Scruff or Suave? The Battle of the Babes

May 11, 2014 By Lena

Generally speaking, there are two categories of women: those who like men with a little scruff, and those who don’t.

Me – well, let’s just say I’m a switch hitter, because truly, I can go both ways. (Side note: are goatees still popular? It’s been a while since I’ve seen a guy sport one.) I mean, there are advantages to both – scruffy guys tend to look more manly, with a devil-may-care attitude; suave guys show that a little personal grooming goes a long way, and, you don’t have to endure beard-burn during an epic make out session.

Now, it’s a tough job but *someone* had to do it: research the internet for “scruffy celebrity hotties”. Can you guess who made the top of the list? Did you know that “Somerhalder” means the incredibly hot one in Latin? Okay I’m just pulling your leg. Or not. Cause he’s incredibly hot, obvi (fanning myself in a dramatic fashion).

Ian SomerhalderAlas, if I have to make a choice, I do prefer a clean-shaven man. I find it sexy, sophisticated and most of all, a sign of impeccable grooming. And I’m not alone: a study, which was published in the journal Behavioral Ecology, queried women from New Zealand and Canada to determine their preferences on men’s facial hair. Over 200 women were presented with pictures of clean-shaven and bearded men. The results showed that women found the clean-shaven men significantly more attractive.

brad pittOkay, so I’ve hardly made it fair for men by using Brad Pitt as the poster child for a clean-shaven dude. And, if I’m telling the truth, in a Brad Pitt – Ian Somerhalder showdown, I don’t want to be making a judgement on the level of desirability. Still, I have to give ol’ Brad the edge – and extra points for a kissably soft cheek.

My husband? He’s on Team Suave, thanks to the Braun °CoolTec shaver. The Braun °CoolTec is the world’s first dry shaver that’s engineered to deliver the leading shaving performance you expect from Braun whilst creating a noticeable reduction in the signs of shaving irritation including burning, itching, redness, skin tension and warmth.

In fact, they’ve got it down to a science! The Braun °CoolTec features innovative Thermo-Electric-Cooling (TEC) technology. This technology, usually reserved for the construction of space crafts and satellites, transfers heat away from the shaver head and cools down the skin during the shave, leaving an energizing coolness when the shaver glides around the contours of the face. Features and benefits include:

cooltec• °CoolTec’s cutting-edge aluminium cooling bar is integrated into the shaver head and makes contact with the skin during shaving to transport heat away from the skin, actively cooling and calming skin. The result is perfectly relaxed, smooth skin with a feeling of freshness, all at the push of a button and without the need for any additional products like gels or lotions.

• Braun’s advanced SensoBlade delivers the ultimate smooth shave. The specially designed shaving blades target and capture hair growing in different directions, ensuring the perfect closeness that lasts longer.

• °CoolTec’s 3-stage cutting system adapts automatically to facial contours and shaves short and long hairs in every stroke, and features a powerful long hair trimmer for easy to maintain stubble.

• The Automatic Clean & Charge Station cleans Braun °CoolTec easily and efficiently without any fuss. At the simple touch of a button the shaver is hygienically cleaned, charged and lubricated for maximum convenience. Fully charged in an hour, Braun °CoolTec provides up to 45 minutes cordless shaving.

Hmm… I’m thinking “Best Father’s Day Gift EVER!”

Now you could say this review is slightly overdue, but that’s mainly because my husband took a while to get used to the appliance. Like most electric shavers, the user often needs to “get a feel for” the product’s mechanisms and the way it manoeuvres over the face. As such, when my husband first began using the shaver, he found himself frustrated.

“It’s not shaving close enough!” he griped. “I’m not really liking the trimmer,” he complained. See kids? Not every review is picture perfect from start to finish. But then a few weeks went by, he got a feel for the shaver, and now, he is in love with the darned thing.

Braun CooltecBy far, his favourite feature is the aluminium cooling bar, which cools and calms the skin while shaving. He no longer has to endure the heat of an electric shaver, and has definitely noticed a decrease in skin irritation, burning and redness after he shaves. The husband says, two thumbs up!

Father’s Day is around the corner; why not treat dad to the ultimate shaving experience? The Braun °CoolTec shaver is available with and without the Automatic Clean & Charge Station for the suggested retail price range of 149.99 – 199.99, and is available at drug, specialty and mass merchandise stores across Canada.

Some men look ridiculously good in scruff, some don’t so I lean both ways. I love the aluminium cooling bar feature. I think I would definitely buy this!

I go for both scruff and clean shaven, sounds like a great shaver, but my hubby would complain also at the beginning, his favourite words I don’t like electric shavers, anyhow it was a little hard reading this review, I had to keep scrolling up to take another look at mr. hotie putie Somerhalder..dang he’s one hot man!!!

Hahaha sorry you were a little distracted :) I think once men get used to electric razors they never want to go back, so your hubby may come around after all :)

Yeah I find it depends on my mood on what I prefer. Some days I like clean shaven and sometimes I like the scruffy look.

    • Lena

      May 12, 2014 at 1:29 pm

I think it depends on the guy, too :)

      • JaimeeM

        May 13, 2014 at 2:10 pm

I read some article somewhere that said a womans preference depends on her time of the month.

        • Lena

          May 13, 2014 at 4:29 pm

Huh, never thought of that but possibly!!

  7. Flora M

    May 12, 2014 at 3:03 pm

For me, it all depends on how they present themselves to the “world”. If both hair and clothes are clean, then the scruff look is fine by me. When Mr. clean-shaven is too concerned about every little hair and detail being in place and primping and fussing in front of a mirror or a window ever 10 minutes (OK, maybe that’s an exaggeration, but you get the idea), that’s a big no-no to me.
I am glad Braun decided to include a cooling fan – not that I have any experience with shaving, but I have used hair clippers before, and the blades on those things get hot. :)

    • Lena

      May 12, 2014 at 3:38 pm

Yes they do! I’ve used my husband’s old shaver a few times and could never get through one leg because it was too hot! I think the Cooltec system is fabulous!

My man typically has the 5 o’clock shadow minutes after shaving :) I like scruff, but not days later. But at the same time I like clean cut on him too. I am really interested in him giving this a try, I love the idea of a cooling effect!

    • Lena

      May 13, 2014 at 8:09 am

If he gets 5 o’clock shadow by 10 am, then he would love this razor – especially if he needs to shave again before an evening engagement. The Cooltec feels wonderful on the skin!

I am not into scruff – not so much in terms of appearance but rather scratch factor.

    • Lena

      May 14, 2014 at 6:18 am

Yes, the scratch factor is always annoying!

  17. Jen C AKA @JusticeSadie

Purely depends on the guy. I like the look on SOME but the feeling ughhh…I could do without the face burn

    • Lena

      June 1, 2014 at 10:01 am

      Yup, hate face burn!

  18. Melinda L.

    May 15, 2014 at 9:48 am

Hard to say, I like both looks on my BF…but for the sake of my poor face (ouch it can be prickly at times), I am leaning towards suave. Either way, scruff or suave, I love staring at his face (shhhhh!)

    • Lena

      June 1, 2014 at 10:02 am

      Aw, so romantic Melinda!

  19. Christy Martin

    May 18, 2014 at 9:25 am

You are hilarious! Based on your 2 man photos – Brad Pitt – Ian Somerhalder. I am up for the clean shaven man, even though I am so tired of seeing or watching Brad Pitt. As much as I hate it, he is stunning. The other guy, I find creepy but also have never seen him mobile/act. As for the “shaver” I would love to have one and run about on Saturdays and Sundays shaving. Because it is the weekend doesn’t mean the man has to look like crap for me. ;)

  28. Debbie White Beattie

    September 22, 2016 at 4:02 am

I prefer a clean shave because if the guy has a full beard it’s like kissing a brillo pad or worse and if the guy has scruff then it’s like kissing steel wool and you can kiss your skin away.

  29. Susan T.

    August 31, 2017 at 2:26 pm

I like the look of scruff but the feel of clean shaven. I hate beard rash! Lol!
