It’s old news that my boys are currently addicted to In The Night Garden. From my “Apparently Shopping Makes Me Cry” post:
“Yes, it’s the seizure-inducing, suicide-pondering, freakishly cultish ‘In the Night Garden’. My boys LOVE the show. Conveniently on at 8:00pm (just before the boy’s bedtime), we’ve been allowing them to cuddle up on our bed to watch the nightly episodes. Often, by the time the credits roll, they’re both sweetly sound asleep.”
Tragically, the “night” garden also airs in the morning.
And that’s exactly how I found myself introduced to the foul-mouthed rantings of a Tombliboo. Earlier today, I was at my breaking point with the boys. After taking turns dragging each other across the floor by the hems of their pants (thanks for polishing the hardwood hun), poking eyes, stealing cars and screaming like banshees, I decided an early lunch was in order. I dumped Reid in his booster seat, ordered Ryder to sit at the kitchen table, and proceeded to heat up my mom’s famous chicken stew.
I also turned on the television, praying my home could be whine-free for the whole 5 minutes it took to get lunch on the table. I was surprised to see that In the Night Garden was on at 11:00am, but since both boys instantly fell into a Ninky Nonk trance, I decided to count my blessings and turn up the volume.
Moments later, as I was about to place Ryder’s lunch in front of him, my arm froze in mid air.
I heard something.
Coming from the television.
It sounded like a Tombliboo.
And it appeared that he had said… “Shut The F*ck Up”.
It couldn’t be.
No way.
Of course not.
So I proceeded to deposit Ryder’s lunch on the table… and then, I heard it again:
“Shut The F*ck Up!”
Wha-wha-whaaaaaaat???? Thankfully, due to the magic of YouTube, I was able to find the episode and attempt to confirm if I had indeed heard a Tombliboo drop the F-Bomb.
YOU be the judge. Listen at 1:53 and 2:01. Or watch the whole thing, if you’re feeling particularly self-loathing.
Wow…I heard it too…unreal. I’m sure they’ll deny that’s what was said, but I could hear it clear as day.
Creepy.
Totally creepy! And thanks for validating my suspicions! Nasty Tombliboos.
Oh my goodness! I’ve seen this episode hundreds of times and not once had I heard “shut the f*ck up” until you mentioned it. It seems even more clear at the 2:01 mark.
~ Nicole, Domesticated Momma
Funny thing? I’m certain I’ve seen this episode too but only today clearly heard those words. So, so strange!
shut the f*ck up – I heard it!!!!
Bahaha! Me too!
I just showed trev too, he agrees.
Though giggling makes my tummy hurt, I needed the laugh.
Thanks friend!!
Aw, happy I could make you giggle. Get better soon!
:o definitely…. it’s like they were reading my mind :p
BAHAHAHA! Comment of the day!
Ha ha love it mine too!
~ @Inrdream ~
yeah what Tami said! lol that is ridoinkulous!!! I should probably feel outraged but I can’t stop laughing my butt off! those naughty tombliboos!!
Naughty naughty Tombliboos!
Oh my……………I heard it. I thought you lost your mind first but `yes` I heard it!!!
Hahaha, I thought I’d lost my mind too! But nope, plain as day!
Thats funny lol it does sound similar. Are you sure he’s not saying “Makka Pakka” though (the brown guys name)? I’m so glad my kids don’t watch that anymore!
Hmmm… I’ll have to give it a listen again.
Okay I did. Nope, he is definitely not saying Makka Pakka!
Oh my… that is hilarious! I will never be able to watch that show again without laughing hysterically.
Ha ha ha, glad I could send some chuckles your way!
I didn’t hear it at the first one, but definitely at the 2:01 mark no doubt about it! Naughty. Naughty.
Naughty indeed!
WHOAH!! I heard it both times!! crrrraaaazzyyy night garden freaks! lol
LOL!!!! Glad we’re on the same track. Filthy little Tombliboos.
You are not going crazy…clear as day!! Hilariously Disturbing!!
“Hilariously Disturbing”… I love your description! That it is!
I never did like this show! It’s creepy and I’m glad my kids don’t watch it any more. But yes I heard it too! And why is it that Upsy Daisy always sounds like she’s having an orgasm?
Ha ha ha! I honestly think Upsy Daisy is getting some from all the garden characters… especially that sleaze Makka Pakka ;)
Iggly Piggly is her BF isn’t he? ;)
Yup, they do a lot of hand holding a kissing… BUT I have a feeling she’s gettin’ some on the side from Makka Pakka – that’s why he’s always cleaning things ;)
OMG! Isn’t that something!
Totally!
I heard it! Hillarious! As bad as it is. I couldn’t stop laughing. It’s almost like they threw it in to see if you’d spot it.
Some people via Facebook and Twitter have been insisting that it’s simply Makka Pakka saying his name. But I’ve listened to it so many times now… and I only hear one thing!
Wow…that’s disturbing. Remember the days when people were rioting over things that were supposedly in Disney movies? Disney denied all allegations and gave some pretty confincing explanations. The only one they couldn’t justify was a photo of a sexy movie star that flashed by quickly in The Rescuers many years ago. That scene was removed in later versions of the movie.
But this…I definitely hear it. Have you googled it at all to see if others have noticed it?
It’s funny you ask about Googling to see if others had noticed, because if you watch the episode on YouTube, the very first comment suggests the same thing!
oh this post is too funny. I don’t have kids yet so I’ve never seen the show, but I do agree it’s terribly irritating from all 5 seconds that I just watched it. And, I also agree with your suspicions — they fully said it. :p
OMG if only I could watch it for 5 seconds! My boys are addicted, I get about 45 minutes worth of the show every day :(
My husband is insisting that he is saying “Makka Pakka” even though it sounds suspiciously like “shut the f*ck up”.
Looks like he’s firmly in the “Makka Pakka” camp. I think there are two people in life – those that hear Makka Pakka and those that hear Shut the F*ck Up!
Lol yes i heard it too…. Not my favorite show…. My kids run around making rude sounds after watching night garden! ~ @Inrdream ~
LOL! Thankfully my boys don’t do that, but i’ll keep an eye on it!
That’s sofa king hilarious! Reading the YouTube comments, there’s a quieter one at 2:05 as well after one of the character says Upsy Daisy.
Sofa king… priceless!
LM(F)AO! I can totally hear that :) I always thought the creators of this were on drugs. Can’t you just see a bunch of them sitting around the computer and giggling while they put that in? ;)
JOKING! Of course. It’s just such a surreally odd show.
Oh totally! They MUST need something to keep the sanity while they write that show, seriously it’s seizure-inducing.
Holy cow, it DOES sound like they’re saying that!!!
I know!!!
Smook likes this one too. Oddly enough, she’d never seen it, until we were at a play-date before Christmas – and our friends are British – and she’s been hooked ever since. I want to stab myself in the eye with a spoon every time the beginning music comes on…and yet, there I sit, wildly entranced by these odd looking and foul mouthed things.
The things we do for our kids!
Ha ha ha, I feel your pain. I always try to tune it out, but sometimes I too get roped into the “garden”.
wow nope heard it clear as day
Oh goody, score one more for the Shut the F*ck Up side.
So, since I didn’t believe a single word that you wrote, I played the video with my kids sitting behind me. My daughter, says, “Hey! Thats In the Night Garden!” and then a second later, at the infamous moment, “MACK-A-PACKA”!!
Apparently, to the innocent, it is “Mack-a-packa”, you potty-mouth you.
Ha! Maybe I have potty ears???
Oh my!! That’s so bad!
Oh my! Who would have known. I just wanted to take the opportunity to say thanks for such a great blog. I was directed here by another Canadian blogger, can’t remember who at this moment, your blog was a must see I was told. I’m glad I took the time.
I recently started couponing and I started my own small blog. Come by and see me some time. http://tracyscouponexperiments.blogspot.com/
Thanks for stopping by Tracy! Will definitely take a peek at your site too – welcome to the world of blogging!
This post made me smile… There is a difference in what you hear and what you want to hear. It’s kinda like albums being played backwards a couple of decades back. To funny. I listened tings back for a couple of times and I think you’re right! Could you be on to something fishy? Do we need to call the media? ;) Just kidding. I enjoyed this post (and all the comments).
// Jan
I’ve been trying SO HARD to hear “Makka Pakka!” but I just can’t. Sigh. Thanks for stopping by!
not as clear when you’re actually watching that part, but I showed the clip to my brother in law & left the room & OMG it was clear as day!
Ha ha ha! I know! It’s so clear!
I totally heard it! OMG so bad!
Sooo bad.
Shut the f%@$ up! He said it! Makes me wonder how bored writers of childrens shows are to include profanity in the program.
They probably needed something to ease the tension of all the “Upsy Daisys!” and stuff.
Good grief!!!!
Ha ha ha, did you hear it Steph?
I definitely heard the f-bomb, Lena! I don’t know how you stand watching that show – kudos to you for your patience! I’m something of a tv nazi, because there’s a rule in my house – if Mama doesn’t like it, it’s not watched! LOL But, seriously, I hate the Wiggles, Barney, 4Square and much more… and my kids know not to even ask for it. I try to check out shows before my kids see them, and if it’s on my “can’t stand” list, I don’t even give them the opportunity to see it. I don’t think mine have ever even seen In the Night Garden! Muwaaaaahhhhhh! ;)
Girl, you just keep on being a TV Nazi. I WISH I had kept their impressionable eyes away from In the Night Garden!
Hmm, I hear it, but it’s certainly not enunciated. It sounds more like twittering nonsense to me. Maybe somebody’s funny joke. Funny because there’s no way a kid would pick out those words from it (otherwise it would not be funny at all), but adults hear it in the intonation.
It’s just us darn adults and our potty ears :)
Um… sorry to be a buzzkill here, but that’s not what they’re saying at all. He’s saying “Makka Pakka”. I’ve watched these for 4 years now and it’s clear that’s what it is. Makka Pakka joins the dance and he always announces himself.
It’s a funny thought though, but sorry- no F bomb here!
LOL, you’re not a buzzkill. I’m quite certain he probably is saying something very innocent; I just think it’s hilarious that over 80% of us hear something completely different!
Ha! Ha! Ha! I needed a good laugh tonight. I wonder if the power of suggestion made me hear that very naughty Tombliboo say such nasty things or if it was in fact said. I can see where you’d hear it though :)
I think for most of us it’s the power of suggestion – but there is an uncanny resemblance to a very naughty word!
Wow – they did not say Makka Pakka..you can hear it very clearly! tsk tsk tombliboos…
Hahaha another one for the naughty team!
Omg that was definitely the F bomb wow that was crazy I can’t believe those foul mouth little tombilboos LOL
LOL! Love your reply!
Wow..I’ve seen this one before (this is my least favourite Treehouse show) and never noticed that. It’s crazy all the inuendos and adult jokes you hear on kids shows..
And now you’ll never hear anything else, I promise!
ok…I think the people who created In The Night Garden had a sick sense of humour. When my DD was little, she too, adored this show. The first time we SWORE we heard them say “Motha f**ka”……when we started listening more closely, we noticed it was Macka Packa….but when said quickly…sure sounds the same to me!!!!!!!
Hahaha that WOULD sound that way, I’m sure!
lol love it!!
I kinda felt like saying that to them lol what an annoying show, reminds me of tella tubbies as soon as that came I I switched it so fast so my youngest couldnt see it was on it was so annoying.
ROFL ! Too funny – these British kid (baby) shows are SO annoying to the adults but seem to entertain the little ones for hours ! I would lump this show in with Teletubbies on the annoying scale ! Where on EARTH do they dream up the names for these characters LOL !
I heard it too, but I think it might be makka pakka just saying his name.
Whoa! I heard it too! how weird!
I think it was makapaka
I heard it clearly both times – wow…
I don’t curse at all and while I have gotten more complacent with what my pre teen watches/listens to I wouldn’t be impressed with a toddler being exposed to it.
I’m amazed how parenting with regards to bad language has changed over the 2 decades I’ve experienced it.
