Ah, the primary school birthday party.
In 1983, it meant three things. One, my mom insisted that I wear my most showy, most elaborate pink dress – just in case anyone didn’t realize that I was the girl of the hour, of course. Two, chocolate birthday cake. Glorious chocolate birthday cake! I realize I can never show this photo to Ryder, whose classroom code of conduct states that only fresh cut fruit is allowed on birthdays. (Even I think this is sad.) He’ll take one look at my chocolate-sprinkled cake and wish he lived back in the good ol’ days.
And three – the VERY best thing about having a primary school birthday party? You instantly became the most popular kid for the day. Hooray for buying kids’ friendship with sugary concoctions!
so cute. 1983 I was graduating from High School ugh lol
LOL, I feel the same way when I see people born in 1996!
So cute! I can understand it but it is sad that the schools have so many restrictions anymore about the food that can be brought in. Fresh Fruit for a birthday is just not fun when you are a kid!
No, it’s not fun :( But with the seriousness of food allergies, I do understand. Victoria Beckham eats fruit for her birthday, kids should get cake!
Mmmm…chocolate cake! Curious, most everyone is eyeing the cake and seems like something else has your attention and the teacher is playing her Tomy or Coleco game? If it was today I’d say she’s checking her smartphone. ;) Thinking back now I don’t think we had a primary school birthday party. Still great memories!
Coleco, hahaha! I think I was just too shy to look into the camera :) And no primary school party? Pourquoi?
I love how many of the kids look mesmerized by that cake! It’s lovely that you captured memories like these and can bring them to life now with the printer!
I agree Victoria, I am having so much fun scanning all my old photos!
That cake looks delicious !! In 1983 my daughter was 3 years old – wow how time has flown by !!
I agree that the food restrictions in schools now are extreme – there aren’t many options for variety for kids lunches anymore.
I understand now why my school age grandkids are complaining about school lunches being boring (pretty much the same thing day after day) – I would get sick of it too. I just hope they don’t start adding more foods to the “forbidden” list !
I don’t mind that peanuts and shellfish are on the forbidden list, but it bothers me that candy is too! If I want to send a few gummy bears in Ryder’s lunch, I’d like to be able to!
Haha!! Sugary concoctions are the best part of the party :)
Yup! Best part about having a birthday at any age!
You look so cute Lena and yes, those were the good ol’ days for sure!
Thank you Marissa, I agree!
Oh the clothes we wore when we were young!
LOL yes!! Can’t get over it!
I love looking back. Oh the styles especially the hair!!!
I remember that my teacher’s name was Miss Fraser – she had great hair!
How wonderful your Mom cared so much to make sure you looked perfect and had an amazing cake.
Thank you Lori, she will be so pleased to see your comment :)
Hmmmmm i don’t remember anyone ever having a birthday celebration at school??
I always made my kids cupcakes or rice krispies to share!!
I loved that your mom went to the to the trouble to make the pretty pink dress and cake and then to record the moment for you!!
Your mom rocks Lena!!
No?? I had one every year until grade 3 or 4!! And yes, my mom is awesome!
back in the seventies and eighties were the best! even birthday parties today are not the same. I love going back in time looking through the photo albums, oh the clothes we all looked like miniature hippies lol..everything was fun back then also, the games, the presents and of course the chocolate cake mmmm, and like you said feeling like a queen for the day!!
I often wish I could simply go back to 80’s as an adult. Oh, the fun times I would have!
ah, the good old days .. our children’s school allow cupcakes & cookies for birthdays.. I think it’s sad that some require fresh fruits and/or veggies, birthdays are special, and only 1ce a year!
I agree Darlene! I suppose the school wants to set an example for healthy eating habits, but it’s not like kids don’t have birthday parties at home!!
Awe, such a nice picture!
Thank you Jaime!
Have you seen “Anne of Green Gables: The Musical”? You have p-p-p-puffed sleeves!
Adorable!
Yay, cake!!
:D
Hahaha love that!!! Yes, i had p-p-p-puufed sleeves!
Times have changed since then. Now, there are significant restrictions at my kids’ schools as to what can be brought in from home (peanut/gluten free, etc). My little guys couldn’t even pass out lollipops for Valentine’s Day.
I’m surprised they can’t being foods with gluten! That’s crazy strict!
Your mother is so talented with the sewing
Thank you Chandra :)
this is cute! love the dress – and the cake!
Thanks Nicky!
Primary school birthdays were the BEST!!!! I remember my birthday…it was such a HUGE deal and I was the most popular kid on the planet ever haha! I think I have a photo somewhere….will have to dig it out.
Awesome!! So you totally know where I’m coming from!
Everything was so simple then! What an adorable photo!
Thanks Holly!
Who doesn’t love chocolate cake!?
A very good question! Answer: EVERYBODY!!
Ahhhh so cute! I remember my parents bringing a large pink frosted cake (vanilla or chocolate, not sure) when I was in kindergarten, that was awesome.
Great memories for sure, Melinda! Thanks for sharing!
It’s a very happy memory as I can see everyone smiling!
Yes, classroom parties were always a hit!
Birthday cakes always have to be chocolate!
Totally agree Rick!! Totally :)
That cake looks pretty awesome! Mmmm cake… *wanders off to make cake* :)
Mmmm I may have to do the same!
Our birthdays that we celebrated at school were eagerly awaited by all and with anticipation rising everyday. We were so exhausted by the time we got home from school that we were too grouchy to appreciate the birthday dinner mom had prepared for us
Sounds like a wonderful memory!
Life was so much more simplier back then,my first was celebrating his 2nd bithday is 83 wow where does the time go
