The Search for the PERFECT Neutral Ends Here

September 26, 2012 By Lena

Some women search for the perfect red lipstick. Others, the perfect liquid foundation.

Me? I’ve been searching for the PERFECT neutral palette for a long, long time. And I’m not talking about just any item – sure, I can find a nice nude lipstick here, and a passable pink blush there – but for years, I’ve been waiting for a complete line of neutral shades that work harmoniously together to take the guesswork out of “understated but fabulous”.

Ladies, I’ve found it… in a place where you’d never think to look!

Are you familiar with Caryl Baker Visage? I remember popping into their salon for a facial circa 2001, but otherwise, they’ve never really been on my radar for makeup or skin care. After all, it’s hard to resist the call of the more glamorous makeup destinations in the mall (MAC! Sephora! Chanel!) but of course, glamour has a price… and it’s often $27.50 for an eye liner. (I know. Never again.)

Turns out, they’ve been quietly building quite the beauty following with their Colour Kits – essential makeup pieces in complementary shades, retailing for almost 50% off had you purchased the items separately.

I received a press drop with with these gorgeous shades from the “Uptown Girl” collection in Midtown Morning. Included: Eye Shadows (Gingerbread Latté, Check Please! and In Transit), Blush (Slept In), Lipstick (Morning After), Lip Gloss (Rodeo Drive) and the Ultimate Eye Liner (Occult).

Remember my new hair colour reveal from two weeks ago? What I didn’t reveal was that I was glowing in Caryl Baker’s Midtown Morning collection. With Occult eye liner on my lower lash line, Slept in blush on my cheeks and a generous coat of Rodeo lip gloss lending moisture and shine to my lips, you can say I was in neutral overdrive.

(Now who says neutral is boring? Not me!)

The earthy pink hues work well to complement darker fall hair trends, and there’s just enough punchy purple in the eyeliner to make eyes appear bigger and brighter. Bonus: the lip gloss is not sticky at all, and layers perfectly over the lipstick for long-wearing colour. I am in LOVE with this colour palette!

But that’s not all! (Said in my best infomercial voice…) ALL of the products above are just $69.50! That’s a savings of $59.00 had you purchased them separately. I love that you can get your whole look coordinated with one set.

And yes, I know that $69.50 is still much more than some gals would drop at once on makeup. So consider adding this to your Christmas wish lists – totally worth it! I can promise you that I’ll be rocking this palette all season, so if you see me, be sure to tell me how “understated but fabulous” I look :)

I’m totally with on passing right by Visage in malls and maybe it’s time for me to change that also… were the MUAs you met friendly and fun?

Hi Victoria! I ventured into a Caryl Baker store for the first time in ages and was pleasantly surprised at how sweet and knowledgeable the MUAs were! A far cry from some of the standoff-ish reps I’m used to dealing with.

I was simply dreading buying new makeup. It always seems as though I run out of everything at the same time! Pricey!! I have heard of Caryl but never thought it would be this reasonable! Thank you for this information…always something to learn on here.

Thanks Teresa – happy you found the post helpful! I am the same way – one day I have everything, and six months later, I’m dropping $100+ to replace everything. Love that the kits allow me to do this at a reasonable price!
