True Story: When informed about The Body Shop’s newest limited edition make-up range, “Cruelty Free Make-Up” – and their newest spokesperson, Lily Cole… I had to Google “Lily Cole”.
Turns out, Lily Cole is this massively popular supermodel, actor and activist. Note to self: put down In Touch and pick up InStyle. Listed by Vogue Paris as one of the top 30 models of the 2000s… the girl is on fire.
And so it comes as no surprise that she has collaborated with The Body Shop to create Cruelty Free Make-Up – never tested on animals, and with no animal products whatsoever – the shades are perfect for summer days, and right into fall nights. I had a chance to preview some of the hottest products from the new line:
1. Pearl Radiance Primer, $22
“These radiant, light-diffusing pearls give skin a pure radiance. Use them before you use your foundation or just on its own. In just one step, your skin is hydrated and your complexion perfected.” Tried the primer on two separate occasions and witnessed a definite improvement to my skin’s luminosity. A bit pricey at $22, but worth the indulgence.
2. Mini Hi-Shine Lip Treatment, $5
“Available in Go P ink, Go Wild, Go P lay and Go Naked, our super shiny gloss can be applied straight to your lips for super sexy, hi-gloss lips. With a fun and fruity flavour, this wet-look gloss is set to be a hit.” High shine that lasts for hours. Currently in my rotation of favourite lip glosses.
3. Liquid Eyeliner, $15
“Our brightest, most dramatic violet yet! Smudge proof and easy to apply, our fine tipped felt applicator delivers a vision in violet exactly where you want it.” Love the departure from predicable black. The deep violet makes my hazel eyes go POP, and application is smooth and precise. Definitely a shade fit for a rock star… or, er, a supermodel, actor and activist.
4. Lip & Cheek Dome, $10
“A creamy gel in an easy-to-use, innovative dome format can be applied directly onto cheeks or onto lips. Available in Pinch Me Pink and Crazy For Coral.” I received the product in Pink Me Pink – and as you can see from the photo above, it’s one of the purest, sweetest pinks I’ve ever seen. A bit too “candy” for my deep olive skin tone, but no doubt stunning on lighter, cooler complexions.
5. Shimmer Cubes, $22
“Pick one, two or more shades to blend and create your own look. Shimmer Cubes come in a range of iridescent pinks and lilacs. Think Pink, Live Lilac, Go Violet and Tint It Pink. Crease resistant and suitable for contact lens wearers.” High on shimmer but very low on pigment – after repeated attempts at swatching two of the shades, they just appeared (see above photo). Hence, I’d recommend a damp brush or using the shimmer cubes as highlight only; they really don’t pack enough punch for a dramatic look.
Overall the collection is pretty, romantic and über girly. I’m a huge fan of the Pearl Radiance Primer, Hi-Shine Lip Treatments and Liquid Eyeliner – but would pass on the Shimmer Cubes. Hurry! Cruelty Free Make-Up is in stores for a limited time.
