After yesterday’s disastrous winter storm – which blanketed us with over 15cm of the white stuff – today, we’ve been graced with a clear, sunny day. Normally, I’d be tickled pink… if it wasn’t for the -30°C windchill factor. Ugh! Will this winter never end?
Today I’m looking back to March 25, 1986, when the temperature soared to a balmy 19°C. Oh, the feeling of leaving the house without a jacket! It was all we could ask for after a cold, harsh Canadian winter. Of course, thanks to my mom’s handiwork, I was always set with a brand new Spring dress to welcome the season.
Pigtails, pink bows and puffed sleeves – could I get any more girly? I often chuckle at the realization that I spent about 10 years of my life living in a predominantly pink wardrobe (which was later countered by mostly blue and black outfits in my teens and twenties).
On a related note – does anyone believe the puffed sleeve trend will ever come back?
So besides posing in new Spring fashions, what was I doing in 1986? I was playing with my Jem doll, of course!
“Meet Jem, the rock sensation with flashing LED earrings that light up at the touch of a button. On stage, she’s the hottest female vocalist in town. Off stage, she’s Jerrica, a sleek executive.”
Show of hands: Who had a Jem doll – or remembers Jem and the Holograms?
No Jem doll but do remember my youngest sister watching the show. Synergy, The Misfits, Eric and a catchy theme song (I think that is one similarity of all good shows) are other things that stand out from that time. Also Thundercats!
Wow, impressed with your knowledge of Jem based on observation! And oh, I was addicted to Thundercats too! One word: CHEETARA.
My 8-year old self would have adored your dress…it had everything my heart wanted at the time – flouncy material…so many bows…white and pink ;-)
My best friend had a Jem doll…I remember thinking Jem’s light pink hair was the prettiest thing ever…which may explain why I tried to dress up as Jem for Halloween last year LOL!
LAST year? LOL, love that Ella!
My daughter never had the Jem doll, but used to watch the show on TV….
Your mom made you the most beautiful dresses/outfits !! Try getting my granddaughters into something like that – well maybe once in a blue moon for dress-up or a special occasion, but they just aren’t into “girly” clothes (except the colour pink for one of them – she has a thing for pink).
Thanks Flora! Though I don’t think I had much of a choice; my mom made all my clothing, so I had to wear what she made! My boys are picky now… they routinely turn down the outfits I pick out for them!
No I hope the puff sleeve never comes back, that said you were really cute in the picture.
Yeah, I think that ship has sailed too :) Bye bye puffed sleeves!
I think the puff sleeve WILL come back haha and I actually kind of look forward to seeing how they reinvent it. I totally had Jem and actually dressed up as Jem in my early twenties for Halloween. Ah to be young again.
I can see maybe a reconstructed type of puffed sleeve with leather or something edgy… LOL.
I remember that cartoon! The Star earring is my main memory…My daughter watched the show as a little girl. Now on the topic of puffed sleeves, I rocked them the spring of 1986 too – just on my white grad dress instead. Pink ribbon on my corsage.. we are kindred spirits I think Lena lol!
Hahaha sounds like it! I bet your white grad dress was gorgeous!
I pretty much grew up in puff sleeves and kind of miss them…but that’s the nostalgia in me talking! I really miss and mourn the 80s. If I had a time machine…..
Oh, ME TOO! I would love to be in my 20s in the 80’s. I think it would have been epic!
I remember them I was older but I remember the cartoons. you look adorable your mom probably made that awesome dress
Yes, she did Chandra! Thank you!
cute pic! and yes, i had a jem doll!
Awesome! Too much fun!
OMGosh! You look sooo cute!
Thank you Stephanie!
Awesome picture Lena and you look so cute!
:) Thanks Marissa!
I loved Jem so much! I had several of the dolls. I recently watched it again and it is still a fun show!
