What Exactly Does Argo Taste Like?

February 19, 2013 By Lena

It tastes like moist devil’s food cake and Cake Batter ice cream, obvi.

With the 85th Annual Academy Awards taking place this Sunday night, film enthusiasts, fashion lovers and celebrity stalkers are in a tizzy! Predictions are being made left and right – who’ll snag an Oscar; which film will take top honours; what the nominees will wear; and which celebrity will commit the most memorable fashion faux pas on the red carpet. It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

Cold Stone Creamery has been busy too – creating ice cream concoctions to honour the films nominated for Best Motion Picture. With ingredients and toppings designed to pay homage to the great movies – why not show your support by including your favourites at your Oscar party this weekend? Or, just grab a cup of Django Unchained and make your own damn party!

And the nominees are…

Amour – The Movie

In the final months of her life, a retired music teacher and her husband of sixty years struggle with the debilitating effects of two strokes on both her health and her quality of life.  As Georges cares for the increasingly unhappy Anne, the pair finds the nature of their life together irrevocably changed.

Amour – The Dessert

The universal language. Try the Strawberry Passion ice cream cake with layers of moist yellow cake, Strawberry ice cream, a graham cracker pie crust and strawberry puree, all wrapped in a creamy strawberry frosting… because nothing heals heartache like ice cream!

Argo – The Movie

When six Americans take refuge in the Canadian embassy in Tehran during the 1979 hostage crisis, U.S. government agent Tony Mendez turns to Hollywood for help.  Working with a producer and a makeup artist, he devises a rescue mission that centers on the creation of a fake film production company scouting locations in Iran.

Argo – The Dessert

A red and white ice cream cake celebrates the Canadian Embassy’s contribution! Cake Batter Confetti is made of layers of moist devil’s food cake and Cake Batter ice cream, wrapped in creamy white frosting and topped off with delicious sprinkles.

Beasts of the Southern Wild – The Movie

In an isolated Louisiana swampland known as the Bathtub, young Hushpuppy and her father are part of a community that lives outside of the structure of modern society.  When rising flood waters threaten the area, the young girl’s resourcefulness and lively imagination are called into play as the region’s residents face the approaching disaster.

Beasts of the Southern Wild – The Dessert

Step out of the world’s harsh realities and take a moment to dream with the Oh So Dreamy ice cream bar: French Vanilla ice cream, surrounded by a chocolaty and almond shell. The perfect crunchy beginning with an oh-so-smooth ending.

Django Unchained – The Movie

German bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz buys a slave named Django and promises him his freedom once he has helped Schultz track down the criminals he is seeking.  But Django has a wife who was sold off years ago, and his partnership with Schultz may offer him a chance to find her.

Django Unchained – The Dessert

If Django and Dr. Schultz are going to remain focused on finding Broomhilda, they’re going to need a snack that will put an extra kick in their step. Tim Hortons’ Double Double Coffee ice cream for a dollop of energy, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups for a pinch of protein and topped off with a sprinkle of dark chocolate shavings.

Les Misérables – The Movie

In early 19th century France, Jean Valjean, a man imprisoned years earlier for stealing a loaf of bread, decides to break his parole following his release and assume a new identity.  Although he succeeds in building a new life for himself, the relentless pursuit of Inspector Javert threatens the security of Valjean and his adopted daughter, Cosette.

Les Misérables – The Dessert

French Vanilla ice cream, strawberries and yellow cake. Our quick, easy and delicious version of a traditional French Crepe.  Moral of the story:  Just don’t try to take it without paying!

Life of Pi – The Movie

Young Pi, the son of zookeepers in Pondicherry, India, finds the world he knows swept away when his family sells the zoo and sets sail for Canada with a few of its remaining animals.  A storm capsizes the ship and only Pi escapes, set adrift in a lifeboat that is also the refuge of an enormous Bengal tiger.

Life of Pi – The Dessert

Chocolate ice cream, OREO cookie pieces and orange Gummi Bears. We like to call this one the ‘Richard Parker.’ (Not very sure about this combination – OREOS and gummi bears? I need convincing.)

Lincoln – The Movie

With the Civil War coming to a close and the freedom granted to the slaves by the Emancipation Proclamation called into question, Abraham Lincoln seeks to pass a thirteenth amendment to the Constitution that will outlaw slavery everywhere in the United States.  Facing opposition from many quarters in Congress, Lincoln uses his vast political powers to gain allies in his fight.

Lincoln – The Dessert

Strawberry ice cream, blueberries and whipped topping – an appropriate red, white and blue creation to honour an American legend.

Silver Linings Playbook – The Movie

Pat Solatano is released into his parents’ care after eight months of treatment for a bipolar disorder.  His recovery seems far from certain, however, when he stops taking his medication and becomes increasingly obsessed with winning back his estranged wife, a plan that leads him to embark on a complicated relationship with a troubled young woman whose husband has died.

Silver Linings Playbook – The Dessert

Mint ice cream, chocolate chips and fudge, the unofficial sweet treat of The Eagles football team. We’d bet that eating a cup of this before the big game will help with their juju!

Zero Dark Thirty – The Movie

In the aftermath of 9/11, as the trail in the hunt for Osama bin Laden seems to grow cold, a determined CIA agent begins a painstaking, decade-long search for the Al Qaeda leader.  For Maya, direct experience of terrorism steels her resolve to find bin Laden and leads her to trust her own instincts regarding the best course of investigation to pursue.

Zero Dark Thirty – The Dessert

It seemed appropriate that we temporarily change the name of our Midnight Delight ice cream cake to Midnight Thirty Delight. Layers of moist devil’s food cake and chocolate ice cream are wrapped in a rich fudge ganache.

So there you have it – the finest films of the year, immortalized in ice cream, cake and, um, gummi bears. Tell me, what’s your prediction for Best Picture? And, do you think Cold Stone Creamery got it right?

Happy Oscars Weekend!

Some interesting ideas! Life of Pi was my fave movie… not sure I want gummy bears in my ice cream though – wouldn’t they just freeze? Ice cream alone is cold enough for these sensitive teeth! I guess they were really going for the black/orange theme – should have had special gummy tigers made :)

I think frozen gummi bears are still kind of chewy – I’ll have to test that theory and let you know :) And Oh! Gummi Tigers would have been sweet!

I saw Life of Pi, after reading the book of course, and think it’s the best movie I have ever seen. I hope it takes all the awards home. :-)

Ah, it is definitely a movie I MUST watch! Sadly, this is the very first year that I’ve watched NONE of the nominees! I feel so sad.

I think Cold Stone creamery’s creativity should receive an Oscar!
I definitely side with the previous comments on my Favourite movie being “Life of Pi”
I definitely think the chocolate with the gummi animals is a great idea…maybe some green shoelace licorice for the kelp and blueberry syrup for the water…that’s be perfect depiction!

Now you’re thinking, Marcy! I love your suggestion for green shoelace licorice – hey Cold Stone, are you paying attention? :)
