March: In Like a Lion…

March 1, 2016 By Lena

NOTE: The following giveaway is open to Canadians only.

Welcome to March! And as I refresh The Weather Network for the umpteenth time to check when the winter storm will arrive, I can only concede that there’s some truth to the ol’ saying.

So today, instead of stressing about the inclement weather (kids have been shipped off to school), the inevitable snow shoveling (it’s a good workout after all) or the incessant storm reporting on the news (not like we live in Canada or anything), I’m going to colour.

Have you tried your hand (pun intended) at the new adult colouring trend? According to the American Art Therapy Association, art therapy is a mental health profession in which the process of making and creating artwork is used to “explore feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behavior and addictions, develop social skills, improve reality orientation, reduce anxiety and increase self-esteem.” (Source)

Okay, so perhaps I’m not there just yet. But I do believe a very basic benefit of colouring is that it allows us to switch off our brains from other thoughts and focus only on the moment, helping to alleviate anxiety and reduce stress, if only temporarily. And for me, even a short-lived break from stress is better than no break at all.

Ready to colour? Indigo, Chapters and Coles is a great first stop, boasting a wide selection of adult colouring books and art supplies. I recently purchased Magic Garden: Fantastic Flowers Coloring Book for Adults because I’m partial to doodling flowers and vines – I have old notebooks from elementary school with floral designs! I’ll be sure to post my finished artwork online once complete. (My husband bets I won’t be able to sit and colour for more than five minutes straight – we’ll see! I’m hoping to prove him wrong.)

One lucky reader will WIN a $100 Chapters Indigo Gift Card – that’s enough money to buy everything you need to get started, plus a few more goodies! Simply fill the form below with your qualifying answers. Good luck!

I have tried, but just in cheap kids books from thrift stores, not designed for adults yet. I would love to try, as I am anxious and the only time my brain shuts off is when I am doing something I need to focus on, like yoga, and hopefully, colouring!

I bought a book for my daughter, but found myself coloring away, to me it’s somewhere to vent out frustrations, and ust mellow out. I use to color when the girls were babies, something to relax by, and not wake them up when they were finally asleep.

I’ve been able to get into colouring with my toddler. I can have fun and be expressive with him. I’m actually surprised how big the adult colouring trend has gone. Recently I did purchase one of these adult colouring books because I think it’s a great avenue for personal expression, creativity and it’s a great stress reliever. Besides, it’s always nice enough to have a hobby.

  63. Ryan B

It was fun to colour with my husband. I often colour with my daughters and it’s nice to colour a more involved picture so I can spend as long on a page as my kids do on their pages.

Yes I have tried the adult colouring books and am somewhat addicted. It is relaxing, creative and you can do as little or as much as you like at one sitting. There are a couple of colouring books I want from Chapters and I’d also like to get their pencil crayons so this $100 gift card would be perfect for that. Thanks so much for the chance to win.
