Nostalgia: Beauty Edition

August 23, 2013 By Lena

A few weeks ago, I took a trip down memory lane after I discovered a jar of Noxzema at Shoppers Drug Mart. It’s no surprise that I’m not the only Noxzema Girl out there – many readers chimed in with their own memories and fave old school products.

So, since it’s Friday, and I wanted to have a little fun, here’s a tribute to some of my most cherished must-haves from the 90’s. Do you recognize a product or two?

1. Aqua Net Hair Spray – 2. Revlon “Toast of New York” Lipstick – 3. Noxzema Deep Cleansing Cream – 4. Mood Magic Colour Changing Lipstick – 5. V05 Hot Oil Treatment – 6. CoverGirl Oil Control Face Powder – 7. Malibu Musk Fragrance Spray – 8. Exclamation! Perfume – 9. Dippity Do Hair Gel – 10. Sun In Spray – 11. The Body Shop Dewberry Body Wash – 12. Maybelline Great Lash Mascara

Can you add to my list? What were some of your favourite beauty products from the 90’s?

      Awesome! Isn’t it great reminiscing?

When I saw the title the first thing that came to mind: “Exclamation! BETTER be on that list!”.. and oh yes, it was! hah And Sun IN? Ooooh boy. :D

    • Lena

      August 23, 2013 at 10:49 am

Hahaha of course I’d have Exclamation! on my list!!!

  3. Tenille

    August 23, 2013 at 10:58 am

I love them all! Those were both my favorite perfumes for sure (along with Debbie Gibson’s Electric Youth!)

And Sun-In…oh the damage you did to my hair Sun-In….

    • Lena

      August 23, 2013 at 12:50 pm

You know what? I don’t think I ever sampled Electric Youth, though I may have played her tape until it broke my boom box :)

  4. Teena in Toronto

    August 23, 2013 at 11:05 am

    Boy, do they look familiar!

How about Gee … Your Hair Smells Terrific shampoo and Lemon Up shampoo? Or Love’s Baby Soft?

    • Lena

      August 23, 2013 at 12:51 pm

GAH! HOW did I forget Love’s Baby Soft? I adored that scent!

      • Teena in Toronto

        August 26, 2013 at 11:02 am

It was my fav!! Do they still make it, I wonder?

        • Lena

          August 26, 2013 at 11:24 am

I *think* they sell it at Walmart, but you can always tweet them (@LovesBabySoft) to find a retailer near you!

They do still make Love’s Baby Soft :) I bought my 2 year old granddaughter a bottle for Christmas… she’s quite the little Diva! Her momma and 2 aunts got designer perfumes and when she heard her aunt Megan say her perfume was Coach Poppy my granddaughter ran around telling everybody to smell her “Poppy” perfume. It was too cute!

oh my god Exclamation, that’s right up there with Colors perfume from Benetton

    • Lena

      August 23, 2013 at 1:27 pm

Colors!! Totally remember that one too Amy!!

I believe my best friend in the 90’s was Aqua Net! lol I remember all of these products lol

    • Lena

      August 23, 2013 at 1:28 pm

Yup, a ‘do wasn’t a ‘do unless it was frozen solid with Aqua Net!

  7. Flora M

    August 23, 2013 at 1:31 pm

I remember all of these (except the lipstick), but only ever used the Malibu Musk and VO5 Hot Oil from that list. In the 90’s I was an Avon rep, so I used a lot of their products (but “resigned” in the late 90’s when I went on disability – lost all my customer base LOL).

    • Lena

      August 23, 2013 at 2:17 pm

Oh no! Sorry to hear you lost your customer base, but happy you recognize most of the products here!

        August 24, 2013 at 2:41 pm

I knew it was going to happen, the only people I sold to were co-workers – I had a “system” going that only involved breaks and lunchtime, worked out well, never had complaints from the “boss”. The only big drawback seemed to be that I bought way too much stuff for myself ! LOL

        • Lena

          August 25, 2013 at 8:21 am

Ah, that’s always the case, isn’t it? I remember working for a clothing store when I was in my teens, and I spent more than half my paycheck on the clothes!

    August 23, 2013 at 5:21 pm

Toast of New York is a classic – do you remember Cherries in the Snow too? How about “white musk” perfume from the Body Shop?

    • Lena

      August 25, 2013 at 8:22 am

Of course I remember Cherries in the Snow! It was iconic – just like “Love that Red” and “Love that Pink”!

  9. Lisa H

    August 23, 2013 at 5:48 pm

The 90’s?! I was using a few of these in the 80’s Lena! And like Teena – I used Loves Baby Soft. How about White Shoulder perfume, Kissing Potion lip gloss (flavoured with the glass roller bottle), Pert Plus shampoo, Joico I.C.E. Spray, and Dep gel? Hubby greased up with American Crew lol!

    • Lena

      August 25, 2013 at 8:23 am

Haha I don’t doubt it – a lot of these products were popular in the 80’s as well. Definitely remember Pert Plus shampoo, Joico I.C.E. Spray, and Dep Gel… in fact, I can still smell the gel!

  10. jenny

    August 23, 2013 at 6:32 pm

haha the Maybelline Great Lash Mascara was my first mascara! I remember getting it only because I read that a celebrity (don’t remember who!) uses this!

    • Lena

      August 25, 2013 at 8:25 am

It was most likely supermodel Christy Turlington – at least, that’s who made me want to try it!!

  11. NeedNewSpace

    August 23, 2013 at 7:48 pm

    I’m still a Noxzema Girl!

    • Lena

      August 25, 2013 at 8:25 am

Woo hoo! I’ve started using it again too :)

  12. Heidi C.

    August 23, 2013 at 11:13 pm

I can remember spraying layers of Sun-In in my hair. I am not sure if it ever really worked :)!

    • Lena

      August 25, 2013 at 8:25 am

LOL I know! I think it made my dark brown hair slightly orange, but I persisted!

  13. Debbie Bashford

    August 24, 2013 at 11:58 am

sun in, check, Great Lash, check and I was into using Mane and Tail for my hair.

    • Lena

      August 25, 2013 at 8:26 am

Gosh I don’t think I remember Mane and Tail! Off to look it up :)

  14. Victoria Ess

    August 24, 2013 at 12:02 pm

I totally loved V05 Hot Oil Treatment, and Maybelline Great Lash!

    • Lena

      August 25, 2013 at 8:26 am

I had unrealistic expectations that V05 Hot Oil would change my life…

      • Victoria Ess

        August 27, 2013 at 1:45 pm

Yes, I thought weekly or bi-weekly V05 treatment = free pass to use heat styling tools seven days a week! Twice a day even if I wanted to! Frugal tip for you Lena — DIY hot oil treatments with olive oil work just as well, as does laying off the straightener…

  15. Betsy Barnes

    August 24, 2013 at 3:17 pm

I remember all of these! Love the Sun In even though it ruined my hair, lol :)

    • Lena

      August 25, 2013 at 8:28 am

Haha yeah I’ve heard that a lot… spraying copious amounts of hydrogen peroxide in your hair can’t be good for it…

  16. Lisa H

    August 24, 2013 at 3:39 pm

I could never get any brand of mood lipstick to work on me – they all ended up this hideous hot pink colour [before that was popular!] :)

    • Lena

      August 25, 2013 at 8:29 am

Same… I think they ALL turned to a hideous hot pink colour….

  17. Judy C (Cowan)

    August 25, 2013 at 12:32 pm

    I loved the Dewberry Bodywash!

    • Lena

      August 25, 2013 at 3:41 pm

I STILL love it! So happy they still make it :)

  18. sarah stickney

    August 25, 2013 at 1:14 pm

Love it! My sister had exclamation.

    • Lena

      August 25, 2013 at 3:42 pm

I think one out of every two females in the 90’s did :)

  19. Chandra Christine O'Connor

    August 25, 2013 at 7:12 pm

I used so much sun-in my hair looked like a dog peed on it.

    • Lena

      August 26, 2013 at 1:31 am

EWWW!!! LOL thanks for the visual Chandra!

  20. Holly

    August 29, 2013 at 3:23 am

Revlon Toast of New York! I stocked up on that! And I probably used a can of Aqua Net a week! Haha! Love this post!

    • Lena

      August 31, 2013 at 9:21 am

Thanks Holly! And yeah – I remember thinking Toast of New York was the most perfect lipstick ever!

  21. Bonnie

    August 30, 2013 at 9:35 pm

I really miss the V05 hot oil treatments!!

    • Lena

      August 31, 2013 at 9:21 am

I think Moroccan Oil is a worthy substitute :)

  22. Dreena

    September 4, 2013 at 6:38 am

I loved Dewberry from The Body Shop! It’s back? I will run to the store to get it!!
I used to wear Body Shop’s Mango perfume oil.

    • Lena

      February 20, 2014 at 12:01 pm

  24. Elizabeth

    • Lena

      February 20, 2014 at 12:01 pm

OMG TImotei… completely forgot about that one! AWESOME.

  25. Judy C (Cowan)

    October 22, 2013 at 2:34 am

I was cleaning out a box full of “old” stuff yesterday and guess what I found. Yep, a tube of 5. V05 Hot Oil Treatment – thinking it is probably way past its best before date!

    • Lena

      February 20, 2014 at 12:07 pm

      Don’t use it Judy! LOL
