fresh, awe-inspiring online shopping experience. For mamas with a serious eye for coolness, they carry a wide selection of organic products, stylish diaper bags, baby carriers, baby silk skincare, the hippest dishware ever, and much more! The site is based in Canada and offers unbeatable customer service – they ship quickly, have a flexible return policy and shopping online is a breeze.

Of course, what I love most about BébéBoo is the fact that you’ll find hip and stylish products for moms (and little babes) with discerning tastes! Just check out these finds:

David Fussenegger – Juwel Giraffe Blanket ($39.95)

We can think of no finer gift to welcome a new baby than a beautiful blanket. Especially one as colourful and soft as these, which are made in Austria by David Fussenegger. A great decorative accent, playful enough to complement any bedroom and child’s imagination! The Juwel Giraffe blanket consists of Öko-Tex certified cotton (95%) and 5% rayon. With decorative finished stitching for added durability as well as beauty, our generously oversized blanket can be used at home or on the go!

o.r.e – Sippy Cup Retro Robot ($13.00)

The latest motif from the popular line known for its cute designs with a touch of mischief is the Retro Robot Collection. The pattern is playfully inspired by an innocent era of Americana when gears, bolts, springs and robots were what little boys thoughts were made of.

il tutto – il tutto – Ava Nappy Bag Black ($249.00)

Ava is a zip top tote with two front pockets and a handy back zip pocket. Made from a durable Nylon twill and trimmed in a calf nappa leather. Il tutto’s sleek designer nappy bags are a favorite among the celebrity-mum set as they are the perfect way to incorporate the daily baby essentials with still looking like a star with a fabulous handbag. Cate Blanchett, Sarah Murdoch, Naomi Watts and Denise Van Outen are devoted il tutto fans.

My very favourite items in stock? They just happen to have the full line of MD Moms products! Hooray!

BébéBoo will also price match any competitor’s price (within Canada) and offers a one-time price adjustment if an item is marked down within fourteen (14) days of the date of purchase. They stand behind every item offered on the site, and are certain that your expectations (regarding quality, selection of items and shopping experience) will be exceeded.

Bonus: Follow their footsteps and sign up for their newsletter: you’ll get a dose of BébéBoo every month! Read about new products, sales, gift ideas and special offers. As a BébéBoo footstep follower you can receive a FREE gift every month with purchases of $150 or more – something you WILL go GA-GA over! This month’s free gift is a Zoli Buzz B Nail Trimmer: “Buzz B is a battery operated nail trimmer. It safely trims nails with a gentle yet effective oscillating action. TUMZEE… It’s One of A Kind!

November 25, 2010 By Lena

Tummy Time. Two words which inspire either gleeful giggles or screams of protest from babies. Why is it that babies are never neutral on the subject? They seem to love it or hate it. Ryder was in the latter camp; putting him on his tummy to play was akin to beating him with a stale breadstick; he wanted nothing to do with it and stared at us with knowing accusation in his eyes. Quite simply, it was torture.

I wish I had come across this fabulous product back then –

“TUMZEE has been designed for babies, from birth to crawling age. The unique design enables babies to be propped up on their stomachs on an incline, which helps reduce the frustration babies incur during this learning experience. Once babies are able to roll over they do not spend any time on their tummies anymore and TUMZEE allows them to spend time on their stomach without rolling over or getting out of it. It also has a “T” support which will keep them from sliding down. Since they are propped up they are able to see the surrounding environment and play with toys developing neck and back muscles as well.”

Check out the features illustrated:

TUMZEE is made of 100% non-toxic EVA foam. It has the softness required for infants to be comfortable laying on it but the stiffness necessary to support their weight. I can’t get over how ingenious this product is! Imagine, keeping babies comfortable and secure as they enjoy time on their tummies. This item should be on EVERY baby registry list – new parents will thank you.

You can also use TUMZEE with all those fancy tummy time mats – just line it up on top of the play area, and let your child go nuts! A bonus; you won’t have to continually reposition your baby as he/she learns to roll and get out of tummy position. TUMZEE was proudly designed in Canada by parents who were equally frustrated by tummy time. To this, we say THANK YOU!!! It’s also PTPA Award Winning – parent evaluators fell in love with it’s ease of use and ability to keep babies on their tummies.

TUMZEEs are available in five (5) bright colours, and are available at select retailers across Canada. (Online shopping coming soon.)

Click here to visit TUMZEE online.

WIN IT!

TUMZEE has generously offered one Listen to Lena! reader the chance to win a TUMZEE in your choice of colour! (Value $60) To enter, simply visit the site and tell us what your favourite feature is of the TUMZEE.

You can also qualify for extra entries! Remember, you must leave a separate comment for each. You can:

Matter Company… It’s One of A Kind!

November 23, 2010 By Lena

Because caring for yourself while looking after our environment matters, I’d like to introduce –

“At Matter Company, we embrace a holistic approach to personal care which recognizes the relationship between our natural environment and our physical and emotional well being.”

Created and nurtured by certified Therapeutic Herbalist Denise Williams, Matter Company has remained at the forefront of natural skin care products. All of the products are formulated following contemporary phytotherapy principles, with the end result being gentle, invigorating (and of course, eco-friendly) bath and beauty products.

“Each formula is slow-cooked for up to 24 hours, to extract the essential properties of the botanical formulation into the product. Our traditional methods of extraction preserve their beneficial properties and all recipes are made in small batches to ensure the highest quality. To complete every formula, we infuse a unique blend of essential oils. This pure fragrance enhances the total experience of using our products by adding the benefits of aromatherapy.”

Matter Company offers three distinct collections: Outdoors, Mom & Baby and Blush.

The Outdoors collection boasts such essential products as SPF 30 Lotion, Hand Creme, Lip Balm, Biodegradable Hand Soap and Bath Salts – all designed to protect naturally against the elements while moisturizing, soothing and preserving your skin’s natural oils.

Perhaps most interesting is the All Heal Salve: Natural protection from the wear and tear of the elements. Soothes, smoothes and revitalizes irritated skin. For cuts and scrapes, cracked heels, even doggie paws.

Of course, since baby Reid is currently balancing on my lap as I type, I’m drawn to the Mom & Baby line – which includes beautifully-packaged products just perfect for a new mom this Christmas, including a Mineral Soak, Nappy Rash Ointment, Baby Creme, Herbal Sitz Bath and more.

And finally, pamper yourself with Matter Company’s Blush line. I’m particularly excited by the Sugar Scrub – with inspired ingredients and the addition of florals, it’s like no one I’ve ever encountered…

An invigorating and restorative scrub packed full of decadent ingredients to restore the skin’s healthy glow. Brown sugar and real sumac berries gently exfoliate, while therapeutic calendula and vitamin E soothe sensitive skin. Also contained in the scrub is anti-oxidant formula  of peony and hibiscus blossoms which helps  to tone and beautify. Only a small handful is needed – rub into fatigues skin for luminous results!

You can visit Denise at the One of A Kind Christmas Show at booth R-38, or shop online. Shipping is free on orders of $200 or more.

Babywrappers… It’s One of A Kind!

November 20, 2010 By Lena

I’ll always have a soft spot for Babywrappers… my very first OOAK purchase shortly after we found out there was a bun in the oven. I recall carefully selecting yellow and green velour towels and grinning at my husband, envisioning bath and bubbles to come. Introducing the ultimate baby bath towel –

From their website:

“Babywrappers are so unique and versatile you will never use another towel again for your baby’s bath. The Babywrapper hangs like an apron around your neck while protecting you from getting a bath yourself! This oversized bath towel was designed to be large enough to completely wrap your baby in it and light enough to comfortably feel your wiggly baby through it. When bath-time is over simply pick her up with your 2 free hands and place her on your chest, wrapping the towel around her. Your baby will enjoy cuddling up against you and will love the feel of the soft absorbent terry cloth towel around her. You’ll be amazed at how easy bath-time can be!”

Babywrappers are the invention of Canadian mom Dina, who found bathtime a challenge in her small bathroom. Inspired to improve her experience, Dina sewed up an apron-like towel that secured around her neck to protect her outfit while baby splashed about. Et voila! With her creativity and focus to bring the product to market, bathtime became easier for moms everywhere!

Because I stocked up on Babywrappers before Ryder arrived, we never had to endure the frustration of drying off a wriggly, slippery baby. But with fellow moms, it was constantly a topic of discussion – how to avoid being splashed, where to put the towel while lifting baby, and most important, how to keep baby warm during transportation from tub to bed/change pad. Babywrappers solve all of these problems!

Click here to see how Babywrappers work.

Babywrappers are available in a large selection of colours and textures, including waffle, gingham, velour, camo and more. They are quite honestly one of the perfect gifts for a mom-to-be – and you can forget all the standard hooded bath towels that are usually on baby registries. They do not work. They will be thrown out. Even after we purchased Babywrappers I received a few hooded towels at my baby shower, and could not believe how they paled in comparison with respect to quality, size, and of course, user friendliness!

The towels took Ryder through to his first year of life, and then he became too big for them. But that’s okay – they’re perfect for Reid to enjoy – and he does now, every time he takes a bath.

I couldn’t resist posting this picture of Ryder at 8 months (a lifetime ago!), all wrapped up and cozy post-bath!

You can visit Babywrappers at the One of A Kind show – just stop by booth X-61. You can also purchase Babywrapers online.

WIN IT!

Babywrappers has generously offered one Listen to Lena! reader the chance to win a Babywrapper, in your choice of colour! To enter, simply visit the website and leave a comment here, telling us which one you would choose if you won.

babibu… It’s One of A Kind!

November 19, 2010 By Lena

Soft, luxurious and the ultimate in comfort. Why would you want anything else next to baby’s delicate skin?

Introducing babibu, an eco-friendly line of bamboo basics. All babibu products are proudly designed and handmade in Canada, using high quality bamboo fabric. If you’ve been looking for an environmentally friendly alternative that is also stylish & fun, I’d say you’ve found the solution.

babibu was created by designer Sarah Lopez shortly after giving birth to her son. After realizing that it was nearly impossible to find baby clothing that was eco-friendly, comfortable and trendy, Sarah began to design her own clothing for her son, with the hopes of embodying all of these qualities. Sarah soon learned that she wasn’t the only mom who yearned for better babywear, and that a union of quality, fashion, and the environment was in high demand! She became so passionate about her plight to improve the world of baby couture that she opened her own company with her talented seamstress mother-in-law, Beatriz. And just like that, babibu was born.

Shopping online is a breeze: all babibu products are available in sizes 0-24 months in the following trendy colours:

Simply grab a style, select from one of the many colours, and go! I LOVE that you can coordinate an entire outfit – everything from onesies and baby blankets to boppys and crib sheets – in complimentary shades of fabulous!

And this is certainly not the first time you’ve heard me share the benefits of bamboo – it’s an über breathable material that quickly wicks moisture away from the body, allowing your baby to stay cool and dry in the summer, and cozy (but never overheated) in the winter. In fact, bamboo swaddling blankets are slowly becoming the gold standard for keeping baby cuddly from birth (and happen to be one of my favourite baby shower items to give). Bamboo is also hypoallergenic, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-static… and at the end of the day, just throw it in the washer/dryer with the rest of your clothes. Could it get easier?

From babibu’s website, my picks:

This long sleeve onesie is not only comfortable, but it’s super stylish! Made from 97% bamboo and 3% spandex it has the perfect amount of stretch to pull gently over your baby’s head and fits like a dream. This unique fabric is super absorbent, and wicks moisture away from the body to keep your baby cool and dry in the summer and warm and cozy in the winter. This long sleeve onesie is available in 8 fabulous colours for babies 0-24 months of age.

(Did you know that bamboo’s luxuriously soft and silky texture is often compared to silk and cashmere?)

What baby wouldn’t want a trendy new bib to match their super cool outfit?! If only babies could talk! Not only are these bibs stylish, but they’re made from bamboo which makes them naturally hypoallergenic and anti-bacterial. Make a fashion statement at the dinner table and choose between 8 fabulous colours!

Moms, let’s be honest. Swaddling our babies is not as easy as we thought it would be and requires a great deal of practice and patience! babibu’s large and stretchy swaddling blanket is made with 97% bamboo and just a touch of spandex to give you that perfect swaddle! Bamboo fabric is luxuriously soft and naturally hypoallergenic – the perfect fit for your baby’s delicate skin.

I suggest that you grab babibu for your babe before it’s spotted on a celebrity’s child – babibu has been invited to sponsor this year’s fabulous Golden Globes Boom Boom Room – a luxury giving suite featuring the hottest baby brands on the market! It’s always important to stay ahead of fashion – even pint-sized haute couture!

Warm Buddy Beary… It’s One of A Kind!

November 12, 2010 By Lena

It’s part two of my Warm Buddy feature… and hands down, this is the coolest (and warmest) bear I’ve ever encountered!

Warm Buddy Beary, a PTPA Award Winner, is the very perfect bedtime companion to help relax and soothe children to sleep.

Wondering what makes him so special? Beary comes with a removable inner heat pack that can be warmed in the microwave or cooled in the freezer – a wonderful advantage for cuddling up on cold winter nights or cooling off feverish children. We’ve taken Beary along on countless road trips in the winter – with his soft, fuzzy belly radiating soothing warmth, he is the perfect travel companion too.

But don’t take my word for it – Ryder loves Beary! He is his preferred bed mate and even makes an appearance at the dinner table from time to time (Beary has a separate booster seat of course). The bear is so soft, cuddly and perfect for snuggling. Just by touch, there is absolutely no way you can tell that there is a heat/cool pack buried in Beary’s tummy; a definite bonus when matched up against curious little fingers (strong velcro fasteners keep the bear closed at the back).

Also impressive is that the stuffed animal looks just like the bears you would find at high-end toy stores. I’m talking FAO Schwartz calibre! It’s impossible not to notice the quality visible in every aspect of the bear – from the fact that it is made in North America with 100% polyester fibres to the fine sewing detail made evident by Beary’s durability. Even the heat/cool pack is filled with natural milled rice – so if some reason it tore open, there’s no need to worry about chemical-laden products spilling all over the place.

In my experience, the pack was heated perfectly after zapping it for 1.5 minutes. It retained most of its heat for about 45 minutes and then cooled off completely in less than one hour (thereby eliminating the fear of a child overheating). When frozen, the bear let off a subtle cooling sensation which made it both possible to cuddle the bear and appreciate the fringe benefits.

Beary is available in 3 sizes (small, large and jumbo) and 3 colours (chocolate, cream and black). Warm Buddy is proud to donate a portion of sales to Bears Matter and their conservation efforts. Bears Matter’s mission is to help conserve all species of wild bear populations, by providing a forum and funding for specific bear conservation issues around the world.

Barbara Kua Calligraphy… It’s One of A Kind!

November 11, 2010 By Lena

This one should really be filed under “Pretty Things“… because it simply does not get prettier than this.

Meet Barbara Kua – a master calligrapher from Toronto, ON. Her flawless inscriptions make memories of my own wedding rush to the forefront of my mind; such is the power of her exquisite and romantic letterings.

From her website:

Calligraphy literally means beautiful writing and stems from ancient roots. In today’s age, computer generated fonts are widely accessible, but something handwritten always has a warmth a computer just can’t compete with. Calligraphy is an exquisite way to add a personal touch to delight your guests.

My friends will tell you that I’m somewhat obsessed with penmanship. When I come across cursive writing that catches my eye, I scrutinize every loop, dot and cross. Then I theorize what makes it so attractive – is it the angle, symmetry or continuity? How much pressure would one have to exert to allow the pen to flow so seamlessly? (Yes, sometimes I have too much time on my hands.) Therefore it’s certainly no surprise that talented calligraphers such as Barbara literally knock me off my feet. LOVES it!

Barbara takes a contemporary approach to the ancient art of calligraphy, offering fresh and modern styles. She offers lettering to tickle every fancy – including the tart and refreshing “Taylor“, the haute couture “Katie“, and my favourite, the whimsical and fun “Penelope.” Her services include, but are not limited to, envelope addressing, menus, invitations, rubber address stamps, poems, quotes and more.

If you’ve got an upcoming event, consider injecting some personality and upping the “wow” factor by including custom calligraphy. Many of my friends (myself included) treat invitations as keepsakes; imagine how surprised your guests will be when they receive a beautifully lettered card – made from scratch, not Windows Vista :)

On a budget? You can still incorporate a personal touch with Barbara’s calligraphy rubber stamps – customized with your choice of calligraphy style and a return address. The stamp is made with 100% natural red rubber which lasts longer, retains ink better and makes for a crisp impression.

And it’s not just for wedding invitations! You can use the stamp for all your correspondence – for Christmas cards, use a festive green or red ink to showcase your holiday spirit, or go the extra mile with sparkly embossed lettering! For birthday invitations, channel your inner Martha Stewart and choose an ink colour which matches the theme of the invite.

Barbara works with clients from all over the world – simply contact her with the details of your event, and she’ll turn your vision into art.

Barbara has generously offered one Listen to Lena! reader the chance to win a wooden handle Rubber Address Stamp – personalized with your return address in your choice of calligraphy (value $39). To enter, simply visit Barbara’s website and tell us which style of lettering is your favourite.

Monster Factory… It’s One of A Kind!

November 10, 2010 By Lena

These monsters need no introduction.

It’s Monster Factory!
The too-cute-to-be-ugly stuffed toys that are short in stature and long on personality!

“The Monster Factory is a character toy brand run by Adam Dunn, Rhya Tamasauskas, and Bliss Man. Together they design and create engaging monster characters who live in a strangely familiar world. Combining their backgrounds in film, art, and fashion, the creators have developed a strong sense of collaboration that affects every aspect of their process from storytelling to product design. Their efforts have produced countless monster characters who, despite their appearances, are just like you and me.“

The monsters come to life in their design studio in Toronto. Entering the Monster Factory is like walking into a child’s fantasy – piles of cuddly creatures line shelves, clump in corners, spill over tables… really, it’s a monster-fest as far as the eye can see.

I’ve been collecting monsters since 2004. I instantly fell in love with their open, friendly look: the monsters rarely resemble anything specific, so what you imagine is what the monster turns out to be. And then, I simply could not get over the very personal descriptions attached to very generic names – inspiring me to purchase monsters based solely on their personality, especially those who bear a strong resemblance to myself!

To date, I’ve got 15 monsters in my brood. Want to learn more about me? Ahem, I’d like to introduce…

Lucy is always late for work and her laugh is inappropriately loud.

Brenda likes to read late into the night and has a surprisingly messy bedroom.

Although it’s difficult to follow exactly what Wilma is talking about she is always entertaining to listen to.

Dirk is a known instigator who is usually able to charm his way out of trouble.

Olive eats cookies in bed and she can’t keep a secret.

Click here to meet all the Monster Factory monsters.

At first I bought one or two for myself; later I became a serious collector, reasoning that one day my children would play with them. I was right – Ryder absolutely loves all his monsters! He collects them all from his monster toy box and talks to each and every one; kissing them, promising to play with them, even apologizing after he hurls one against the wall. Ryder’s been asking when his next monster is coming to live with us… I would say, oh, right around Christmas!

(I also hint to my Monster Factory friends that should they ever design a monster named Ryder… he likes grapes and 80’s music.)

At between $35-$55 a pop, they’re not cheap. But I can assure you that Ryder has bitten, pulled, jumped on and kicked the daylights out of his monsters, and they look as good as new. The quality is impeccable – ALL the Monster Factory plush toys are sewn by hand and reinforced for durability and longevity.

Monster Factory will not be at the OOAK show this year (waa! waa!) but their brand new studio on Richmond St. West in Toronto is shopping-friendly (by appointment). You can also purchase the monsters online or at select retailers across North America.

WIN IT!

Monster Factory has generously offered one Listen to Lena! reader the chance to win a specially selected monster from one of their popular collections! To enter, get to know the monsters, and then leave a comment here telling us which monster is most like you.

Foxy Originals… It’s One of A Kind!

November 8, 2010 By Lena

Readers of my blog will recognize Foxy from a recent feature, and may be thinking – Is it my lucky day? Do I have another chance to win a fabulous Foxy prize? The answer is… YES!
Seriously, who doesn’t love Foxy Originals? They make fiercely fashionable jewelry at an affordable price and have long been a cult favourite for sassy sirens everywhere. I was first introduced to the jewelry by my bestie Victoria, who had discovered them at the One of a Kind Art Show years ago. If you can believe it, this was long before Internet shopping was the norm, so I actually had to wait until the next show to check them out.

Boy, was I ever hooked. If you’ve got flair for fashion, you’ll love their uniquely styled pieces that feature colourful enamel designs, innovative shapes and clean lines. They are also one of the pioneers of the reversible necklace – with complementary artwork and shades, you’ll always get two fresh and funky looks for the price of one.

Who is Foxy?

Designers Jen Kluger and Suzie Orol met while studying at the University of Western Ontario, and quickly discovered their shared passion for bracelets and baubles. They decided to focus their combined talents on a single vision and founded Foxy Originals.

Foxy jewelry is designed and made in Toronto, Canada where it is assembled by a small production team of skilled craftspeople whose true pride and workmanship is evident in the high quality of each Foxy creation. All Foxy jewelry is made from lead free pewter and is hand dipped in 14 karat Gold, Silver or Bronze. Each piece of handmade jewelry is then stamped with the Foxy signature to authenticate the designs.

Now I’m a necklace gal; I love how the bright colours add a splash of vibrancy, and of course, appreciate the intricate workings of the metal pieces. Lately, I’ve been eying their limited edition Shade Necklace:

Leaf an impression with this beauty. Delicate leaves intertwine to create a necklace that makes a statement. You could save this pretty piece for a special occasion, but why not wear it on any day?

Just as important as their trend setting pieces is
Foxy’s commitment to social awareness – they have worked in collaboration with many community organizations to design and create unique jewelry pieces to raise funds for important causes, including the Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario, Bloorview Kids Rehab and the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

Time to reinvent your look? Let Foxy reinvent your jewels!

Send them your well-loved Foxy pieces and they’ll recycle them for you – and give you a coupon code for 15% off your next Foxy purchase. Foxy’s recycle program is a great way to refresh your personal collection of Foxy Originals while reducing waste and helping the environment.

If you’re new to Foxy, become acquainted by checking out their bestsellers. Here you’ll find their most popular styles for work or play.

Shopping online is a breeze or you can find a retailer near you. You can also catch them at the One Of A Kind show this month! I’ve got my eye on this gorgeous Dahlia hair tie – the ultimate stocking stuffer! Visit them at booth S-38.

CitéFuzz… It’s One of A Kind!

November 5, 2010 By Lena

A note to my readers: You’re about to discover arguably the most scrumptious baby hats you’ve ever laid eyes on. Get ready to drool.

CitéFuzz, a Canadian company that creates whimsical, colourful and imaginative hat designs, has quickly become my favourite stop for warm, oh-so-precious pieces that are guaranteed to keep your little one terrifically toasty.

Lori, the talented entrepreneur behind the scenes, was originally inspired by her own needs – her little one simply would not keep her hat on long enough for Lori to take a picture, never mind brave the Canadian elements. Frustrated, she decided to design something that would tie on, keeping both the warmth and style in place. Assuming other parents would have the same problem with their own children, Lori created Mini Monkey flap hats. And I’m really, really happy she did!

The Mini Monkeys are made with 100% cotton yarn. They are positively scrumptious! After all, who doesn’t love seeing babies wearing lil’ monkey ears? (There’s just something about the monkey-ear-to-baby-cheek ratio that makes me smile every time…)

Available in sizes 0-24m, the flaps are the perfect size to protect little ears from wind and cold. ALL the Mini Monkeys hats are fully customizable – they can be made in virtually any colour combination, you just need to ask :) To clean, simply machine wash in cold water and air dry – could it be easier? And, could you find a more perfect gift for all the babies on your list?

For the little ones who have grown past the monkey ear stage (sigh), CitéFuzz also offers their new line of jazz-inspired Bebop Brim hats, a stylish and fashion forward option for your little rock star. And CitéFuzz’s hottest new design for the fall has arrived! You’ll love the new Rastaberry Berets. Inspired by love of old school soul, these hats are guaranteed to impress even the most conservative shoppers. The classic funky hats feature all new trendy colors in 100% cotton and a unique stitch design.

Ready to oooh and aaah?

Drool.

But don’t take my word for it… Take Sarah Jessica Parker’s! CitéFuzz Mini Monkeys were recently spotted on Tabitha and Marion, two of Hollywood’s trendiest tots!

WIN IT!

CitéFuzz has generously offered one Listen to Lena! reader the chance to win a Mini Monkey flap hat in Cherry with an Aqua Trim (pictured left and above on little Tabitha!) You choose 0-6 months or 6-24 month size. It’s the perfect colour for girls or boys!

Domistyle… It’s One of A Kind!

November 3, 2010 By Lena

I’d like to think I’m a domestic goddess of sorts. I am a proficient baker, love trying new and exciting cuisines, decorate my home with careful thought, and have been known to delegate the cleaning chores to my husband with precision and grace. But most important, I have absolute, undeniable proof: a “Gourmet Goddess” Domistyle apron which proudly (and stylishly) declares my worth.

Domistyle began in July 2003, when two stylish twenty-somethings, Jess and Ness, decided to host one of their fab soirées. The childhood friends wanted some cute aprons to don but only found frumpy, no-fun aprons instead. Boo.

That’s when the girls used their combined business and art backgrounds (not to mention trend-setting savvy) to create their line of über-chic aprons. Made to flatter, the fashion forward yet functional aprons are in high demand by fashionistas and foodies alike – the perfect conversation piece for hostesses everywhere!

I originally found the designs at the One of a Kind Art Show and essentially stalked the booth for a couple of years before my husband took matters into his own hands and bought one of the fabulous aprons. My collection now includes two Domistyle aprons and one coordinating pot mitt, making me a hot little dish (even when I’m covered in flour and chocolate).

Why are their aprons so special?

The aprons are carefully designed keeping in mind both classic and current trends in colour and design. Each image is hand drawn original artwork that is silk screened onto a fabulously draped polyester-cotton twill. The aprons are machine wash/dryable and don’t shrink, wrinkle or fade!

And, who can resist the flirty embroidered messages! Are you a “Gourmet Goddess” or would you “Cook for Shoes”? My faves – “Yummy Mummy” and “Caution: Hot Dish”.

Check out these gorgeous designs:

And, if you’ve got a budding little chef on your hands, don’t forget to pick up a super sweet apron from Domistyle’s kids line:

Kids aprons come with an embroidered message – and if you’d like, a customization can be added underneath!

The women’s aprons retail for $36; the kids line aprons are $25 each. Just in time for the holidays, do check out their Gift Sets, which are 25% less expensive than purchasing the individual items. Fab!

JUST FOR YOU!

For a limited time, when you shop online and purchase a women’s apron, you can get a second at 50% off! Simply enter code “HOLIDAY” at time of purchase. What a wonderful present for bridal showers, housewarmings or… Christmas, of course!

Click here to shop at Domistyle.

WIN IT!

Domistyle has graciously offered one Listen to Lena! reader the chance to win a Heartz Women’s Gift Set (value $50)! The set includes a “Will Cook for Shoes” apron tucked into one Pot Mitt and one Pair of Oven Mitts – packaged with a sparkly stribbon and gift tag!

To enter, simply tell us…

Are you a Gourmet Goddess?

Luxe Design… It’s One of A Kind!

November 2, 2010 By Lena

When rooting through my jewelry stash, I’m amazed at what I’ve accumulated over the years. Chunky bracelets, fine diamonds, and heaps of sterling silver necklaces. But I always return to – regardless of the occasion – my personalized pieces; the ones that tell the story of ME.

Luxe Design is all about YOU. The Luxe Design MAKE IT YOUR OWN line of jewelry lets you create your own personalized, meaningful jewelry by adding words, names or personal sayings to a unique selection of customizable charms. You can then select your own ideal length and style of chain, choose from meaningful and symbolic charms, and add color with gemstone beads.

The designers, Joanne Hart and Andrea Mueller, met while students in the Jewellery Art and Design program at Vancouver Community College. Upon graduation, the pair started Luxe Design in August of 1995. The line incorporates the highest quality findings, metals and stones. Each piece is hand stamped and assembled to order in their studio in the heart of Vancouver, BC.

The possibilities are endless. Choose from a vast selection of customizable charms, and you’re already halfway to finding the perfect present for hard-to-shop-for family and friends. There is literally something for everyone; from Zodiac charms to symbols such as music notes, hearts, pets and more. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, you can also shop Luxe Design’s Ready to Wear section, where you’ll find delicious little pairings of charms, gemstones and symbols.

I’m loving Luxe’s new lowercase letters as they’re a statement piece with a little something special – the letters are customizable as well. I think “R”s for Ryder and Reid, with their birth dates, would be absolutely precious! Alas, another item to add to my growing “must have” list :) For newlyweds, new moms, or even new big sisters… what a wonderful present indeed!

The design duo was recently featured in Vancouver’s The Georgia Straight: Jewellery designer—it’s got a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? It sounds so arty, crafty, bohemian, and glamorous all at the same time. “I’m a jewellery designer—what do you do?” Read full article here.

Click here to experience Luxe Design. If you like what you see (you will!) and are planning to attend the OOAK Christmas Show, you can order your personalized jewelry and save on shipping costs by picking up in person (booth T-54). Simply order by November 14th and add code PUOAKSTEN at checkout.

Bamboo Lily… It’s One of A Kind!

November 1, 2010 By Lena

Are you excited? I AM!

Time to kick off Listen to Lena’s month-long series of features on Canadian artists – plus giveaways – with It’s One of A Kind!

Now it’s no secret that I’m a One of A Kind Art Show JUNKIE. I gleefully wait every winter and spring to visit my favourite artisans and indulge in their unique, fashionable and always trend-setting goodies.

One of my most anticipated stops is Bamboo Lily. Created by local design guru Lillian Chiu, she offers up a chic line of Asian-inspired baby and toddler clothing using the ultimate in sustainable living: rayon from bamboo fabric.

Nice to know:
Bamboo Lily is the ultimate in green luxury! Rayon from Bamboo fabric is a renewable resource that has a cashmere-like texture, and is so incredibly soft. Bamboo is the fastest growing plant in the world – making it a sustainable and renewable resource. It is also eco-friendly as it doesn’t need pesticides or fertilizers to grow. It wicks moisture from the skin; keeping baby’s delicate skin cool and dry.

Need to know:
These fashions are beyond adorable. Baby onesies, hoodies, dresses, hats, kung fu pants and more – all with painstaking attention to detail and fun, flirty pictures and sayings such as “Miso Cute“, “I Love House Music“,  “Buddha Belly” and more. Could it get better? Indeed! The quality is SUPERB. The clothing is incredibly soft and smooth. It’s the perfect compliment to baby’s delicate skin, and is strongly recommended for babies with eczema or other skin conditions. The material is just about all-natural with NO chemical treating of any kind.

Need to have:
The new swaddling blankets and the popular baby blankets. Lillian graciously sent Baby Reid the most supple, perfectly posh blanket trimmed with a gorgeous Chinese Brocade border – personalized with his name!

I was immediately impressed with how luxurious it was – the kind of blanket you want to put to your face and softly stroke. Combine that with the fact that it’s lightweight, breathable and just cozy enough, and you’ve got quite conceivably the PERFECT blanket. The personalization option makes it wonderful gift for baby showers, birthdays, or just because. I’ve already decided that this is my new signature gift item – so guess what preggo friends… you’ve got one coming your way! (If ordering online, the blanket arrives beautifully wrapped and ready to give.)

JUST FOR YOU!

Bamboo Lily is offering Listen to Lena! readers FREE embroidery to anyone who purchases a blanket before December 25th (savings of $10). Simply enter code “LENA” in the comments section (the discount will not show up immediately, however Lillian will contact you to honour the discount). Personalize with a baby’s name, the family name, or my favourite – your baby’s nickname!

WIN IT!

Bamboo Lily has generously offered one Listen to Lena! reader the chance to win a personalized baby blanket (value $75)! To enter, simply take a look online and let us know which other Bamboo Lily product(s) tickle your fancy.

Calling All Canadians ~ It’s One of A Kind!

October 4, 2010 By Lena

November is just around the corner, and it just happens to be my favourite month of the year! Why? Please circle the correct response:

a) It’s my husband’s birthday month
b) It marked the end of the first trimester (and morning sickness) with both my little guys
c) The One of A Kind Christmas Show returns!

If you answered c), you’re a fellow shopaholic!

This year, I’m inviting small Canadian businesses to participate in a series of giveaways called “It’s One of A Kind!” During the month of November, I’ll be posting mini-features on Canadian artisans with a giveaway for each one. It’s great exposure for fellow Canucks, and tons of chances to win for my readers! (You don’t necessarily have to be a merchant at the One of A Kind Christmas Show, but vendors will receive priority.)

Why am I doing this?

I spend a lot of time giving ya’ll the heads up on sales, promos and deals from the big guys: popular retail and restaurant chains. But I simply don’t spend enough time tooting the horns of local businesses – and the owners who dedicate a large part of their lives to creating quality, unique, (and often delicious) products.

Home grown businesses not only offer local character and prosperity; they also build strong communities, link neighbors in economic and social relationships, and contribute to local causes.

And the distinctiveness! Small businesses produce products based – not on a national sales plan – but on their own interests and the needs of their local customers, which guarantees a much broader range of product choices. (Kind of like me, I suppose: I blog about the deals which I think will be interesting to my audience, rather than just throw on a multitude of nondescript sales. I’m a local business too!)

A very limited number of spots are available, so if you’re interested in participating, please send me an e-mail and I can forward you all the juicy details. There is NO CHARGE to participate.

Proud to be Canadian!
