Geek Chic!

October 30, 2010 By Lena

I hate wearing glasses. They slide down to the tip of my nose, fog up in cold weather and are continually knocked off my night table as I grasp around for them. A few years ago I scheduled an appointment for laser eye surgery; alas, turns out I’m spineless as well as blind. I just couldn’t live with the <1% possibility of serious side effects  – some will agree, some will disagree – hey, it’s your sight. As for me… I’m doomed to live a be-speckled life. (Thank goodness for contact lenses.)

But recently, there has been a light at the end of the tunnel… celebrities are turning on their Geek Chic and turning up everywhere in oversized, heavy framed glasses. I LOVE IT! Such a fresh pairing – flirty and functional, it conjures images of the sexy school librarian or an über-nerd whose look screams “make me over!’ (Having a She’s All That flashback.)

I decided it was time for new glasses and therefore a wonderful opportunity to go geek. I drew inspiration from some of my favourite celebs…

… and settled on a modern black Burberry frame with clean lines and just the right balance between beauty and blogger. Here I am – Geek Chic!

Do you wear glasses? What shape/style of frames do you love?

@trishsmth – thanks love! I'm not convinced I'm pulling it off either, but I've received a lot of compliments, so I'm sure they look alright!

Your glasses look great!! I don't wear glasses (yet) but everyone in my family does. So someday, I'll be seeking out a stylish (but pink) pair of frames. And I love "She's All That" and was just thinking of it the other day!

Actually, believe it or not e.l.f.'s eyebrow kit is to die for! Perfect amount of pigment to fill in brows and the angled brush is amazing :)

I just looked at the picture again and the glasses actually look a bit smaller in person – I think the slight angle made them look a little bigger (read: geekier) in the photo. Still love them!

Looking great! I don't think I can pull this look off, but I admire those who can rock it! I pretty much live in my contacts, although I always get a bit of a slap on the wrist for that when I visit my optometrist.

Love the new specs! I WISH I could pull them off and look good. I try to avoid wearing my glasses if at all possible, much to the chagrin of my optometrist… LOL

Beautiful!!And probably a good call on laser eye surgery. My hubby got it, and they didn't freeze his eye enough so he felt them slice it open…EEEEEEEEEK!!!!! (They put extra freezing in the other eye to make up for it. – Too little, too late!

@Amanda – I used to live in contacts too, but now the two little guys, I'm never sure when I'll dose off to sleep, so glasses are just easier than peeling plastic off my eyeballs, ha ha!@Lareina – I used to be like you… until I started bumping into walls.@Soulla – EEEEKK!!! Laser eye fail!

I think you were spot on on your choice. I still feel awkward in mine, I think I just look geek sans chic, lol. I wear rectangular plastic frames, brown all over with blue and purple accents on the sides. However, my hubby says they make me look like that substitute teacher and he gives me that look every time I wear them…so that's all that really matters to me :D

Gorgeous Lena! I've been wearing glasses since age 6 (my poor boys are DOOMED!). I wore contacts throughout my teens and most of my twenties, but I just can't deal with them anymore, especially working in a dry office. I wish I could find a pair that look that perfect on me! They really do look amazing!

@Kamelia – ha ha ha! Love it!@Shauna – I hear ya. I wore contacts all through high school too, but to tell the truth, I just can't be bothered now. I'm sure your glasses look gorgeous on you!

I just got new glases a while ago. Went for a currently stylish heavy plastic look too. Mine are a dark burgundy-purple colour. Now I don't mind not wearing contacts all the time.

@Kailin – ooo, I bet you look equally HOT in the D&G's!!!@~she~ – anyone can pull it off! It's all about geek chic!@Sarah – LOVE purple frames. I went in the optical thinking I would go purple, but the black frames were calling my name instead….

This post may have been from 7 years ago but I just got my first pair of prescription glasses and I picked frames very similar to these.
