Rage Against the Roses

February 2, 2014 By Lena

I’m not a huge fan of manufactured holidays, but I do make an exception for St. Valentine’s Day. After all, it’s all about L-O-V-E! Romance and reunions, sweethearts and soft music. February 14th is an important reminder to cherish the ones you adore.

However, I am a staunch supporter of the anti-roses movement. I know that long-stemmed, red roses are the ultimate gesture of romance. And you know what? I love to receive them – any day for the year! But on Valentine’s Day…. the one day that they’re marked up by 100% or more… no thank you. I can’t help but think about what $75+ could buy!

Hence, I bring to you Rage Against the Roses: Twelve Valentine’s Day Gifts for Her. This year, drop a few hints early, and ask for a gift that makes an impression all year round.

1. Heart Key Pendant, $250.00 –  Tiffany & Co; 2. Too Faced Sweethearts Perfect Flush Blush, $32.00 – Sephora; 3. I Heart Umbrellas, $29.99 – Modcloth.com; 4. Gift Cards, Assorted Denominations – Victoria’s Secret; 5. Milk Chocolate Love Bar, $8.00 – Chapters Indigo; 6. Set of 2 Love Dishtowels, $12.75 – Crate & Barrel; 7. Clinique Happy Heart Body Cream, $42.00 – The Bay; 8. Boxed Hearts Small Wristlet, $48.00 – Coach; 9. Britto 52-Ounce Heart Design Teapot, $89.99 – Bed Bath and Beyond; 10. Heart Sunglasses, $44.99 – Steve Madden; 11. Simply Sexy Card, $6.95 – Papyrus; 12. Tilsim Logo Heart Stud, $68.00 – Tory Burch.

The only reason I don’t mind receiving flowers on Valentine’s day is because the husband will buy me flowers all year round, so it is not one of the once a year things for him.

Sounds like you have an amazing husband :)

I would much rather receive any of these than roses for VDay as I also hate that mark-up!

    • Lena

      February 9, 2014 at 1:22 pm

A woman after my own heart! I hear you Heidi!

Ok, these are all super cute! Nice job rounding them up :) I love the umbrella, the coach wristlet, and the sunglasses the best. Sunglasses are definitely number one!

    • Lena

      February 9, 2014 at 1:23 pm

      Glad you like them, Nicole!

These are great ideas – I’d much rather receive any of the above gifts than roses which normally fade away within a few days and certainly not with that kind of mark-up. My favourites are the coach wristlet and the heart umbrella.

    • Lena

      February 9, 2014 at 1:23 pm

      You have great taste, Marissa!

Ahhh, that Tiffany’s necklace is very cute.
I like roses on Valentines Day, but mostly I just like the acknowledgement that I’m special to someone. So any little thing is nice.

    • Lena

      February 9, 2014 at 1:24 pm

That’s really what it’s all about Nicoline, you’re right.

You think just the way I do. I would rather receive a lovely meal or something else I could use like that Boxed Hearts Small Wristlet than receive over priced roses.

    • Lena

      February 9, 2014 at 1:24 pm

Hear, hear! I love things that last, and serve as reminders all year round :)

My hubby always buys me a mini rose bush for Valentine’s Day and then I plant it in the garden in the spring – much cheaper and I can enjoy it a lot longer! I also usually get my favourite chocolates and dinner out!

    • Lena

      February 9, 2014 at 1:38 pm

What a wonderful way to make the most of V-Day roses! I love it!

I have never cared for Roses and I try to relieve the stress by doing smaller things. We usually have a quiet dinner + wine at home.

    • Lena

      February 9, 2014 at 1:41 pm

I think a romantic dinner at home sounds wonderful :)

  9. Lynda Cook

    February 3, 2014 at 1:41 pm

I don’t mind roses, but I don’t like the price of them considering how long they actually last, I’m happy with just a card and a kiss from my hubby and a nice meal and quiet time

    • Lena

      February 9, 2014 at 1:41 pm

      I’m with you Lynda!

    Love the Coach wristlet!
But I do prefer roses on V-day – I just tell my husband he better be buying them from the grocery store and not a florist! :D

    • Lena

      February 9, 2014 at 1:41 pm

Hahaha good call and great compromise!

I’m so sad I am allergic to roses :( But that being said I would take one each of #1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 instead please LOL !!

    • Lena

      February 9, 2014 at 1:43 pm

      LOL! Great choices Flora!

I totally agree that is a shame the cost of flowers leading up to and on Valentine’s day. I saw orchids, my favourite flower for $10 a pop, at our Walmart. I went and bought 2 as the price was so good. I than told the hubby that that was what I did and I didn’t want any other flowers.

    • Lena

      February 9, 2014 at 1:44 pm

So happy you grabbed some orchids and treated yourself! And you’re right, that is a great price!

I too refuse to purchase during this large mark up time! Unfortunately, my mother, who loooooves flowers has a birthday right in the same mark up time frame.

    • Lena

      February 9, 2014 at 1:45 pm

Oh no! Well, the good news is that there are a lot of gorgeous flowers available :)

  16. Athena

    February 3, 2014 at 9:44 pm

What great looking items! I love flowers, but it does seem like such a waste of money to spend so much on something that only gives you enjoyment for such a short period of time.

    • Lena

      February 9, 2014 at 1:51 pm

Totally agree. I’d much rather have the umbrella, LOL!

    February 3, 2014 at 9:56 pm

I love your picks! My partner and I rarely ever exchange gifts on this holiday, but we always make a point to have an extra special date night, which I cherish much more (and I hope he does too!).

    • Lena

      February 9, 2014 at 1:51 pm

      Sounds wonderful, Victoria.

I probably going to get flowers tomorrow from my daughter if she remembers its my birthday. other than that I may occasionally buy flowers from the grocery store for 10 bucks or less they are nice and last long.

    • Lena

      February 9, 2014 at 1:53 pm

      Happy Belated Birthday Chandra!

  23. Donnas

    February 4, 2014 at 8:20 pm

We have so much more important things to spend our money on than roses. And the cats would find a way to get on the table and knock them over, probably eat them too.
    That teapot is adorable.

    • Lena

      February 9, 2014 at 1:54 pm

Hahaha cats are anti-Valentine’s Day, I think!

  24. Melinda L.

    February 5, 2014 at 11:40 am

These are so cute and much longer lasting than roses. Although I wouldn’t mind receiving roses on Valentine’s Day.

    • Lena

      February 9, 2014 at 1:54 pm

I think every girl should receive them at least once… and then get the Coach wristlet, LOL!

  25. babefromtheburbs

    February 6, 2014 at 9:51 am

I don’t really like the colour red and I would much rather have tulips or hydrangeas – but bless his heart, my hubbie can’t take the hint! Oh well, it’s the thought that counts :)

    • Lena

      February 9, 2014 at 1:55 pm

Hahaha we should all be so lucky! Sounds like a keeper :)

I love Valentines, love and hearts anytime of year. The umbrella is something I would fancy, living on the West coast I am always in need of an umbrella from fashion accessories to function

Anything but flowers for me,love the umbrella

  35. Debbie White Beattie

    August 26, 2016 at 10:55 pm

I can’t believe all the different kinds of products you’ve found with hearts on them. My favorites are the umbrella, the heart pendant and most of all the Coach wristlet.

  36. kathy downey

    August 22, 2017 at 12:27 pm

I really like the Love Dishtowels they would outlast the roses!

  37. Debbie White Beattie

    September 19, 2017 at 11:40 pm

I don’t believe in Valentine’s Day because it’s just a huge money grab. Cards are expensive and you have to take out a loan in order to buy a dozen roses and meanwhile the next day they’re $15. Nope hate Valentine day but I love the heart products from above.
