I Saw, I KRAVED, I Purchased.

September 23, 2012 By Lena

Last Thursday, you may have joined us for the very awesome SHOP.CA #KitchenKravings Twitter Party. We spent an hour chatting about all the kitchen gadgets and gizmos that we krave – and gave away some of SHOP.CA’s hottest small appliances!

As for me, I’ve long had my eye on the SodaStream Soda Makers. I love the idea of mixing carbonated water with juice or a squeeze of lemon at home – it allows me to a) control the amount of sugar, b) forgo expensive sparkling waters, and c) give the kiddos a “treat” from time to time – they think anything carbonated is “pop”.

The only thing holding me back? The cost. Having seen SodaStreams for $200+, I questioned if I wanted to spend that much money on a simple carbonating device. Call me cheap (which my husband frequently does), but when club soda is on sale, it’s less expensive to simply stock up with the same outcome, yes?

That is, of course, until I discovered the HUGE selection of SodaStream Makers at SHOP.CA – including this very affordable Jet Starter Kit. Take a looksee:

At just $99.99 plus FREE shipping, I allowed myself to be wooed into the home soda-making craze.

“Simple, modern and easy to use. The Jet turns tap water into sparkling soda and seltzer in seconds with no clean-up. The starter kit contains the Jet soda maker plus 1 BPA-free reusable carbonating bottles with fizz-preserving closures and 1 x 60L CO2 carbonator.” <<– Okay now THAT’s a super good deal. 60L of soda for $99.99 to start, and replacement carbonators are only $30 when you purchase two (or $34.99 sold individually)… which eventually equals $0.50 per litre. Plus, the added convenience of having sparkling water for pennies a glass, with the option to purchase concentrated flavours or simply mix with juice/drink crystals.

(Side note: SodaStream + KoolAid = the yummiest drinks ever.)

But I suppose the reason we MOST love our SodaStream is the savings on the environment – our Jet Starter Kit prevents 120 x 500ml pop bottles from littering the earth’s surface. Win-win!

So you may be wondering… does it really work? You bet it does! With virtually zero set up and carbonated water in less than 10 seconds, you can see why the SodaStream Jet Soda Maker has found a permanent home on top of our counter.

Shopping at SHOP.CA was a breeze and the product arrived as pictured in exactly three days. I’m so delighted to have found this affordable SodaStream! If you’d like to splurge (main differences being design materials and the construction of the unit) you can check out all the SodaStreams here; however, having used the Jet for a few weeks now, I can attest that it certainly performs well and I have no purchase regrets whatsoever.

Today, I enjoyed a spritzer with SodaStream soda, cranberry juice and a twist of lime! HELLO!

What do you think of the SodaStream?

I’ve always thought that Soda Streams were way too expensive so I’m happy to see that there is an affordable option! How much are the syrups?

    • Lena

      September 25, 2012 at 7:41 am

Kendra the syrups are between $4-7, but you can always find some on sale (especially when they’re close to the expiry date). Best Buy often has them on sale – check there!

I’m also curious how much the syrups are Lena? I can’t find them on Shop.ca

    • Lena

Unfortunately Alexandra they’re not currently available on SHOP.CA, but you can find them online at sodastream.ca or at retailers like Best Buy or Home Outfitters. They retail for between $4-7.

I had a contraption like this years ago (free gift with the water softener). At the time it was hard getting the syrups, so we got rid of it. Now that this new one is out I want to get one. Now how do I convince DH to spring for one?

    • Lena

      September 26, 2012 at 7:55 am

Tell DH that it’s actually healthier than bottled pop because you can control the sugar – plus have sparkling water whenever you want! $99 pays for pop in about a year, or less!

I’ve never heard of this! I think it’s a neat appliance but I wouldn’t have much use for it. Nobody in my family is a big fan of pop, and we rarely have it in the house, except for entertaining purposes.

      September 26, 2012 at 7:53 am

Ah, then it probably wouldn’t float your boat, because it’s only real use is to create pop :)

ooooOOooOOhhhh my sister has one of these, I’m jealous!

    • Lena

      September 26, 2012 at 7:51 am

You have to get one. It has changed my life!!! Well, that’s a bit dramatic, but since I love sparkling water, it has greatly enhanced my drinking enjoyment :)

I love the sleek look of it; I would have said my little kitchen simply couldn’t take another gadget on the counters but this looks it might just be able to sneak in! ;) I have to admit, Lena, I’m kind of craving one of these myself now, and I am NOT a soda fan! Lol!

      September 26, 2012 at 10:20 pm

Ah, see I am a soda addict. I’m actually drinking one as I type this! Next to our toaster, the SodaStream sees the most action in our kitchen LOL. It’s nice and sleek – sneak it in!

I’ve seen it in stores but it’s too expensive.

    • Lena

      September 26, 2012 at 10:23 pm

That’s why I LOVE the Jet, Shirley – it’s much less than the $279 versions you see in stores!

I’ve been curious about these machines since I first saw the ads. I thought they were basically just for knock off pop and figured they were pretty pointless, but I never considered that you could carbonate basically any drink with it.

  1. Soda Stream Review says:
    December 22, 2012 at 10:43 pm

[…] I love saving money. I coupon and stock up during sales, it’s part of my shopping routine. In the past 2 months I have discovered bubbly water. I LOVE bubbly water with a bit of flavour in it, but it was killing me to pay $1/litre for the stuff. That just isn’t saving money, especially since tap water is so readily available. So I hoarded my bottled water and would only have a small glass in the evenings to reduce how much I was spending. I figured its little help to kick the pop habit if I replace it with an equally as expensive drink. Plus I’ve heard commercial carbonated water has potassium and other stuff added to it which I just don’t like the thought of. So I approached Soda Stream and asked if I could review one of their units to see for myself  if  it was as great as I had heard. […]
