For the last few nights, I’ve had a particularly unwelcome habit of falling asleep for about 30 minutes around 9:00pm – then waking up and being WIDE AWAKE until, say, 1:00am.
NOT COOL.
And so I’ve discovered the exciting world of late night television; talk shows, nightly news, and episode after episode of Property Brothers. You know, those two adorably tall-but-yet-never-seem-awkward brothers who dabble in home improvement and real estate. There’s a certain thrill about watching them take a below-average home (more often than not, one that I wouldn’t set foot in without my tallest wellies) and turning it into a modern castle. How I’ve dreamed of witnessing such a glorious transformation! (On my 5-year old executive semi in the ‘burbs, of course. None of that foreclosure stuff.)
More about the show:
“Property Brothers is a real estate & renovation show featuring twin brothers Drew and Jonathan Scott. Drew’s a real estate agent and Jonathan’s a contractor – together, they find down-and-out fixer-uppers and turn them into perfect homes for their clients. To convince the buyers to believe in their vision, they use CGI technology to help buyers see the potential in two rundown, outdated, ugly homes. Once the homeowners decide which house is right for them, Drew gets to work on negotiating the purchase while Jonathan oversees the renovation. When the dust has settled, and the buyers walk through their front door for the final reveal but the question is, do they have their dream home?” – W Network
Okay, so here’s the deal. Last night while watching the show, I was immediately struck by the fact that even though the brothers are identical, they offer something very different to a woman.
Are you attracted to the “Jonathan” kind of guy – incredibly handy with an eye for design and obviously, great with his hands? This is a man who takes on projects (and life) with gusto, and when confronted with problems, normally has a fabulous solution (that may or may not involve a modern white kitchen).
Or do you look for more of a “Drew” type – a sharp dresser, smooth talker and the ability to negotiate just about anything? He’ll text you, take you to an expensive restaurant on the first date, and his roaring metrosexuality will make you question your own choice of hairdressers.
As much as the serial re-decorator in me sees the value of having a Jonathan prototype around, I must admit that I tend to be attracted to the Drews of the world. After all, a smart, successful businessman can simply hire a contractor, no? It’s like having the best of both worlds! (And, you’ll always have a shopping buddy.)
What about you? Do you love a man who frequents the Home Depot… or Holt Renfrew?
(EDIT – I’m not the only one who wants to know… Look who’s been following this post!)
I might be biased but I will always be Team Realtor Metrosexual every time. :P
Yes, you might be biased… but I am totally on that team too :)
My husband is a Home Depot kind of guy and I don’t mind because you need someone who knows his way around tools. Either way though (tools or clothes) it could get quite expensive.
I wanted to add, I would love to see the inside of their house. I absolutely love their show and cannot decide who I have a bigger crush on.
Me too! Dying to know if their own home is a collection of all the fabulous renos they do!
Absolutely love that show too, Lena. This, amongst other home shows. I’m not even going to tell you my terrible obsession over House Hunters International (oops). And agreed as well! Loving a “Drew” but with some “Jonathan” of course! :)
I think the perfect ratio may be 80% Drew, 20% Jonathan. My husband is a 98%/2% split, and let me tell you, we spend a LOT of money calling professionals to fix his mistakes!!
i love the property bros. great show
and for the record i like my man handy AND with style ;)
Well Jonathan DOES clean up pretty well… I’ve seen him on red carpet appearances :)
Great show! I will have to agree with you Lena. having the best of both worlds is ideal but If I had to choose between the two it would be the Drew’s of the world!
Woot! Another lady who loves her guys metro!
I love these guys!
:) I think collectively, most women do. And it doesn’t hurt that they have brains too!
Oh, I prefer a “home depot” of guy lol I enjoy watching these 2!
Handy men do come in handy Anne! Hahaha
I love this show (and I have a friend in Louisiana that watches it too !). I think my ideal kind of guy is somewhere in between the two extremes – someone that can be handy when needed but can also deal with negotiations but with none of the “phony” crap that seems to come along with it. I guess all things considered, I like more of a “Johnathan” type.
Well said Flora! There is definitely a “phony” aspect that can come with the smooth-talking territory…
I am all over Drew. I love a guy who can negotiate, it makes me feel like he could talk me into anything!
Hahaha why does that sound dirty???
I LOVE this show! But I’d have to say I’m attracted to both. My hubby has that qualities of both :)
Lucky girl! That’s awesome Donna Marie!
Jonathan please! I need a guy who knows how to fix things when they break. And can build me the home of my dreams.
Having a guy who can build you the home of your dreams is a wonderful quality to have, for sure!
Can I have a bit of both? I love a ‘handyman’ that can do the home repairs, fix the vehicle, play rough and manly with the boys but please can he comprehend grooming, cleanliness and not be fashion blind too – not too much to ask for? I married the manly guy and struggle to hep him find his hidden metro bits :-]
I don’t think that’s too much to ask! :)
I watch Property Brothers all the time – with my husband who shouts things out to the Property Bros. like they can HEAR him – and I prefer the handyman to the smooth talker. I like a guy who can get it done on the job…portends well for other areas.
HAHAHAHA I literally LOL’ed at your husband shouting things to the Property Brothers. Too, too funny!
Hee hee, I’d prefer more of the Jonathan – more relaxed and fun, as long as he cleans up and dresses up on occasions too.
Actually Jonathan is pretty hot :)
I love the Home Depot type of guy – exactly where my husband fits in! There isn’t a project that he hasn’t handled inside and outside our home. He’s knocked down walls, built me a new kitchen – twice, made me ceramic tables, but most of all, he rotatills my garden for me and helps plant my veggies.
He sounds like quite the handy man – love that he built you a new kitchen! I need one of those men :)
Oh gosh, the Property Brothers. i have a weird love/hate relationship with this show…I don’t know why! Drew just rubs me the wrong way. Maybe I don’t like smooth talkers haha! Jonathan for me :)
I think there’s a certain type of girl who likes the smooth talker… sounds like you’re a Jonathan type of gal for sure!
Love the show and love them both, I am selfish, I want it all, but as we know that rarely happens so I still have my dreams and them!
Hahaha it would be a dream to have the best of both worlds!
Although my hubby has to act more like a “Drew” as he is a corporate exec, he is definitely a “Jonathan”. The minute he gets home he changes into “Jonathan” clothes and gets to work either outside or in his workshop. I think they know him by name at Canadian Tire and Home depot!
WOOT! Sounds like the best of both worlds, Heidi!
We love this show but my hubby is more of a “Mr. Fixed It” person and very handy with tools around the house and garden so we definitely prefer Jonathan.
“Mr Fix Its” are handy to have around the house for sure, Marissa!
I feel pretty lucky to have a partner who’s a pretty good mix of both! He can build or fix anything, and used to work in construction. Now he’s a health care professional with his own business, and I’ve had the chance to see him clean up pretty good. Although I like seeing him in a sharp suit, I do love seeing him revert to his home depot side ;)
Swoon! Sounds divine Victoria!
Love this show, my vote would be for the Jonathan type, my hubby is definitely more of the Mr Fix-It type!
Good for you Judy – those are great guys to have around!
Definelty a Home Depot guy. I love interior decorating and design, and putting things together. I actually like going to Home Depot to! Lol I would rather work on a project then getting someone to do it for me. I have yet to find this guy who likes this stuff to. Lol
Oh no Shannon! Sounds like you’re every guys dream :)
I’m a Home Depot girl myself, so I’m usually attracted to guys who know their way around a tool belt!
I would think so Jenn! And so awesome that you’re the handy type too!
Definitely need the Jonathan type… with all the money you save from not having to hire contractors you can turn your man into the “Drews” of the world :)
LOL! Love that Sabrina – great call!
I am all for Drew, if I need someone handy I just ask Drew to call on Jonathan! Problem solved! :)
Love it! Great thinking Deanna!
I want to take the scissors to Johnathan’s hair what am I saying I like them both hehe.
Hehe! You may be on to something…
I thiink the HD has it all Not only can he fix and build things, If he has an eye for design in homes and furnature then he can translate that to fashion. You can’t go the other way! Being able to fix things is VERY sexy! Just saying! Oh and the making things ….makes money to afford the HR stuff.
Wow, you’ve thought this through Cathy! Great insight!
I like a man who is good with his hands. HD for me!
Vote counted! Thanks Diane!
While they are both pretty to look at, Jonathan is “All Man” and therefore my vote is definitely for him!! Hot!
Hahaha they’re both pretty hot! Though I believe Drew is spoken for so you may have made the right choice!
Only one of us should be spending big bucks at Holt. You need someone to help you fix things!
Good point! Love that, haha!
ohmygosh Lena this is best blog I’ve read in a while, I so wasn’t expecting it from you!
That being said, I’m all for the Home Depot man.
Er… I’m not sure how to take that? LOL
Another vote for the HD man!
