I remember the exchange like it was yesterday.
It was Fall 2007, and my husband and I were at the One of a Kind Art Show in Toronto. Being 6 months pregnant at the time, I made it a point to stop at every retailer of children’s goods – if only to collect ideas for future purchases.
(We all know that is a lie – I totally made off with bags of goodies for baby-to-be.)
Upon rounding a corner we arrived at the Mally Bibs booth, and I was instantly attracted to the colourful, fashion-forward bibs. Made of 100% leather, they were advertised as easy to clean and guaranteed not to stain. In fact, here’s why they rock:
(You can also read the Mally Bibs Blog – they’ll give you 101 Reasons why you should purchase their bibs.)
I was sold. Truth be told, they had me at leather bib. Pretty rock star, eh? And then I asked the question: How much? OMG – The look on my husband’s face when he found out they were about $40. I’ll never forget it.
You know how sometimes you’ll tell your husband you just spent $200 on shoes/ groceries/ makeup/ kid’s stuff/ etc and he’ll give you a pained look – almost like he’s about to throw up? Yeah, that.
For I could tell that dear husband wanted to give his beautiful, pregnant wife anything she desired – leather bibs for unborn babies, included. BUT, how to tell her… “Um, NO FREAKING WAY!” I could see that his wallet was shut tight, and nothing short of the Jaws of Life would pry it open. However, I dug my heels in and insisted. Go big or go home, baby. Nothing but the finest for our little peanut.
(I had a slightly skewed approach to money back then. Forgive my obnoxiousness.)
So in the end, I won. And, we went on to use the Mally Bib almost exclusively for the next two years. It cleaned very easily, never lost its shape, and it looks as good today as the day we bought it, almost five years and two boys later. Hence, even though it was a few extra dollars up front, we got more than our share of use from it. Score!
So why am I talking about bibs when I’m way past the baby bib stage? Remember this post from a few weeks ago – Pantone: Colour FULL? Well, while scouring the SHOP.CA website for trendy pieces, it occurred to me that you could find a Mally Bib in EVERY colour from Pantone’s Spring Fashion Report. It’s true! Give props to the designers at Mally; they know how to stay ahead of the trends.
May I present… The Trendiest Bibs on the Block.
Mally Bibs are available at SHOP.CA. Know someone who’s expecting? Time to bling up baby-to-be with Canadian-made, 100% leather. Mommy and baby will thank you :)
$40 does sound a bit ridiculous for a bib, but it would make a nice baby shower present for a close friend who might not make the splurge herself!
I completely agree, Sophia! Great for new baby gifts too, because you can have them personalized!
Wow, leather bibs? Now that’s totally rockstar style! ;)
It totally is! Love the guitar motif too :)
Pricey, but nice for a special gift.
Indeed – and I bet mom-to-be or mom will thank you when she doesn’t have to do loads and loads of bib laundry!
Very pricey, it’s not for families living on a tight budget, but it’s a nice present for someone special on my list.
I agree Margaret…. and for families living on a budget, at least you know it’s the highest quality and can be passed down!
What a cute bib! Not something I would have bought myself, but makes a unique gift.
Completely unique gift, especially when you have it personalized :)
Yah, they’re expensive – but I bet they’d last for ages! I’m thinking hand-me-downs!
You’re thinking along the right track for sure!
Not the biggest fan of leather (we’re a vegetarian household), but these are super cute and that’s awesome that they have lasted 5 years and 2 boys! As stated above, they would make a great baby shower gift!
I want a baaaby!!
Hahaha are your ovaries aching? Mine do every time I see cute baby stuff!
These are adorable! Too expensive for my blood, but adorable nonetheless!
There are SO many of them, Anne… and they’re all adorable!
I wonder what they taste like when a teething toddler tests the leather? :o
Oy… I guess there’s only one way to find out – I’ll have to chomp on them and let you know ;)
lol! Please do! Video reaction for the blog maybe :D
Hahah, so fancy!
Those are super cute!!
Joanna and Rebby – yes they are!
I also bought two of them when my oldest child was an infant. Mally Bibs are the BEST ever because you can just wipe/rinse them and stick to the fridge. Both of my boys used them and then I handed them down to my cousin. They are so much better than the cloth bibs that you keep having to wash in the washing machine over and over again.
What an amazing testimonial – and excellent points made! Thanks Merritt!
We have a couple and love them. They are worth every penny. Great for camping (no extra laundry), great for the diaper bag when out and about, and you can use the pocket side for snacks too. Pop some cheerios in the pocket while you are grocery shopping and baby is happy! I’ve given several as gifts, and everyone who has them loves them!
And they are made in Canada!
They absolutely are made in Canada – you’re so right!! And thanks for the awesome feedback Janice!
That is an awesome bib that would stand the test of time.
Yes it is, Darrah! Amazing quality.
I love the frog one. It’s so cute.
