I buy my handbags from Prada, my sunglasses from Gucci and my shoes from Michael Kors.
And, I buy my fresh meat from Walmart. Wait, what?
Really, I’m not fibbing. Because for me, it’s all about quality – whether it be the stitching on a classic hobo or the tint on tortoiseshell glasses. And, in the case of Walmart, the fresh, affordable, high grade meat options are right up my alley.
Still not convinced? Yeah, it took me a while to come ’round too. You see, once all the Walmart stores in my neighbourhood starting converting to Walmart Supercentres, I happily accepted the addition of fresh grocery items. Heck, given the prices, I welcomed it. (Honey Crisp Apples for just $2.69/ pound? Yes please!) But buying meat? From Walmart? I don’t know… there was just this strange disconnect that prevented me from embracing the fresh meat options. Until, one day, I decided to just try it.
And now, I’m a believer. Because it’s good – really good.
Walmart offers all Canadians quality 100% FRESH meat, found in-store at “Your Fresh Market”. Here, you’ll find Angus beef, farm raised and air chilled poultry, farm raised pork, and Canadian salmon. I am duly impressed with the freshness, the quality, and most importantly, the prices – the perfect combination for every Canadian family.
Recently, I grabbed some Angus ground beef, and tried this recipe from Walmart’s Recipe Centre.
Asian Beef and 7 Grains Lettuce Wrap
15 ml Canola Oil
500 g ground beef
1 onion, finely diced
2 cloves garlic, crushed
5 ml ginger, diced
500 ml UNCLE BEN’S 7 Grains Medley, cooked
150 ml Honey Garlic Sauce
12 Iceberg Lettuce
1 red pepper, thinly sliced
1 carrot, thinly sliced
250 ml bean sprouts
50 ml green onions, thinly sliced
50 ml crushed peanuts
Heat the oil in a large, nonstick skillet set over medium heat. Add the ground beef, onion, garlic and ginger. Cook for 5 minutes or until browned.
Add the honey garlic sauce; simmer for 5 minutes or until reduced. Stir in the UNCLE BEN’S 7 Grains Medley; cook for 2 minutes or until heated through.
Spoon the skillet mixture into the lettuce leaves. Garnish with red pepper, carrot, bean sprouts, peanuts and green onion.
Diagnosis? Delicious. Be sure to check out “Your Fresh Market” at your local Walmart Supercentre.
At first I was skeptical as well… couldn’t pass up the prices and then I was hooked. Been buying my meat there for quite a while now ;)
That is SO awesome to hear Flora!
I am really impressed with the meat at Walmart. Both the quality and the prices are fab!
Couldn’t agree more Cheryl :)
walmart is a great place to shop
It really is!
They’ve come a long way, it’s where we do most of our shopping.
Great to hear that Athena!
I love shopping at walmart its a one stop shop for our family!
Mine too, Caryn!
I do most of my groceries at walmart but I only buy their chicken if Im doing casseroles or soups. baked or bbq they are too rubbery
Interesting – haven’t had that experience, but thanks for the feedback!
We don’t have at Walmart in my area. When I was in Alberta the summer, I picked up some chicken and meat for my son and his family. They enjoyed it.
Great to hear!
We buy all of our groceries at Walmart! We find their products to be much cheaper and of high quality!
Thanks for chiming in Anne! Happy to hear you’re a fan!
I never knew that about their meat. I shop at Walmart all the time for staples. I love getting everything in one store. From now on that will be the norm.
Happy to hear that Branka!
I live far from a Walmart, but shop there whenever I get to town and stock up on the sale items.
It’s a great place to stock up at :)
Walmart is my go to place. 5 minutes away and they price match, which saves me gas.
Yes! One of my fave things – price match!
I never buy food at Walmart.
Oh Carol – I really think you should give it a try!
I’ve always been skeptical about buying meat at Walmart. However, I think I may give it a try now!
I was too – but now I’m converted!
I was definitely skeptical as well. I actually went out of my way to go someplace else for my meat. Silly now that I think about it. The quality & prices are great! And doing all of my shopping at Walmart is a big time saver.
I find they have a nice selection of meat
I was like you and was not too sure about buying meat at Walmart but once I started I have not looked back. Their meat products that I have tried have all been excellent plus you can’t beat the prices.
I was surprised to see this write up Lena. Here in Alberta Walmart Meat is not very popular. The pricing is good but the quality isn’t. Just by looking at it. Too many times I have seen meat past the point fresh on the shelf :( Thus it is hard to trust the rest of the meat is good. Hope: Just lately I bought some ground turkey. I was pleasantly surprised that it was good. I will buy again.
We do our grocery shopping at Walmart too. That recipe sounds delicious.
I agree. I’ve been getting some really great deals on Walmart meat. Usually I shop at Superstore but found that Walmart prices & quality exceeded Superstore. But I too was wary at first.
It’s amazing how much good deals and fresh products Walmart now carries. I am no longer skeptical about their stuff, although I still prefer some foods from other stores due to the quality and freshness.
Your Walmart Supercenters meat department is amazing! Ours is quite small and pitiful really so I rarely shop that section.
Love Walmart meat department and the recipe sounds very tasty!
I still haven’t bought meat from Walmart, although, like you, I do buy produce there. To be honest though, despite the prices, I mostly stick to budget grocery stores to get a good deal.
This looks delicious, Lena! Must try.
I too grab my fresh meats among many other grocery items at Walmart, always have!
We buy our meat from Walmart all the time. The prices are quite low and I really like that I can buy everything in one place. I can pick up towels, dvds, and groceries all under the same roof. I’m all about saving time and money!
I love going to walmart, they pricematch.
i love buying my meat at walmart as i do alot of shopping there and always find good deals
Walmart is one of my favourit place to shop and it’s so affordable! I love the recipe! Thank you!
I have a Walmart in town too. I go there for my staples. I do by my meat there the odd time. My family is grown and I only need a wee bit of food. Wish they had Walmart when my family was young and growing, I would have saved a ton of money.
I was in Walmart recently with hubs and I suggested we start buying meat there for the quality and the prices. He was hesitant but I think I can convince him! ;)
When our local Walmart became a SuperCentre, we started buying our groceries there. They really have some good deals.
I love shopping at Walmart to save dollars but also to get good quality meats/ produce…
I’ve been buying everything but meat at Walmart for the last several years, after reading this great comments, I’m going to try it – thanks!
I wish we had a bigger Walmart with meat and veggies
i wish my wally world looked like that.
Walmart certainly has taken over when it comes our shopping options. Especially because they’ve beat out all the other stores. I remember when we had Zellers, K Mart and Walmart but the others can’t compete. Although it may be cheaper, the quality usually isn’t the greatest.
We don’t have at Walmart in my area that sells fresh meat we just have a small store with mostly dry goods and a few frozen products
Being nice weather here we drove out to the city yesterday and visited Walmart and wow i was so surprised to see the fresh meat and the amazing prices,we stocked up for a month!
I wish Walmart would add the fresh meat and veggies to our store !
